SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County public health officials have reported 352 new COVID-19 cases and no new fatalities, raising the region's total to 57,102 cases with deaths remaining at 891.Of the 12,879 tests reported Saturday, 3% returned positive with 239 people hospitalized.The county avoided the state's purple tier, the most restrictive, for yet another week on Tuesday, remaining in the less restrictive red tier of the state's four-tiered coronavirus monitoring system.The county's adjusted case rate dropped to 6.5 new daily COVID-19 cases per 100,000 population.According to the California Department of Public Health, the county's unadjusted case rate is 7.4 per 100,000 -- enough to be in the purple tier, which has a floor of 7 per 100,000. However, the high volume of tests the county is able to perform daily allows for an adjustment from the state. This adjustment has kept the county in the red tier for several weeks, saving it from having to shut down nearly all nonessential indoor businesses.The state data, updated every Tuesday, reflects the previous week's case data to determine where counties stand in the state's reopening system.San Diego County did show modest improvement, dropping 0.4 from last week's unadjusted case rate of 7.8. The testing positivity rate continued an upward trend, rising 0.2% from last week to reach 3.5%, but remains low enough for this metric to remain in the orange tier. If a county reports statistics meeting metrics in a higher tier for two consecutive weeks, it will move into that more restrictive tier for a minimum of three weeks.The state's health equity metric, which looks at the testing positivity for areas with the lowest healthy conditions, dropped from 5.5% to 5.1% and entered the orange tier. This metric does not move counties backward to more restrictive tiers, but is required to advance.All students at San Diego State University are under a stay-at-home advisory until 6 a.m. Monday. University officials said the move was made to discourage students from participating in Halloween events in which physical distancing cannot be done. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Bengal tiger cub rescued during a smuggling attempt at the US-Mexico border was joined Monday by a Sumatran tiger cub from the National Zoo in Washington, D.C.The Bengal tiger was discovered last month at the Otay Mesa border crossing last month and taken to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park for care.RELATED: Smuggled tiger cub found at US-Mexico borderThe Sumatran tiger that joined the cub in San Diego is nine-weeks-old. He has been fed by humans since last month because his mother became aggressive toward him. Zoo personnel said the cub would "chuff" in a friendly tiger greeting but his mother, Damai, would not respond.Animal care staff from the Safari Park were on hand at San Diego International Airport to meet the cub and the keepers upon their arrival. The young tiger was immediately transported to the Safari Park’s Ione and Paul Harter Animal Care Center, where he will continue to receive the care he needs.“We are beyond thrilled to welcome this tiger cub to the Safari Park,” said Andy Blue, associate curator of mammals at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. “His keepers reported he did extremely well during the flight — slept most of the way. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County health officials have reported 2,416 new COVID-19 infections and 11 new deaths, marking 107,372 total cases and 1,162 deaths.Sunday marked the fifth consecutive day that more than 2,000 new cases were reported, with 2,490 cases reported Saturday, 2,867 cases -- a record - - reported Friday, 2,050 reported Thursday and 2,104 Wednesday. It is also the 13th day with more than 1,000 new cases. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Sales of previously owned single-family homes and attached properties like condominiums and townhomes both fell more than 15 percent from October to November, according to data released Friday by the Greater San Diego Association of Realtors. Single-family home sales fell from 1,719 in October to 1,452 in November, a 15.5 percent drop. Attached property sales suffered an even steeper drop, falling 22.8 percent from 942 in October to 727 in November. Home sales have trended down in the second half of the year since the high water mark of more than 2,200 single-family homes and nearly 1,200 attached properties sold in June.Month-over-month home prices also fell from October to November, albeit not as drastically. Single-family home prices dropped 1.4 percent from 3,700 to 5,000, while attached property prices fell 5 percent -- from 8,000 to 7,000. Prices of single-family and attached properties have remained steady for most of the year, according to the GSDAR.``The end of the year and the holiday season are usually a sluggish time for home sale activity,'' said SDAR President Steve Fraioli. ``But it does appear that the pace of home price growth has slowed. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to extend an agreement with Southern California Edison to receive emergency planning funds from the utility as it removes spent nuclear fuel from the decommissioned San Onofre Nuclear Generation Station.The county's Office of Emergency Services entered a similar memorandum of understanding with SCE in 2015, through which the company provided radiological emergency planning funds to five jurisdictions around the plant, including San Diego County, through the end of Fiscal Year 2019-20.A county staff report estimates SCE will pay the county 6,500 in the remainder of the agreement.The remainder of the spent fuel is planned to be moved from spent fuel pools to dry cask storage by the end of this summer, but the memorandum approved by the board runs through the end of Fiscal Year 2049 or whenever all spent fuel is removed from the site -- whichever comes first.The federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the State of California do not require decommissioned nuclear power plants to reimburse local jurisdictions for emergency planning, but SCE has agreed to continue paying jurisdictions surrounding the plant, for planning and preparation for radiological emergencies.San Onofre hasn't produced power since a steam leak in 2012, and SCE closed the plant the following year and began decommissioning activities.When the California Coastal Commission voted 9-0 last October to allow SCE to begin dismantling the plant, the canisters were being moved from a "wet storage" facility to a newly constructed "dry storage" facility on the site. San Onofre is located on 85 acres of the Camp Pendleton Marine Corps base and is home to 3.55 million pounds of spent nuclear fuel, the San Diego Union Tribune reported last year.The nuclear waste is being stored in self-cooling canisters which take in cool air and expel hot air. 1925
