SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A 58-year-old man severely injured after an assault at a home in Clairemont in early April died Monday. According to police, 58-year-old Randy Taing died of his injuries in the evening of April 8. San Diego Police said the incident occurred in the 4100 block of Ashford St. before 12 p.m. The man reportedly called his wife sometime around 11:45 a.m., though his wife said the phone was silent.She asked her son to call, who got through to his dad. That's when the man told his son something along the lines of a possible break-in, police say.The man's son called 9-1-1 and rushed home to find his father with upper body injuries. The man was taken to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said. Police said there were no signs of forced entry, but a safe had been taken. Neighbors of the family-owned business a mile away from their home, Rose Donuts, said the safe probably contained cash from the business. A family friend said the father, who he called Randy, was asleep at home during the robbery because he was filling in for his nephew at work. He said he was baking donuts at 2 a.m. while his nephew was on vacation.Customers who work in the area say the family is beloved. "They have two boys and sometimes they even babysit the grand kids while they’re working... SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A group of Hillcrest residents are fighting a proposed housing tower they say would take the sunshine out of their neighborhood and add traffic. Greystar Development wants to build a seven-story, 111 unit mixed-use housing complex near 7th and Robinson, not far from Whole Foods. The complex would replace the parking lot AT&T employees currently use for the company's building across the street. The lot borders a neighborhood filled with Spanish-style homes. The city gave Greystar a density bonus because it includes nine very low-income units. It also determined the developer would not have to do a costly and time-consuming environmental impact report."Housing, housing, housing is the only thing they're going to consider. And they're not going to consider the impact on the neighborhood that's there," said Tom Mullaney, who heads a group called Uptown United, which is appealing the project. Uptown United is fighting the city's determination that Greystar doesn't have to do an environmental impact report. That goes before the City Council April 23.Mullaney said Uptown United also wants the project scaled back. Jim Ivory, Greystar's senior director of development, said in a statement that company included community input in designing the project, which has the backing of the city's Uptown Community Planning group."We are proud of the design that has evolved in the last 18 months," he said. "Staff and community input has been incorporated along the way for the betterment of the project."Some in the neighborhood also welcome the project. Herbert Ross, who lives down the street, says the AT&T lot has become a public nuisance."The hangout that it's become for people who are homeless who don't clean up after themselves, I think anything would be an improvement to the area," he said. But Michael Bayless says the project would take away the direct sunlight he gets in his home office."I just came from Seattle to escape the lack of sun," he said. "It would be depressing."Greystar's development would also include retail at street level, and a 190 spot parking garage. It would also construct an 86-space parking garage for AT&T employees to use. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A California lawmaker is planning to move forward on a housing bill that would eliminate hyper low-density zoning near transit and job centers.Senate Bill 50 aims to clear the way for apartment buildings and affordable housing in those locations so more people can live near transit and near where they work, proponents say.California State Senator Scott Wiener of San Francisco tells 10News, in January SB 50 will come back before the Senate, and he intends to move it forward.RELATED: Making it in San Diego: Zoning rules partially responsible for low housing supply, report says"California has a massive housing shortage – which threatens our economy, environment, and diversity – and state action is essential to solve this major problem," Wiener said in a statement.While they wait for action at the state level, some San Diego community groups are pushing for local lawmakers to move forward with their version, dubbed SD 50."We are still working in these neighborhoods to try and change those communities," said Ricardo Flores, executive director of the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) San Diego.Flores said the City of San Diego needs to end its single-family home zoning regulations. "I believe San Diegans should be in control of what happens in our neighborhoods. There was nothing in SB 50 to mandate that."If San Diego updated its zoning policies, it wouldn't be alone.City leaders in Minneapolis passed "Minneapolis 2040" which aims to increase affordable housing and racial disparities in housing.Ricardo Flores said he believes it's time for politicians to make San Diego more inclusive."If you own a single-family home on your lot and you want to keep that you should be allowed to keep it, but if you like me and are interested in building a couple extra units for mom and dad to move into or to rent it out to help pay for a mortgage you should be allowed to do that," Flores said.In a statement to 10News, San Diego City Council member and Land Use and Housing Committee member Scott Sherman wrote, "A recent study noted that 47 percent of housing costs are due to government red tape and regulation. Since taking office, I have worked to reform land use codes and streamline the permitting process to make homebuilding less expensive. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A computer virus prevented most of the San Diego Union-Tribune's readership from waking up with a paper Saturday morning.The U-T's Editor in Chief Jeff Light said in a statement online the virus affected the production of the U-T and the LA Times, and the Southern California editions of the Wall Street Journal, and New York Times through Los Angeles' Olympic Printing Plant. Light wrote that systems still used through the paper's former owner, Tribune Publishing, had been compromised by the virus Thursday night and spread to critical systems by Friday.The virus also affected the paper's digital replica online. The U-T said it plans to deliver the Saturday edition with Sunday's edition to print subscribers."I apologize to our customers for this inconvenience. Thank you for your patience and support. We are doing everything we can to restore full service and to continue to make our journalism available to you both in print and digitally," Light's statement read.10News received multiple calls from viewers who did not receive the Saturday edition of the paper.It wasn't immediately clear if Sunday deliveries would be affected as well, though Light said updates would be provided as more information becomes available. 1256
