SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A rash of mail tampering incidents has led to missing money and an unusual M.O.On Winnebago Avenue in late June, Kelly Craig was standing in front of her home talking to a neighbor."Around 10:30 a.m., the mail carrier dropped off the mail in front of me," said Craig.A few minutes later, Craig got her mail and noticed something. One of her envelopes was sliced open on the side. "Looks like a razor blade slit the side," said Craig.Inside, she found a birthday card from her mother, mailed from Montana. The usual money was not there. A call to mom revealed 0 in cash should have been inside."Felt panicked and really sad the money was missing, and my mom was really upset," said Craig.Craig wasn't alone. That same day, less than two miles away, her daughter-in-law went to get her mail."She got a wedding card from my sister, and it had cash in it as well," said Craig.The 0 that was inside was gone. That envelope was also sliced open on the left side, but there was one difference. The side and back of the enveloped were resealed with tape."Clearly trying to cover up their stealing of the money," said Craig.When Craig and her daughter-in-law reported it to postal authorities, they say they were told of similar recent incidents, including one if the College Area. On the Nextdoor app , several neighbors also reporting similar incidents. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A local hardware store is hoping to find the family of a mysterious model the store used for an ad when it first opened its doors in the late 1800s.The woman, known as the “Hardware Lady,” modeled hardware items on her dress for one of San Diego Hardware’s first advertisements 125 years ago.The company is hoping to identify the mystery model in time for their December 8 anniversary party. The store also hopes to honor the model and her family.The model’s dress was styled with keys, locks and chains and a small wood burning stove. The woman’s crown was made of spoons, clothespins and other hardware from the store.The store was founded in 1892 and now operates in Kearny Mesa and online. 721

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A piece of Hollywood has made its way to the USS Midway Museum. Thursday crews worked to move a large movie prop onto the deck of the famed vessel: A replica of the TBD Devastator that was used in the movie “Midway." “It’s the only Devastator on display in the world,” says Walt Loftus, Air Wing Director at the USS Midway Museum. “All the rest of them are at the bottom of the ocean.”RELATED: Top Gun 2 plane driven through Coronado streetsThe plane is a replica of the carriers that sailors used at war. The giant plane was a prop used in the upcoming film, starring Woody Harrelson, Luke Evans, and Nick Jonas. It's designed with “big square tubing with foam made into the shape of the devastator,” says Loftus. “But it's the actual size that the Devastator was.”"Midway" follows the story of U.S. Navy sailors and aviators who persevered through the Battle of Midway in 1942. It was only six months after Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A hiker who thought he discovered a puppy along a San Diego trail in March actually ended up taking in a coyote pup.San Diego Humane Society said the man was walking his dog on March 22 in Tierrasanta when he thought he had discovered an abandoned puppy. He ended up bringing the animal home and calling the Humane Society to report his discovery.Humane Law Enforcement found that the puppy wasn't a pooch at all, but actuallyin fact a coyote pup.RELATED: Rattlesnake season officially begins in SoCalOfficers brought the little coyote to the society's Project Wildlife, which works to rehabilitate wildlife for release back into the wild. The pup was then transferred for care at Fund for Animals in Ramona.SDHS said the pup's mother may have been moving the den when the hiker discovered the animal. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A random act of kindness at a Rancho Bernardo grocery store has a grateful grandma paying it forward. Kathy Yezarski went to the Albertsons at Rancho Bernardo and Poway Roads Friday night to buy milk and cereal for her grandchildren, who were staying at her home. She was about to pay for her groceries when she noticed a problem. “When I got to the checkout I was really embarrassed to see that I didn’t have my wallet,” Yezarski said. Yezarski thought she’d have to leave the items behind and return home when “a very kind young man” noticed her dilemma. “The man behind me very quickly said ‘I’ve got this,’” Yezarski said. Yezarski was mortified she had forgotten her wallet. “It was really touching to me…heartwarming that he would do that for someone.” Yezarski was so moved, she posted about the kind act on the Nextdoor app for her neighborhood. She was hoping the young man would see the post but she wasn’t expecting the reaction she received. “I didn’t realize when I posted until after I posted that two previous posts had been about recent shootings, and I think people were just reeling from that, feeling so upset and I think they needed to hear something positive. A lot of people said that: thank you for restoring my faith in humanity,” Yezarski said. She was inspired to perform a kind act of her own. “Beyond just thanking him, I thought - I’ve got to pay this forward. I went on the website for the San Diego Food Bank and donated. I thought, wow, I can’t just let this stop here, I can’t.
