It's a dire prediction from a study published in the journal Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology that could have life-altering consequences. Health expert Dr. Dahlia Wachs likened insulin to being the key to a door. In most people, it's a naturally occurring hormone the pancreas secretes when we eat sugar so that it can go from the bloodstream and into our cells.But it's a different matter for the millions of people whose bodies either don't make insulin or who have insulin resistance."Type 1 diabetics — they are very dependent on insulin," Wachs said. "They don't make insulin. They get very skinny and we have to give them insulin. There really isn't a lot of other treatments for these Type 1 diabetics.”A shortage of insulin in drug form poses major challenges. "So those with Type 2 diabetes, many of them can take pills, but if they are in poor control we have to give them insulin," Wachs said.Wachs said insulin is expensive to make. She says only three major pharmaceutical companies make it. And the demand isn't the highest here in the United States but other parts of the world, including Africa and Asia. However, the U.S. will have the third highest number of people living with diabetes by 2030.Diabetes is growing at an epidemic rate in the U.S. More than 12 percent of the adult population in Nevada is diabetic, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Every year, 10,000 people are diagnosed with diabetes and an estimated 75,000 have diabetes and don't know it. "So what can we do to prevent the shortage? Well, try to prevent diabetes," she said.That means controlling obesity, exercising and eating healthy. 1943

IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) - Matt Henry, a father of six and avid surfer, says he's always had a positive attitude."It's partly just who I am," he says. "Before getting sick, I was so happy. I mean, if I were a puppy, I'd be wagging my tail all day long."The sickness he's referring to is an inoperable brain tumor, diagnosed four years ago. It affected his mood and personality. But it never affected his spirit."I think I had an attitude of like, this isn't gonna stop me," Henry says. "I've got six kids and a whole life to live. This is not enough to stop me."After surgery to remove part of the tumor, Henry learned to manage his symptoms. Doctors told him his tumor was growing slowly, giving him time. He decided to use that time to live his best life."I called it bucket list living," he says, and he shared his adventures with his family on his YouTube page. He also uses the hashtags #StayStoked and #InoperableMeetsUnstoppable on social media.Now he's sharing something new. Henry is part of a worldwide clinical trial for a new drug called Vorasinedib. A form of it has FDA Approval for treatment of some conditions of Leukemia.The study will see if a different version can help slow brain tumors' growth with a specific type of mutation, which Henry's has."If this trial works and then it's gonna help a lot of people, so I'd love to pave the way," he says.UC San Diego's Moores Cancer Center is one of the clinics taking part in the trial. Director of Neuro-Oncology Dr. David Piccioni says this new drug can be a way to delay harsher forms of treatment like chemotherapy or radiation."The idea behind the trial was trying to come up with something that might sort of kick the can down the road," says Dr. Piccioni. "It's a slow-growing tumor. But it is growing, and it is something (Matt) wants to do something about. And that's sort of the point of this trial."As he's going through the trial, Henry is posting videos about it. He peppers them with his sense of humor and hope. It's his way of showing that if he can keep a positive attitude through this, the rest of us can persevere through our challenges as well."I'm terminal. But the truth is, we're all terminal. I mean, life is a terminal disease. (KGTV) - Police investigated Wednesday the discovery of a body at Border Field State Park in Imperial Beach.The remains were found about 11:15 a.m. at the beachfront park in South San Diego County.Details on the deceased person's identity, including gender and approximate age, were not immediately available, Lt. Hoverboards are once again the target for recalls, as the Consumer Product Safety Commission issued recalls Tuesday on seven models for potential fire hazard. According to the CPSC, the seven recalled hoverboard models have lithium-ion battery packs that can overheat, posing a risk of smoking, catching fire and/or exploding.Nearly 13,000 units are covered by Tuesday's recall.
