BEIJING, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- China's quality watchdog said on Saturday the latest tests on Chinese milk powder found no trace of melamine.     It was the seventh round of tests for the industrial chemical since the report of the tainted baby formula scandal that left at least three infants dead and sickened more than 50,000 others, according to the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.     The tests covered 105 batches of baby formula from 20 brands in 10 provinces and 161 batches of other milk powder from 52 brands in 15 provinces, the agency said.     So far, 804 batches of baby formula from 66 brands and 1,126 batches of other milk powder from 161 brands produced after Sept. 14 have been tested and none contained melamine.     Earlier on Friday, the agency said the 12th round of tests found that Chinese liquid dairy products met the new temporary restrictions on melamine.     So far, the quality watchdog had conducted sample tests on 5,797 batches of liquid dairy products manufactured after Sept. 14from 136 brands and found all safely under the limit.     Last week, the government set temporary melamine content limits in dairy products of a maximum of 1 mg per kg of infant formula and a maximum 2.5 mg per kg for liquid milk, milk powder and food products that contained at least 15 percent milk.     Melamine, often used in the manufacturing of plastics, was added to sub-standard or diluted milk to make the protein levels appear higher.

LIMA, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese President Hu Jintao met his Peruvian counterpart Alan Garcia Wednesday in Lima for talks on how to deepen comprehensive cooperative partnership between China and the Latin American nation.     The meeting took place soon after the Chinese leader's arrival in the Peruvian capital from Havana.     In a written statement issued upon his arrival here, the Chinese president said he will exchange views with Garcia and other Peruvian leaders on ways to deepen bilateral ties.     Following their talks, the two leaders will attend a signing ceremony of documents on cooperation in trade, customs, quality control and poverty reduction.     Peru is one of China's major trading partners in Latin America,with two-way trade totaling 6 billion U.S. dollars in 2007, a 53 percent increase over the previous year.     While in Lima, Hu will attend the Economic Leaders' Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum, which will focus on the world financial crisis, support for the Doha round oftrade talks, food and energy security, and regional economic integration.     The Chinese president will also meet with leaders of several APEC member economies on the sidelines of the APEC meeting.

BRUSSELS, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao arrived in Brussels on Thursday evening for an official visit to the European Union (EU) headquarters.     The premier was welcomed at the Brussels international airport by European Commission officials, Belgian Foreign Ministry officials, officials of the Chinese mission to the EU and the Chinese embassy in Belgium, as well as Chinese students studying in Belgium.     In a written statement distributed to the press upon his arrival, Wen said the world is undergoing profound changes with a volatile international situation, more regional conflicts and a spreading financial crisis.     In this context, to enhance dialogue, promote consultations and deepen cooperation is in the interests of both China and the EU, and in line with the trend of the times, which is for peace, stability and development, he said.     Wen said he is looking forward to having frank and in-depth exchange of views with EU leaders on China-EU relations, on how to jointly deal with the global financial crisis, and on other international and regional issues of common concern.     "I hope and believe that this visit, as an important trip of confidence, will enhance the confidence of China and the EU in their future relations and in practical and mutually beneficial cooperation. I also hope and believe that this visit will enhance the confidence of the international community in the all-round strategic partnership between China and the EU," he said.     During his two-day visit in Brussels, Wen is scheduled to hold talks with European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso. He will also meet EU foreign and security policy chief Javier Solana.     Brussels is the third leg of Wen's European tour after Switzerland, where he attended the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos, and Germany. The trip will also take him to Spain and Britain.

BEIJING, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao called on domestic companies to pump up confidence in coping with the global financial crisis during his inspection of enterprises in eastern Shanghai and Zhejiang Province from Friday to Sunday.     Wen said buoying up their confidence was "a powerful weapon to deal with the adverse effects of the global economic turbulence and financial turmoil" when inspecting local private enterprises and large-scale companies.     "Enterprises must have confidence for them to stabilize market expectations. Confidence is what they need to tide over the difficult times," he said.     Wen, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, pointed out the private sector played an important role in keeping the stable and relatively fast economic growth momentum, creating more jobs and maintaining the social stability. LANZHOU, Nov.18 (Xinhua) -- Authorities in northwest China's Gansu Province have put the violent protest under control after a group of petitioners attacked local government buildings on Monday night, said a provincial government official.     The protesters have left the government building and the social order has resumed normal in Longnan City, where the unrest erupted, on Tuesday night.     More than 30 residents in Dongjiang Town, Wudu District, who faced resettlement, gathered at the city's government around 9:30 a.m. on Monday, asking the authorities for proper solutions concerning their farmland, housing and livelihoods.     The unrest resulted from a planned relocation of the city's government which would force the residents to be resettled.     The protesters talked with some officials on Monday but they failed to reach any agreement. On Monday night, more people joined them and some of the protesters attacked government buildings, damaged vehicles and facilities, and injured some policemen who tried to maintain order, according to a report of the provincial government.     The government's relocation plan has not been approved by the central government yet, the report said.
