For pets, the skies of United Airlines lately have not been so friendly.It's not just the French bulldog that died on a Houston-to-New York flight Monday after a United flight attendant told its owners to put the dog in an overhead bin.Data from the US Department of Transportation show that three times as many animals died on United flights last year than on all the other US carriers put together. As you can see from this chart, 2017 wasn't an exception.United has had the highest rate of pet deaths of any US airline for the past three years.In fairness, the airline in recent years has also been the largest transporter of animals -- mostly dogs and cats, but also more exotic pets such as birds and geckos. Also, according to the DOT report for 2017, several of the animals had pre-existing health issues such as heart disease. (The report did not specify how many animals were flown in the cargo hold as opposed to the plane's cabin.)But even when accounting for their larger volume of animal passengers, United still leads all other airlines in rate of deaths per 10,000 pets.United did not respond to multiple requests for comment for this story. But spokesman Charlie Hobart told CNN on Tuesday that the airline is investigating the French bulldog's death "to prevent this from ever happening again."As for the 2017 report, he said, "The overwhelming majority of the incidents were attributed to animals not being acclimated to its crate or the animal having a pre-existing condition we weren't aware of. For an outgoing, two-term Republican governor who only two years ago won the Ohio presidential primary, a final state GOP fundraiser should be almost a victory lap, a chance to reflect on the last eight years.But when the GOP faithful gather in Columbus on Friday, Gov. John Kasich won't be there.That is due in large part to the fact that the guest of honor will be the man who has emerged as Kasich's main political rival, President Donald Trump.Kasich was one of the few Republicans not to endorse Trump in 2016 general election and has remained one of his staunchest policy critics since Trump took office. Beyond that, control of the state party has shifted away from Kasich since Trump's victory with the replacement of party chair, Kasich ally Matt Borges, with Trump supporter Jane Timken.Just last week, Trump's Ohio Campaign Manager and now Co-chair of the RNC Bob Paduchik wrote a blistering op-ed critical of Kasich's attacks on Trump."President Trump is now coming into John Kasich's territory and ruining his farewell party," Political Analyst Dr. Tom Sutton of Baldwin Wallace University said,The Trump Ohio swing Sutton said is also evident on the party's fall ticket, noting that Trump ally Rep. Firefighters battling the Holy Fire in Southern California took care of a dehydrated fawn Monday afternoon. Officials with the Cleveland National Forest tweeted that the firefighters stumbled upon the fawn and discovered she was heat exhausted and dehydrated. The men can be seen in a photo giving the fawn a much-needed drink of water before helping get her back on her feet.  410

For the first time, a resident of "Sesame Street" is experiencing homelessness -- and the hope is that her story can help sweep the clouds away for the growing number of young children in the United States without homes to call their own.Lily, a 7-year-old bright pink Muppet, was introduced to the world in 2011. She was originally described as being food-insecure because her family lacked consistent access to food.Now, "Lily is the first Muppet we've created whose storyline includes that she is experiencing homelessness," said Sherrie Westin, president of global impact and philanthropy for Sesame Workshop, formerly Children's Television Workshop, which is the nonprofit behind "Sesame Street."In new online videos, stories and resources, Sesame Workshop has expanded Lily's storyline to include that her family has lost their home and now must stay with friends. This homelessness initiative launched Wednesday as part of Sesame Workshop's Sesame Street in Communities program."When Lily was first launched, she came out as part of the food insecurity initiative. So she's not brand new, but this seemed like a really perfect extension of her story, so that we could use her to help children identify with," Westin said.
