CARDIFF, Calif. (KGTV) - A pedestrian was struck and killed Saturday night in Cardiff after running across Interstate 5 and into the path of a car, authorities said.The incident happened just before 6:40 p.m. on the northbound lanes of the I-5 near Birmingham Drive, according to the California Highway Patrol.CHP officials said the pedestrian, a male in his 20s, was being transported via ambulance from Tri-City Hospital to the VA Medical Center when he suddenly jumped out of the vehicle. The ambulance was traveling between 50 to 60 mph, CHP said.The man survived the jump but proceeded to run across the southbound lanes. He hopped the center divide and was struck by a motorist traveling northbound.CHP said the man died in the collision.The motorist that struck the man remained at the scene and was cooperating with officers.A SigAlert was issued at about 7 p.m. for the three left lanes on northbound I-5. Canada is the latest country to approve a COVID-19 vaccine candidate made by Pfizer and BioNTech, according to ABC News and the Washington Post.On Monday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that the vaccine would arrive in Canada next week and that doses would be distributed at that time.The FDA is expected to meet tomorrow to discuss granting Emergency Use Authorization to the Pfizer vaccine. Approval is expected, and Americans may begin receiving doses as soon as next week.The drug has already been administered to some patients in the United Kingdom, who approved the vaccine for emergency use last week. On Wednesday, officials announced that two people with extensive histories with allergies had suffered "adverse effects" from the injections, but both patients are expected to be OK. Carl Kasell, a fixture on NPR for more than 30 years on "Morning Edition" and later its quiz show "Wait Wait ... Don't Tell Me!," died Tuesday from complications from Alzheimer's disease. He was 84.Kasell began his career at NPR as a part-time employee on "All Things Considered" in the mid-1970s, then became the news announcer for the first broadcast of "Morning Edition" in 1979.In that role Kasell became one of public radio's most recognizable voices. Yet after years of being associated with breaking news, he had the opportunity to showcase a lighter side of himself starting in 1998 as judge and scorekeeper on "Wait Wait," hosted by Peter Sagal. An early prize for winners was to have Kasell record the outgoing message on their answering machine.In a statement, Sagal called him "the kindest, most decent person I have ever known," adding that after listening to him for years, "Hearing him say my name, that very first time, made me feel like I had somehow made it." (KGTV) - After a woman died in a jet ski crash in the Agua Hedionda Lagoon in Carlsbad on Sunday, Stephen and Aimee Cochrane were confronted with a painful memory.“I just cannot believe that this would have happened. It’s just wrong,” said Aimee.Her indignation was amplified by the fact that she and her husband were involved in a crash in the same lagoon in July of 2016.They had decided to rent a jet ski on their anniversary, something they had never done before.“We wanted to do something different,” recalled Stephen.But when they got to California Watersports at the Agua Hedionda Lagoon, they had second thoughts.“It was wild. It was mayhem out there,” said Stephen, describing the busy activity on the water.Despite their hesitations, they decided to go for it. But before they had even completed one lap around the buoys, they said they were t-boned by another rider.“We both flew off the jet ski,” remembers Aimee.Stephen said he momentarily blacked out. Aimee remembers swimming over to him and seeing him face down in the water.He was eventually pulled onto a boat and taken into an ambulance. He said he ended up with three broken ribs and a fractured sternum.Aimee suffered some cuts and bruises on her legs, but no broken bones.Stephen said he had to take three weeks off of work and pay ,000 in out of pocket medical expenses. He says he still has pain in his chest from the injury.After the crash, they said they had no contact with the owners of the rental company. They said they were unaware if the company had made any changes to prevent future crashes.10News spoke to an employee at California Waterspouts who said they would not be providing any statements.
