BEIJING, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin on Monday called for religious believers' role in promoting the country's economic development and social stability.Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), made the remarks when meeting with heads of national religious groups.He urged religious groups in the country to pool the wisdom and strength of believers to explore ways of helping promote economic and social development.He also asked them to help consolidate harmonious religious relations and help religious people build up national consciousness, civic consciousness and legal consciousness to ensure social harmony and stability.During the meeting, Jia, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee,bid greetings to religious believers for the upcoming Lunar New Year, which falls on Feb. 14 this year.He said 2009 was an important year for the country's religious work as the Party's basic policies on religious work were well implemented and people's religious freedom was fully ensured.He said 2010 was a key year to cope with the financial crisis and it was also of great significance for the country's harmony and stability in the religious circle.

BEIJING, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- The China Banking Regulatory Commission (CBRC), the banking regulator, said Friday it would introduce four measures to facilitate the development of rural financial institutions.The CBRC would improve supervision of rural financial institutions, strengthen risk management, encourage their adopting effective corporate governance model, and evaluate the quality of their services, said Zang Jingfan, the supervision department director of the CBRC.China approved a total of 172 new-type rural financial institutions, including 148 rural banks, 8 lending firms and 16 rural mutual cooperatives by the end of 2009, according to Zang.Outstanding loans by these institutions totaled 18.1 billion yuan, of which 36 percent went to farmers and more than 50 percent to small businesses, he said.The government has been trying to boost lending to farmers and companies in the countryside, and the CBRC announced last year a plan to set up 1,293 rural financial institutions by 2011 to boost rural development.

"The second plane, which was delayed due to limited capacity of the Haitian airport, will arrive on Jan. 26."Since Jan. 13, the 60-member emergency rescue team sent by the Chinese government has fully engaged in disaster relief in the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince, he said. "The team has carried out effective search and rescue operations at the headquarters of MINUSTAH (the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti), the prime minister's palace and other places, with a number of bodies found, including those of Special Representative Hedi Annabi of MINUSTAH and other UN staff.""The medical team of the Chinese rescue team are providing medical support for several hundred local people everyday," he said. BEIJING, March 12 (Xinhua) -- The gang-related trials in southwest China's Chongqing were carried out in an open, just and transparent way, Qian Feng, president of the Higher People's Court of Chongqing, said here Friday.Qian made the remarks when attending a panel meeting of the annual session of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, in Beijing."The crackdown on gangs was just one of the judicial work highlights in Chongqing last year," Qian said while attending the meeting. "The number of gang-related cases and those involved was relatively low in Chongqing compared with the country's figures.""We heard those cases strictly according to the criminal law ," Qian said.He said more than 200 deputies to legislatures at different levels and hundreds of journalists heard the court proceedings of those cases, particularly the case of Wen Qiang, a former judicial chief of the municipality.Chongqing started a sweeping crackdown against organized crimes in the city in June last year, in which more than 3,300 suspects were arrested.A total of 87 officials were prosecuted after the massive crackdown for being related with gangs, including 12 high-ranking officials.
