CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) - A major makeover is underway at the Hotel del Coronado, and now the project is moving into phase two, which includes a new entrance. On Wednesday, hotel guests and the public will be able to use the hotel's new underground parking structure, which features 729 spots. For the next two years, guests will enter the hotel from the north side, as the main entrance is redesigned. The temporary entrance can be accessed from R.H. Dana Pl. The project will cost 0 million, a figure that's double the original estimate."To ensure that the Hotel Del is staying relevant with the times, but also that it's here for another 130 years," said Nick OrRico, the resort manager. OrRico says they've been working diligently to enhance the guest experience while construction is underway. After the popular restaurant Sun Deck closed for construction, the hotel created an alternative eatery on the beach with a food truck. "We are still looking for ways to build unique experiences for guests, so they still want to come over here and experience our beautiful beach," said OrRico. Holiday traditions will continue despite renovations, including Skating by the Sea, which kicks off this Friday.For Thanksgiving, the Hotel Del is expecting close to 3,000 guests for dinner in the Crown Room and Ball Room, plus more in the restaurants.On Christmas Eve, they'll serve 500 guests in the Crown Room. Countless times, every day across the country, dispatchers field calls for help that can be hard to answer.In Eugene, Oregon, sometimes the answer is people like Dan Felts.“Sometimes, what we need in our most desperate hour is somebody to talk to,” Felts said.In Eugene and its neighboring city of Springfield, when a non-emergency, non-criminal call comes in through 911 or a non-emergency line to a dispatcher, they can send a mental health professional like Felts, instead of police.“Make sure people have access to resources, other than law enforcement, when they’re having mental health crisis,” Felts explained.Felts is a member of CAHOOTS, which stands for Crisis Assistance Helping out on the Streets."We don’t show up with weaponry, we don’t show up with handcuffs,” Felts said.The belief is unarmed CAHOOTS teams of crisis workers and medics can be a better response to people struggling with issues like mental health or emotional crisis."When a police officer goes and they look like me, gun, badge, you know it’s a little demonstrative and sometimes it has the tendency to escalate the situation,” said Eugene Police Chief Chris Skinner. "When somebody like CAHOOTS goes, it’s people who are kind of dressed the same and look the same. They just have a softer approach, and it tends to deescalate things."“There are lots of these kind of call types that are non-violent in nature; they’re simply somebody crying out for help,” says Ben Brubaker, director at White Bird Clinic.The clinic is a non-profit that provides an array of services like counseling, dental care, and other services to people in need in the Eugene area. It’s run CAHOOTS since the late 80s. Comet NEOWISE may be on its way out, but that doesn't mean that the night sky's light show is set to end.According to the American Meteor Society, two meteor showers are set to peak in the coming days, which could result in several fireballs that light up the sky.One of those showers is the Southern Delta-Aquariids, which, according to NASA, are typically visible between July 12 and Aug. 23. But the agency reports that the system will peak in activity early Monday morning.At its viewing peak — in the southern hemisphere on a clear dark night — the Southern Delta-Aquariids can produce up to 25 meteors an hour, NASA says. Unfortunately, Americans won't be able to see that many fireballs, but experts still say some may still be visible — especially for those with minimal light pollution and clear skies.NASA says the Southern Delta-Aquariids will be most visible between moonset and first dawn on early Monday morning.The American Meteor Society also reports that the Alpha Capricornids will also peak early next week. While the AMS notes that the shower isn't particularly strong (about five meteors an hour), the meteors it does produce are particularly bright and visible.The AMS says the Alpha Capricornids will peak Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.According to the Associated Press, Comet NEOWISE will be visible in the night sky through mid-August before it heads back out toward the outer solar system. 1430

(KGTV) — An Air Force pilot who was killed in Vietnam was honored on Tuesday with an official U.S Air Force Memorial Flyover in Coronado.His widow also honored for her years of work, fighting for prisoners of war and those missing in action to be acknowledged. Colonel Arthur "Art" S. Mearns' plane was shot down in 1966, but for 11 years his wife and daughters didn't know if he had been taken as a POW or if he had been killed.LONGFORM: Teachers turn Marine Recruits, providing perspective for studentsDuring those 11 years of not knowing, his wife wrote letters and visited congressmen, reminding them of all the men who were still unaccounted for. Today, Colonel Mearns' wife and daughters were on hand for the ceremony. The parents said they refuse to cut their sons’ locs in order to conform.“I don’t see how his hair stops him from learning or doing anything else,” Tina Johnson said.Nate and Tina Johnson's 6-year-old son, Asten, has been enrolled at Zion Temple Christian Academy for the past three years with no issue – but when they reached out to enroll their 3-year-old, they were told both boys were not allowed to have locs.“At this point, I’m fighting for my son,” Tina Johnson said.For the Johnsons, their hair and their heritage are intertwined. It’s a message they passed on to their children.“He doesn’t need to conform to fit any kind of mold,” Tina Johnson said.The family said they were disappointed to find out the predominantly-Black school they’ve been sending Asten to since Pre-K wouldn’t take him back with his hair in a certain style.“If this was a school in a different neighborhood, I don’t think the sting would be as hard,” she said.The Zion Temple Christian Academy in Avondale sent out an email saying "hair must be cut one inch short." Braids and design cuts for boys are also banned. WCPO reached out to Zion Temple Christian Academy for comment on this story but could not reach anyone who was allowed to comment on the school’s hair policy.“I’m sure it’s grown some, but it’s not drastically different from what it was in the school year,” she said. “He did start transitioning to this loc journey during the school year.”The Johnsons will be enrolling their kids in other schools – a tough, last-minute decision they said they feel they have no choice but to make.“It’s okay to be who you are, be confident in your own skin and relish that,” Nate Johnson said. “It’s something that you should be proud of.
