BRISTOL, Wis. -- For a fruit farmer who knew little about growing flowers, the pandemic was the perfect nudge to try something new. So, he plowed over his strawberry fields to plant a patch of sunshine and it’s grown beyond his wildest dreams.Scott Thompson’s family has been farming strawberries in Bristol, Wisconsin, for generations.“We've been around for a just about 100 years.”As the general manager of Thompson Strawberry Farms, he says they’ve adapted over time starting with apples and strawberries at first.“We've kind of morphed over the years where we have raspberries and pumpkins as well.”But this year, the pick-your-own farm traded the sweet fruits for something more picturesque.“This year is our first crack at pick your own sunflowers,” said Thompson.Even though Thompson knew very little about the bright yellow flower, he started out slow, until the pandemic hit and then had a thought.“This might be something that people might be really interested in. And so, I started planting. I did a small four-acre field then another four acres, then 10 acres. So, it just kind of grew, grew, grew.”He ended up planting not hundreds or thousands, but 2.2 million sunflower seeds across 22 acres of fields.“Having sunflowers is cool, but having a lot of sunflowers, that's really cool,” he said.For visitors like Sarah Akers and her 2-year-old son Xavier, it’s an eye-popping treat.“When they said how big it was, this is not what I was expecting,” said Akers. “It definitely is more impressive than what it sounds like when you just read about it.”It’s also a paradise for pollinators. Bees buzz from flower to flower. And with 15 fields, Thompson says it’s a great outing during the pandemic.“It's a perfectly natural social distancing activity,” said Thompson.The massive blooms have attracted visitors from all over the country. Debbie Berdinski, visiting from Alabama, was enthralled.“I love it. I think it's beautiful,” she said.And the decision to swap out strawberries for sunflowers has unexpectedly turned Thompson’s farm into his very own golden field of dreams.“You could really just go out and have a fun time and kind of forget about reality for a little bit,” he said. “Just enjoy being out here in this sea of yellow flowers.”And in a year like 2020, a little sunshine goes a long way. 2320

BOX ELDER COUNTY, Utah -- The Utah community is mourning the loss of one of its own, a U.S. Air Force pilot from the state who died during a routine training mission off the northern coast of England.1st Lt. Kenneth “Kage” Allen grew up in Box Elder County, but recently moved overseas where he was serving with the 48th Fighter Wing based in the U.K.He had been there for a little over three months when his plane crashed during the training mission.“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our airman and mourn with his family and his fellow reapers in the 493rd Fighter Squadron,” said Col. Will Marshall, Commander of the 48th Fighter Wing.Marshall said Allen was the assistant chief of weapons and tactics for the 493rd Fighter Squadron.On Monday morning, Allen was flying a F-15C Eagle at about 9:40 a.m. when the aircraft crashed into the North Sea.“The outpouring of love and respect from our communities has been a ray of light in this time of darkness,” said Marshall.Allen's death comes just one day after his 27th birthday, and just one week after he recorded himself singing “Time in a Bottle” for his new bride.“Oh my sweetheart Kage,” wrote Hannah Allen on Facebook. “I think I could fill an ocean with the tears I’ve cried today.”The couple were married on Feb. 20, right before Allen joined the 48th Fighter Wing.Family members wrote on Facebook that Lt. So, he came up with an innovative solution with a couple of pieces of wood and some imagination.With a miter saw, drill press and belt sander at the ready, Bob Pinta converted his home’s garage into a bustling workshop.The high school math and computer science teacher is solving an online teaching problem one contraption at a time.“I would be teaching, I could use my pen and share the screen, but no matter how good of a stylus you get, writing on the iPad is not the same as write it on paper,” said Pinta.Pinta found that his students could either see what he was writing or him, but not both. So, he designed a phone stand that could act as a virtual overhead projector.“I would join the zoom on my phone pointing the phone down at the table and I would have the students pin my hand so that it was the big one,” he explained.He says the height adjustable stand allows for a much more interactive lesson.“So, they would be able to follow along as I went, and they could see both my face and the paper as I zoom.”His wife posted a video to see if other teachers might be interested in one. It quickly racked up tens of thousands of views with orders pouring in from all over.“We have shipped across the United States.”Each weekend, they sit in the driveway for teachers wishing to pick one up in person.
