CORYDON, Ind. — “We’re probably behind the times a little bit, but we’re a close-knit, tight community,” said Sherry Watson, the owner of Kent Java Bar Coffee. Welcome to Corydon: a small town in southern Indiana, just over the border from Kentucky. “It’s really dull most of the time, so it’s important to have these local flavors," said Alexander Laske, who lives in town. They’re known for a few things. The site of the original capital of Indiana, a small skirmish in the civil war — and Butt Drugs.“Yes, I love Butt Drugs,” said Kathy White, a customer. “Oh yeah, Butt Drugs are great,” said Frank Law, another customer. “We all definitely heart our Butt drugs, they have a lot of fannies,” Laske said. Butt Drugs is probably not what you think it is. It’s an old-fashioned pharmacy, owned by Katie Butt-Beckort. She’s the third-generation Butt to run the place. “I started working when I was 9, behind the cash register. But professionally I started working in 2002,” said Butt-Beckort. Katie’s grandfather, William “Blackie” Butt, opened the store in 1952. It’s a full-service pharmacy with an old-fashioned soda counter and they sell 35-cent coffee. The name is just the cherry on top. “I try to know everyone’s name, yes, and I try to learn it by the second or third visit,” said employee Katie McGraw. Believe it or not, in town, the name isn’t their biggest draw. It’s the store’s priority on family friendly service. Katie McGraw works the front and she knows which customers like their bags stapled and which ones don’t. “We have a lot of customers that have shopped here their whole life, they’ve never shopped anywhere else. Their kids come here, their grandkids come here, their great-grandkids, so we just like to make it feel like a family atmosphere here,” she said. And It really is a family affair. Katie’s mom, Julie McGraw, has been a pharmacy tech for Butt’s for more than 25 years. “They have always been a pleasure to work for, they have always treated me like family,” said Julie McGraw. That family atmosphere has paid off. The independent pharmacy fills more than 2,000 prescriptions a week. Which helps stave off the competition. “We have a CVS, a Walgreens and a Walmart all within a mile and a half of here. And they’ve been here for years,” said Butt-Beckort. While the family friendly store has held off the big brands, it still finds its more risque side. “Yeah so she had a good base, we had t shirts, we had the classic 'I love Butt Drugs.' I mean that’s been a cornerstone for years,” said Trista Melton, who runs the drugstore’s marketing. While they were embracing their name before, the pharmacy is really turning it into an opportunity. “I think my best thing is making the Butt Liquors logo,” Melton said. “We’ve always sold liquor. People say, 'oh, well you just started selling liquor. ' No, we’ve had a three-way license for years, but we renamed that department Butt Liquors. Because we can,” said Butt-Beckort. “We took some things that have always been big here, like free parking in the rear," Melton said. “Funny, but you know, also real. Used to (be) you had to pay to park in downtown Cordyn, it was like , that was a big deal.” And customers, whether from town or tourists, love it. “Everyone loves Butt Drugs,” one customer said in the store. “Classic, it’s a one-of-a-kind, that’s for sure,” White said. So much so, that they can’t keep merchandise on the shelf. “I mean, we have to order shirts in every single week, we cannot keep them in stock,” Melton said. And the online store keeps things moving for those who can’t make it to Indiana. “We’ve shipped to six countries, so we’re kind of a worldwide thing,” Melton said. That makes everyone — from the employees to the owner — proud to work at Butt Drugs. “If I go out and meet new people and they ask where I work, I’m always proud to say it — Butt Drugs — and get a little bit of a look like, 'what did you say?' ” McGraw said.“Really, you know there’s a lot of people with the last name Butt in this world, I think we might be the only Butt Drugs though,” Butt-Beckort said. 4133
NEW YORK, N.Y. – In a skyscraper, nearly 50 floors above a New York City, a group of women are gathering to ask for more. “We’ve barely budged in two decades,” said Kim Churches, CEO of the American Association of University Women. What’s barely budged are women’s salaries, still lagging far behind what men make in America. That’s where the “Ask For More” workshop campaign is stepping in. The American Association of University Women, along with numerous other groups, are holding free workshops across the country to teach women how to successfully negotiate a higher salary. The goal: to train 10 million women in the next three years. “Women make up half the labor force, yet it is still is a man’s world in how workplace hiring and promotions take place,” Churches said. “And it’s on us to really change them.” The numbers are sobering. For every dollar a man makes, women make an average of 79 cents on the dollar. It’s even worse for minority women: African-American women make 62 cents on the dollar; Hispanic women make 54 cents. “I found myself needing to ask for more money than I think I was getting,” said Samantha Hamidan, who is an immigration lawyer. Hamidan came to one of the workshops in New York City, after recently trying to ask for a raise. “I’m hoping to really be able to parlay these skills into asking for more money at the next position,” she said. A 72-year old woman was gored by a bison in Yellowstone National Park on Thursday, June 25.A news release from park officials says the tourist approached within 10 feet of a bison several times to take its photo, and the bison gored her. It happened Thursday evening at the woman's campsite at Bridge Bay Campground.Rangers provided immediate medical care to the woman who sustained numerous goring wounds. She was then flown via helicopter to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.