SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego K9 police officer rescued toddlers after their father drove off Sunset Cliffs Saturday morning.He said he heard the first call go out of a suicidal man with twin two-year-old girls driving with the intention of careening off the Coronado Bridge.Law enforcement tracked his phone to Sunset Cliffs where a SDPD lieutenant watched him drive off the cliff at a high rate of speed.SDPD K9 Officer Jonathan Wiese said the man had his daughters in his lap during the crash and the truck landed upside down on top of a rock, which would have killed the girls had they been in the back seat.Wiese said his goal once he saw the truck was to get down to the family and get them all to safety."I could see him and he had one of the girls in his arms, and I have a two-year-old daughter at home so I imagined, what if that was my wife and kid down there? You're not going to stand there on the cliff and watch it happen," he said.Wiese said his heart was pounding as he thought of a way to get down the cliff-side. Then he remembered he had a 100 ft leash for SWAT missions.He grabbed it, took off his gun belt and looped it around his waist, "and by then four or five other cops had shown up so I pretty much threw the end of the leash to them and then I said hang on and I just jumped off."He said with teamwork, they lowered him down to the rocks below, where he slid his way into the water and swam, fully clothed to the father. By that time, he had both toddlers in his arms.Wiese's next goal was to get them out of the water. He said the truck acted as a break from the surf while he gathered his thoughts, and a memory hit from his time in the Marine Corps. "They taught you how to do water safety rescues and I had a little flashback of okay grab him under the armpit and push him so I swam and held them above water," bringing them to shore.He noticed one of the girls was alert while the other was limp. He said he did some 'rescue breathing' while officers above got him a backpack with supplies.They used the backpack and leash to hoist both girls up to a waiting ambulance.Wiese said while he sat with the father, waiting for a helicopter to come hoist him up, the man said "he was going to die and the girls were coming with him."SDPD Police Chief David Nisleit said he believed Wiese saved the girls' life, and was proud of Wiese's heroic actions."That's probably the most heroic thing I've seen in my 32 years," he said.He reminded us Wiese is the Officer of the Year, honored for a long list of heroic acts, including helping arrest the suspected Chabad of Poway shooter.This all happening as police fall under the nation's microscope."I didn't do the job to be liked every day, I didn't do it to become rich, I did it because I want to be out there making a difference and helping people, as cliche as that might sound, but I was just glad I could be there," Wiese said referring to protecting those toddlers.During the rescue he said he was focused, but it does take an emotional toll, "you just do what you have to do, but after everyone was safe, it hits you and you just want to go home and hug your kids that's for sure."Nisleit said the girls were in the ICU, but are expected to make a full recovery. 3251

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A new scam appears to target local Amazon customers worried about being victims of package theft.Neighbors at the Escala community in Mission Valley say package thefts have been an ongoing problem for the last few years.Could the trend be providing fuel for a scam? A recent encounter at the housing complex could point to a new method by scammers.Adriana Alberdi, who has lived at the complex for a decade, said she and other residents received an email from the property management company describing a recent visitor.According to the email, the man — described as blond and in his early 20s — was wearing a lanyard connected to a tablet. He had business cards and claimed to work at Amazon. At one point, the man went to the on-site office pushing to install an Amazon Key device in homes. The new service allows Amazon to gain access to a home or car to deliver packages and keep them from getting stolen.The email says the man was "pushy" and "argumentative," before finally leaving. Amazon confirmed the man was not an employee."It's like you're getting robbed of your security. You don't know who to trust anymore," said Alberdi. "This is new. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A new political attack ad accuses mayoral candidate Barbara Bry of repeatedly falling asleep at public meetings. The ad is from a committee that supports State Assemblyman Todd Gloria. It says San Diego needs a mayor on alert given the coronavirus outbreak, the threat of wildfires, and the homeless crisis. It then cuts to shots of Bry appearing to doze off at two City Council Committee meetings within the last year. The committee, called Neighbors for Housing Solutions Supporting Todd Gloria for San Diego Mayor 2020, is backed by more than a dozen organizations, including the Municipal Employees Association and the Regional Chamber of Commerce. Attorney Gil Cabrera, its principal, is responsible for the ad."If it was a random falling asleep during a 10-hour council meeting, I'm not going to get into that, there's an amusement factor to it but I'm not going to get into it. It's the pattern of it," Cabrera said.Cabrera said Bry regularly dozes off at public meetings, but also said employees who see it fear retaliation for speaking out. Still, the ad raises questions about accuracy. It shows an image of Bry appearing to sleep at a committee meeting on the city's Get it Done app, while the narrator says she fell asleep during a meeting on police reform. "If this ad is talking about a meeting on police reform but showing a picture of Barbara Bry in a very different hearing, one, that plays a bit fast and loose with the truth and two, it makes problems with the ad the story rather than the Barbara Bry falling asleep on the job, which is what the backers of this ad wanted you to think about," said Thad Kousser, political scientists at UC San Diego. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A rare sight in Belmont Park - giant stuffed animals riding a historic roller coaster. According to the amusement park, the stuffed animals are being used the test the Giant Dipper. A spokesperson with the park says people passing through enjoyed catching a glimpse of the tests.The dipper has to be tested daily, but amid the coronavirus, the park had to get creative and decided to load the train up with massive stuffed animals. The tests come ahead of the coasters 95th birthday this July 4. The Giant Dipper was built by the Prior and Church Company in 1925 amid the Golden Age of wooden roller coasters, the park says. In 1976, the entire park closed due to financial difficulties. After the park closed, a group of San Diegans formed a Save the Coaster Committee and obtained a state historic preservation grant to help start the restoration, the park says. Later, in 1990, the San Diego Coaster Company was formed, signing a lease with the City of San Diego to restore the coaster. At last, it was restored at a cost of million, according to the park.
