KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A family is shaken after a man attacked and tied them up inside their home so he could rob them.Jason Hance, 34, is charged with two counts of kidnapping, two counts of robbery, four counts of armed criminal action and a single count of burglary. The Shults family remains baffled over what Hance did to them Monday night.Police said the man from Russell, New York broke into the Shults's house through a basement window, went upstairs and right into Trina's path. "He grabbed my hand with a knife in it and told me to shut the f*** up and come with him," Trina Shults told Kansas City-based KSHB on Wednesday. She said Hance dragged her around the house while her husband, Eric, was walking the dog. "He put me in a chair and he put my own apron — a jean fabric apron — over my head and then tied my own hairdryer around my neck," Trina Shults said. When Eric walked in, he thought someone was playing a cruel joke.  "And then when I found he was serious I was like, 'What the heck?' So, of course, my wife says, 'Honey, do what he says, do what he says,'" Eric Shults said. He said Hance threw a blanket over his head and tied his legs to a chair using a mop cord, then went on to ransack their home. "Every cabinet, every door in my home for an hour and a half," Trina Shults said. They told KSHB the suspect said he was looking to sell their items to get money for a hotel room and for his 14-month-old daughter with a heart condition. As to why he chose their particular house?"He was walking up the street, we have a Ford Escape, and he says, 'I saw the Escape. I wanted to escape from my problems. There's the house I need to target,'" Eric Shults said. As Hance was loading up the stolen goods into the Escape he encountered the Shults's son and niece. "He's like, 'I have your parents tied up inside if you go now you can save them.' And I said, 'Are you serious?' And he pulls a hammer and he's like, 'Yes, I'm serious. Drop your phone,'" said Austin Shults, the victims' son.Police traced one of the victim's cell phones to a motel off of Highway 40. Officers found Hance and several of the stolen items inside one of the rooms. Since the incident, the Shults have installed an alarm system. "Why is it that someone off the street feels compelled to come in into our home and take things that don't belong to them? Get a job. Go earn your own things. You're not entitled to mine," Trina Shults said. The suspect, Jason Hance, made his first appearance in court Wednesday afternoon. His bond is set at 0,000. Hance's next court date is set for April 12 at 1:30 p.m. at the Criminal Justice Center. 2748

Jennifer Lawrence and Meryl Streep are not happy about Harvey Weinstein quoting them in an attempt to get a sexual misconduct lawsuit against him dismissed. On Tuesday, lawyers for the embattled former Hollywood mogul filed a motion in a New York federal court to dismiss a racketeering suit brought against Weinstein in December by six women. The group alleges sexual harassment and abuse by the producer, his former company Miramax and its former board members for what they say was organized criminal behavior over a period of years designed to cover up Weinstein's alleged actions.Weinstein has been accused by dozens of women of numerous incidents of alleged sexual misconduct over a period of three decades.Through his spokesperson, the media mogul has consistently denied any instances of "non-consensual" sexual activity. At the time the women's suit was filed, Miramax told CNN its current iteration has been independent of the Weinsteins for more than 10 years."Miramax joins the entire film community in condemning Harvey Weinstein and his unspeakable actions," a spokesperson said. "Miramax has been completely independent of Harvey - since he and Bob Weinstein left The Walt Disney Company to found The Weinstein Company. Twelve years and two ownership changes later, Miramax is a very different company. We at Miramax are proud of that difference."Harvey Weinstein's brother Bob Weinstein, along with current and former Weinstein Company board members Dirk Ziff, Tim Sarnoff, Marc Lasry, Tarak Ben Ammar, Lance Maerov, Richard Koenigsberg, Jeff Sackman, James Dolan and Paul Tudor Jones were also named in the suit.A spokesperson for Dolan said "Mr. Dolan is confident that he acted appropriately in all matters relating to his time on the Weinstein board."The others named in the suit either declined to respond to CNN, did not respond at the time of publication or could not be reached for comment.Harvey Weinstein's motion argues that the women have no standing for a class action suit because -- as drafted -- it "would include all women who ever met with Weinstein, regardless of whether they claimed to have suffered any identifiable harm as a result of that meeting.""Such women would include, presumably, Jennifer Lawrence, who told Oprah Winfrey she had known Weinstein since she was 20 years old