“The series of events that led to the goring suggest the bison was threatened by being repeatedly approached to within 10 feet,” said Yellowstone’s senior bison biologist, Chris Geremia. “Bison are wild animals that respond to threats by displaying aggressive behaviors like pawing the ground, snorting, bobbing their head, bellowing, and raising their tail. If that doesn’t make the threat (in this instance it was a person) move away, a threatened bison may charge. To be safe around bison, stay at least 25 yards away, move away if they approach, and run away or find cover if they charge.”This is the second incident of a bison injuring a visitor in 2020; the park re-opened several weeks ago after a prolonged COVID-19 closure.Several recent incidents involving visitors and wildlife at Yellowstone:Earlier this month, a visitor was knocked to the ground after getting too close to a bison.In July 2019, a group of about 50 people got too close to a bison, which then charged and knocked a 9-year-old girl into the air. CASA GRANDE, Ariz. – Schools across the nation are having trouble filling teacher jobs – so districts are coming up with unique solutions. The Casa Grande Union High School District has looked overseas to help fill their teacher positions – which led us to Melvin Injosa. “If you ask me to dance I’ll suck, if you ask me to sing I’ll suck more, but if you want me to do science, physics, I’ll pour myself out,” said Melvin Injosa, teacher at Vista Grande High School in Casa Grande, Arizona. He teaches physics and chemistry and moved to Arizona from the Philippines a few years ago. He’s in the U.S. through a J-1 Visa teacher program, which allows him to teach and learn in America for up to five years. Injosa is currently in his fourth year. “It’s the best experience so far, for me,” he said, after moving here with his wife who also teaches at the school. “Many of our math and science jobs are filled by teachers from the Philippines,” said Steve Bebee, Superintendent of the Casa Grande Union High School District. Of the over 200 teachers they oversee, 18 are teaching through the J-1 Visa teacher program. Ten others finished their terms last year. “There is not an abundance of teachers applying in our district and coming our way,” Bebee explained. Arizona, California, Florida, Texas, New Mexico, North Carolina, and South Carolina have some of the highest numbers of J-1 Visa teachers, and that number rises year over year. Arizona had 187 in 2018, while North Carolina had the most with 522 participants, according to the U.S. State Department. But the new approach to hiring qualified teachers hasn’t been a hit with everyone. “Do we cut out jobs for people that are already in the U.S.? And we are not, because if we had those positions we wouldn’t have to look,” Bebee said. Just under 21 percent of teacher jobs in Arizona were still vacant a few weeks into the 2018-2019 school year, accounting for about 1,443 positions, according to a survey of 150 schools by the Arizona Personnel Admin Association completed in August 2019. “For teachers in Arizona, you’re lucky to get one applicant,” said Justin Wing, director of human resources for the Washington Elementary School District. “It hit us pretty hard.” Wing created the report that shows how the lack of teachers applying for open positions has impacted class sizes and the need for long-term substitute teachers over the years. Wing explained that Arizona is top five in highest class sizes across the nation. And the average teacher salary in the state is around ,000 lower than the national average, with Arizona sitting at ,973, according to the Learning Policy Institute in 2018. The combo of high class sizes and low pay has made it difficult to attract qualified educators in a lot of states.“I think a big issue is related to working conditions,” Leanne Abushar said. Abushar is an elementary school teacher in Phoenix, Arizona and the president of Phoenix Elementary Classroom Teachers Association.“Pay, working conditions, benefits, all of those things link back to teacher recruitment and retention,” she said. Abushar and the rest of the association are working on getting a contract in place for better pay, and other demands for teachers. She says many people just aren't applying for teacher jobs because they aren't appealing to applicants. “Everybody has been stuck with trying to find remedies,” Bebee said. "Every district is prioritizing their recruiting efforts differently, because if all of us are doing the same thing, we’re hitting still that same pool,” Wing explained. Which brings us back to Melvin Injosa’a chemistry class. Despite low wages, he currently gets paid more in this country than he would in his own. About five times more than his salary back in the Philippines.Melvin understands he has a limited time in the United States, but he makes the most of it. “Even if I only have five years here, I think I learned a lot,” he said. 3964
