ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A local family is mourning the loss of a teenage girl killed in a weekend hit-and-run crash in the North County.Kirsten Tomlinson died in the early morning hours of June 6 after authorities said she was struck by a vehicle in an unincorporated part of Escondido.The 17-year-old was several feet from her home on Mesa Rock Road when the incident occurred. The teen was with her siblings and some friends, and as the group prepared to head inside for the night, Tomlinson was hit by a car as she crossed the street.RELATED: 17-year-old killed in unincorporated Escondido hit-and-runThe driver never stopped, according to witnesses and the California Highway Patrol.The teen’s father, William Tomlinson, said he attempted CPR, but it was too late.“It’s a parent’s worst nightmare. I’m never going to have her back now because somebody was irresponsible,” he said.CHP officials released a description of the possible suspect car, and after seeing it on news reports, someone called with a tip that led to the arrest of 29-year-old Paul Anthony Lissona.Tomlinson’s parents are thankful for whoever called in the tip.“I need to thank her and if for some reason, understandably so, she doesn't want to be, we need her to know how grateful we are,” Tomlinson’s mother, Erica Connery, said.RELATED: CHP makes arrest in fatal hit-and-run of teen in unincorporated EscondidoTomlinson was finishing school at Escondido High School and hoped to one day be a marine biologist or veterinarian.Her family also said she wanted to be a model, and her parents said she was always taking pictures.“She was a ball of life. If it wasn't perfect, it was it was re-done 100 times and it doesn't matter if it took five minutes or if it took five hours.”Now, her family is looking for comfort in all of the pictures she left behind.“She took so many pictures and I am so grateful that she did because we have thousands of pictures,” said Connery.Lissona faces felony hit-and-run charges, and a CHP spokesperson said other charges are being considered. 2189

Erie County Legislator Lynne Dixon announced a proposed expansion of 'Social Host Law' to include opioids. The original law was passed in 2014 to curb underage drinking. According to law, it "will serve to deter the consumption of alcoholic beverages by minor by holding those persons who are 21 years old or more responsible when they knowingly allow the consumption of alcoholic beverages by minors at their residences or on their privately owned property."The Erie County Sheriff's Office have been called to 81 instances of youth activity underage drinking since Jan. 1, 2017. The goal of the new expansion of the law is to hold parents and adults accountable for the actions of minors in their home or on their property for the use of underage drinking, illegal use of opioid and substances.Any person who violates the law will be fined. (KGTV) — One person is dead after being hit by a vehicle in Encinitas late Saturday.San Diego Sheriff's Department reported just after 8 p.m. the person was struck in the 2500 block of S. Coast Highway 101. The driver involved remained at the scene and deputies do not suspect alcohol or drugs to be a factor.A Sig Alert for S. Coast Highway 101 was issued as deputies investigated. FALLBROOK, Calif. (KGTV) - A grateful family is speaking out after a Camp Pendleton Marine helped save their trapped baby as flames engulfed their car.Two Mondays ago, Tony Hurley, his wife and 1-year-old daughter were in their car on East Mission Road, on their way to a relative's home, around 5 p.m. Hurley says a gas can fell off a truck in front of him. Fire officials say it became wedged under the engine, leading to sparks as it dragged on the road."Almost like a firework going off ... As we pulled over, the car is already on fire. Flames were surrounding the perimeter of car," said Hurley.A frantic Hurley, along with his wife, got out and went to the back seat to get their daughter, but he says the latching mechanism for the car seat base was stuck."That's when I look up, and I'm face to face with a Marine on the other side of the car," said Hurley.That Marine was Gunnery Sergeant Kyle Wetter, who just happened to be driving by."At that point is when I used my pocketknife to cut the car seat belt that was holding the baby's seat int the car, so the dad could get the car seat out," said Wetter in a video interview released by the Marine Corps.As the family scrambled to safety, Wetter grabbed their belongings out of the car before also getting to safety. About a minute later, three different explosions rocked the car. After a few more minutes, flames had consumed the car."I don’t even want to imagine what could have happened if he hadn’t been on scene," said Hurley.Hurley says the Marine's efforts ended with the best Christmas gift ever: his family was alive and well."He's definitely a hero in my book, and I'm more than grateful," said Hurley."It's what I expect any person to do in that moment, is to help someone in need. I don't think I'm special by no means. (KGTV) -- The San Diego Children's Discovery Museum in Escondido has been quiet since mid-March, when they had to close their doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic."It's been hard, and in the beginning, it was very eerie," said museum Executive Director Wendy Taylor.Normally, the museum plays host to a few hundred visitors every day, and on a busy day, that number may reach as high as 500 guests.However, for the last four months, the museum has been nothing more than the sound of silence. In fact, over the last month, when other museums were allowed to reopen their doors, the Children's Discovery Museum did not."We don't really fall into the traditional museum category in terms of the reopening. Kids’ museums are specifically called out in the state guidelines as not being a traditional museum. So, in the guidelines for museums, it specifically calls out that interactive areas should remain closed,” Taylor said.Taylor told ABC 10News she's very proud of the way the museum has adjusted during these uncertain times. They've had to become more creative in all their activities, from camps to storytelling, and everything has gone online."Families really needed some support. They needed something regular and normal, that their kids could see and engage in,” said Taylor.Storytime has been very popular with the children, as the museum receives viewers from all over the world. The numbers have been so impressive, as they reach thousands of views per story."Typically, every story time reaches thousands of people during the course of the 24 hours that it is up,” Taylor said.The museum also had a virtual art contest where a winner was announced on Facebook Live.
