Papa John's is trying to repair the damage caused by its CEO's controversial comments about the NFL protests.Two weeks ago, CEO John Schnatter triggered fierce criticism by saying the pizza chain's sales were hurt by the NFL's handling of the controversy over players kneeling during the National Anthem to protest police violence and racial injustice."This should have been nipped in the bud a year and a half ago," Schnatter said on a conference call with investors. "The controversy is polarizing the customer, polarizing the country."The comments spurred a backlash on social media, made the company the butt of jokes on late night shows and forced it to distance itself from neo-Nazi groups.On Tuesday evening, Papa John's -- which has been a league sponsor since 2010 -- attempted an apology on Twitter."The statements made on our earnings call were describing the factors that impact our business and we sincerely apologize to anyone that thought they were divisive," it said. "That definitely was not our intention."The pizza chain said that it supports "the players' movement to create a new platform for change" but that it also believes that "as Americans, we should honor our anthem.""We will work with the players and league to find a positive way forward. Parents are approaching back-to-school as best they can, whether their kids are learning at home or face-to-face in the classroom. Many are also relying on after-school programs to help keep their kids mentally and academically successful."The reality is that because most of our schools are virtual or hybrid, after school is all the time and so our programs have been on overdrive to try and meet the need of all of our working parents. And whether you’re working from home or you have to go into work, it’s really hard to do that when you have kids that are home," said Jodi Grant, the Executive Director of the Afterschool Alliance.Grant says after-school programs during the pandemic are essential. The national organization works with 27,000 programs across the country that are not only providing meals to children, but also virtual classroom spaces and childcare for working parents."I think we need to stop and put the kids first. And there’s a lot of creative ways that our kids can be learning, and they don't need to be isolated. After-school programs have jumped to do that and jumped through hoops to do that," said Grant.YMCA of the USA has slowly been reopening some programs since the spring, including a number of day camps this summer. As the fall approached, organizers realized they needed to expand after-school programs."We saw the need in the community to pivot to an all-day childcare model, where the children can now come to the Y, they’ll be separated into different pods and staff as they go through their virtual learning programs via their schools," said Ryan O'Malley with YMCA of the USA.O'Malley says there are more than 370 YMCA locations providing full-day childcare and virtual learning classrooms in 45 states across the country. Boys and Girls Clubs of America has 4,700 locations in the U.S. and right now more than 83% of them are providing some level of service."I think it's critical for both the physical safety but also the emotional safety for those young people and being able to provide those services," said Misty Miller, Senior Vice President for Organizational Development, Field Operations for the Boys and Girls Clubs of America.Miller says a majority of their Boys and Girls Clubs have opened in some capacity."With many of our schools being virtual, we have about 1,300 sites that are opening for the full day to be these virtual learning hubs or safety zones, if you will, which is a different place for us. And it's a very expensive place for us. Clubs are increasing their operating costs," said Miller. Boys and Girls Clubs reports it’s spending at least three times as much as it normally does on after-school care to accommodate safety protocols for COVID-19. YMCA of the USA says they've lost more than billion in revenue since the spring and that after-school programs are suffering financially right now."Very much so. I think it's a combination of things. One is that the programs that are operating its much more expensive to do. In many cases they have to rent additional space, they have to hire more staff, it's longer hours. We are pushing very hard in the next COVID bill to get some federal resources into after-school [programs] so that we can do this one-time short-term influx of money," said O'Malley.Some after-school programs are even helping families cover the costs of childcare, since many parents are finding it hard economically right now to pay the fees."We are looking to the communities for that support but we’re also looking to the federal government for that support. Ys are facing financial hardship that only the federal government can provide, so we’re really asking Congress to give back and look for that relief for charities that are so important to keep non-profits open like the Y open," said O'Malley. 3810
PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — Deputies say that a Florida man who robbed a bank on Thursday began throwing money out the window of his getaway car as he led police on a chase.According to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, just before 4 p.m., 37-year-old Anquan Walters walked into the Hancock Bank in unincorporated Clearwater wearing long pants, a long sleeve shirt, gloves, glasses with a fake beard and pantyhose over his head.Witnesses told investigators that Walters was carrying a black handgun when he jumped over the counter, he ordered people to the ground and demanded money. Walters was given an undisclosed amount of cash and he exited the bank.Detectives say Walters got into a 1998 Toyota Camry and fled northbound on U.S. Highway 19.As Walters was fleeing from the bank, multiple dye packs exploded and Walters started throwing cash out of the window of the Camry, onto U.S. Highway 19 North, deputies say.A viewer shared a photo of the money scattered on U.S. 19 with Scripps station WFTS in Tampa.Responding deputies spotted Walter's Camry traveling northbound towards the intersection of U.S. Highway 19 and Curlew Road. Deputies tried stopping Walters but he fled in the Camry at a high rate of speed, eastbound on Curlew Road from U.S. Highway 19 North.Deputies initiated a vehicle pursuit and successfully deployed a tire deflation device that deflated the tires on Walter's Camry as he approached Countryside Boulevard.Detectives say Walters lost control of the Camry and crashed into two vehicles that were stopped at the intersection of Curlew Road and Countryside Boulevard.Detectives say Corporal Phillip Love was pursuing Walter's Camry at the time of the crash. Corporal Love was unable to stop his marked 2013 Chevrolet Tahoe cruiser before crashing into Walter's Camry at the intersection.Walters reportedly abandoned the damaged Camry and fled on foot northbound into a nearby apartment complex. Deputies chased Walters on foot and apprehended him shortly after.Detectives say Walter's clothes were covered in colored dye as a result of the bank's dye pack exploding.The driver of one of the vehicles Walter hit was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. No other injuries have been reported.Detectives arrested Walters and transported him to the Pinellas County Jail.Walters was charged with one count of Armed Robbery, one count of Fleeing and Eluding Law Enforcement, one count of Leaving the Scene of a Crash with Bodily Injury and one count of Leaving the Scene of a Crash with Property Damage.The investigation continues. 2599
Part of the cure for COVID-19 might be found in sharks dwelling deep in our oceans.“Everybody’s, ‘oh, there’s a hundred million being taken anyway, why are you worried about vaccine?’” said Stefanie Brendl of Shark Allies, a nonprofit for shark conservation.She says during the pandemic, more sharks are being harvested for squalene, an oil found in their livers and is often used to increase the effectiveness of vaccines.“The more products we come up with that require shark parts, the more we’re fueling this 100,000,000 sharks a year number,” she said.Brendl says many pharmaceutical companies are using shark squalene to produce a coronavirus vaccine and that if everyone in the world received two doses, 500,000 sharks would have to be slaughtered to meet the demand.“We need to look at this and we need to hold the vaccine companies accountable to test alternatives,” she said.One of the companies, Brendl, is calling out pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline, which plans on manufacturing 1 billion doses of a “pandemic vaccine” in 2021.While GSK says squalene pulled from shark livers is used in some of its vaccines, the company claims it’s also exploring squalene found in some plants.“One research team has tried to make in yeast so you could grow cultures of yeasts similar to fermenting beer,” said David Kroll, Ph.D., a professor of pharmacology at the University of Colorado, Anschutz Medical Campus.He says finding a cure for coronavirus will be the biggest vaccine undertaking in recent medical history.“The biggest concern is whether more sharks are going to have to be killed for this monumental global effort,” Kroll said.Shark experts believe this is a global challenge.“Many of the sharks that are being targeted are deep sea sharks and they’re found in open ocean environments that may not be protected,” said Chris Lowe, a professor of marine biology and director of the Shark Lab at California State University, Long Beach.He says tens of millions of sharks are already killed each year and some companies poach shark corpses for squalene to make numerous products ranging from vaccines to cosmetics.Lowe warns an increase in killings could impact our ecosystem.“Those animals play a very important role that could affect people on land,” he said.While the cost of a cure for COVID-19 is still unknown, Lowe says killing more sharks could mean extinction for several shark species. 2414

With the help of guidebooks distributed throughout the stores, workers took part in sensitive conversations.
