Sixteen US Marines were arrested Thursday for alleged involvement in various illegal activities ranging from human smuggling to drug-related offenses, according to a statement from the Marine Corps. The arrests took place in a dramatic fashion on Thursday morning at Camp Pendleton, California, during a battalion formation."Information gained from a previous human smuggling investigation precipitated the arrests," the statement said. "None of the Marines arrested or detained for questioning served in support of the Southwest Border Support mission."Eight other Marines were also questioned on their involvement in alleged drug offenses unrelated to today's arrests, the Marine Corps said. 704
Sen. Cory Booker, D-New Jersey, has endorsed former Vice President Joe Biden in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination.Booker made his announcement in a tweet early Monday morning."The answer to hatred & division is to reignite our spirit of common purpose. @JoeBiden won't only win - he'll show there's more that unites us than divides us. He'll restore honor to the Oval Office and tackle our most pressing challenges. That's why I'm proud to endorse Joe," Booker tweeted.Booker's endorsement is the latest boost in momentum for Biden's campaign, which has taken off since the former vice president's win in the South Carolina primary. Since that win, Biden racked up big wins in Super Tuesday primaries and picked up major endorsements from moderate candidates like Booker, Mike Bloomberg, Amy Klobuchar and Pete Buttigieg.Biden currently holds a slight delegate lead over Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont), with 664 delegates to Sanders' 573.Booker previously sought the Democratic presidential nomination and appeared in a number of debates, but dropped out prior to the Iowa caucuses. 1117
ST. LOUIS, Missouri — Planned Parenthood earlier this week sued the state of Missouri for threatening to pull its license to operate and conduct abortion procedures. If the clinic in St. Louis closes, Missouri would become the first state in the nation without an abortion clinic.“This is not a drill. This is not a warning,” said Dr. Leana Wen, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, in a news release. “This is a real public health crisis. This week, Missouri would be the first state in the country to go dark — without a health center that provides safe, legal abortion care.”Planned Parenthood said the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services is refusing to renew the clinic’s license, claiming it is non-compliant.Outside of the clinic Tuesday, pro-life supporters distributed information, much like any other day. But inside the clinic, Planned Parenthood officials were gearing up for another legal fight. "Always moving the goalpost on us, always reinterpreting certain regulations,” said Dr. Colleen McNicholas with Planned Parenthood. McNicholas is the only doctor in Missouri who performs abortion procedures. “One in four women will have an abortion in their life. That is a lot of people,” McNicholas said. “It is an incredibly common and safe procedure and one that in just a few minutes allows me to help people get to a better place.” On Friday, Republican Gov. TAMPA, Fla — Amy Bottomley was raised in the suburbs of Chicago by two parents who loved her very much — a little girl who grew up and moved with her husband and son to Tampa. She says there’s always been a piece of her heart missing — and on Thursday, in front of Gate C inside Tampa International Airport, she was ready to find that missing piece.Bottomley had spent months talking on the phone with her birth mother, Kathleen Buchanan. They had connected after Bottomley got the results of a DNA test."I am feeling a mix of emotions right now,” Bottomley said as she sat in the seat and waited for her birth mom’s plane to land. “It’s going to be interesting.”Her hands were shaking, her heart was racing. She got a text that her birth mom's plane had landed. She’s been waiting for this moment, "My whole life, my entire life, 42 years.” 852