and said 'he had only ever been nice to me,' and Meryl Streep, who stated publicly that Weinstein had always been respectful to her in their working relationship," the motion reads.Streep, who won a best actress Academy Award in 2012 for her portrayal as British stateswoman Margaret Thatcher in the Weinstein Company release "The Iron Lady," fired back in a statement to CNN."Harvey Weinstein's attorneys' use of my (true) statement- that he was not sexually transgressive or physically abusive in our business relationship- as evidence that he was not abusive with many OTHER women is pathetic and exploitive," she said. "The criminal actions he is accused of conducting on the bodies of these women are his responsibility, and if there is any justice left in the system he will pay for them- regardless of how many good movies, made by many good people, Harvey was lucky enough to have acquired or financed."Likewise Lawrence, who won an Oscar in 2013 for the Weinstein-produced "Silver Linings Playbook," took Weinstein to task."Harvey Weinstein and his company are continuing to do what they have always done which is to take things out of context and use them for their own benefit," Lawrence said in a statement provided to CNN Thursday. "This is what predators do, and it must stop."Lawrence also offered her support to Weinstein's alleged victims."For the record, while I was not victimized personally by Harvey Weinstein, I stand behind the women who have survived his terrible abuse and I applaud them in using all means necessary to bring him to justice whether through criminal or civil actions," she said. "Time's up."CNN has reached out to reps for Weinstein for comment.  4017

JUNO BEACH, Fla. — Plastic may be impacting sea turtles more than you might think.According to a new international study, plastic was found in the gut of every single sea turtle researchers examined, casting light on just how bad plastic pollution is in our oceans. The problem lies with microplastics, which from plastic that ends up in the ocean through pollution. It breaks down into tiny pieces due to the sun and other environmental factors and then gets eaten by sea turtles and other marine life that mistakes it for food. The new research was published in the journal Global Change Biology. It found plastic in more than 100 sea turtles across the world in the Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean and Mediterranean Sea.Click here to read the studySome of the objects researchers found in the turtles' guts included tire pieces, cigarettes and fishing line."Some of these chemicals are known to be endocrine disruptors, which means they mess up the hormones of the turtles," said Charles Manire, staff veterinarian at Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach, Florida. "They may affect the immune system, making them vulnerable to infections."In addition to treating sick and injured sea turtles, LMC also conducts research on the sea turtle population, including recent a collaboration with the University of Georgia to study plastic's impact on sea turtles. "We published a study recently where we examined 97 post hatchling and tiny juvenile turtles — we had plastic in all but one of those," Manire said.Click here to read the LMC/UGA studyThey've found the same problems locally, mainly in post-hatchling and juvenile turtles."That generation of turtles may not survive and that could have a major impact on the population if we don’t have turtles growing up to reach adulthood," Manire said. "Plastics have toxins in them. The chemicals that are used to makes the plastics are affecting the turtles in ways that are not very obvious to us."Manire explained that the area where the baby turtles live and grow lies within the seaweed patch offshore and, unfortunately, that's where the problem exists."It’s also where trash accumulates, in the same area," he said. "Especially with the very tiny bits of plastic, these little turtles are eating it because it looks like food to them."The new study by Global Change Biology also estimates between 4.8 million and 12.7 million tons of plastic waste could be entering oceans every year."It’s not affecting just the turtles. It’s affecting a lot of them out there," he said. "But the turtles are the sentinel that tells us something is wrong and the little turtles are definitely telling us something is wrong."If you want to help lessen the impact of plastic on marine life, Manire said, you can start by picking up any trash you see on the beach."We're trying to educate the public, trying to educate the world, telling the story so that people realize just how bad the situation is," he said. "So much plastic is ending up into the ocean, not necessarily people intentionally dumping, but plastic that blows off land or washes off land during storms."You can also recycle and reduce the amount of plastic you use such as plastic straws, cutlery and cups and substitute reusable items instead. 3329
