SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The region's high housing prices can be daunting, but there is a way to get the best bang for your buck when it comes to homebuying.San Diego realtor Mark Powell says the way to do that is by viewing properties by price per square foot. That way, even if the overall price is high, your dollars buy more house if the price per square foot is low. "First decide what location you want, and then go for the biggest bang for the buck there," Powell said. Powell said the price per square foot in San Diego ranges from 9 to more than ,000. Powell said while its price per square foot was higher than the other two, he noted its overall price tag was within reach for some single earners."The downside is there is limited parking," he said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The statistics for foster kids aging out of the system are grim. According to the National Foster Youth Institute, after reaching the age of 18, 20 percent of the children who were in foster care will become instantly homeless. And there's a less than a 3 percent chance for children who have aged out of foster care to earn a college degree at any point in their life.San Diego nonprofit Just in Time for Foster Youth (JIT) is doing its part to prevent young people here from becoming a statistic. "When you turn 18 a lot of times the foster parents say here is a few dollars and you're on your own, there's no one to help you out," said Ivan Chavez, who was in the foster system from age 7 to 17.Growing up, he didn't have many positive role models. "For me, I never went to high school, and I barely went to middle school."But his journey brought him to JIT, where he now works as a full-time employee. JIT's My First Home (MFH) program helps former foster youth furnish and move into their new living space, creating a foundation for stable housing.Once every month, youth participants involved in the program have the chance to shop at the MFH Distribution Center, providing participants housing essentials for free, such as furniture, electronics, linens, and appliances. "They come in through the front door they're like you have all this stuff, and it's for me? They feel special, you know?" said Chavez.Chavez went from once living on the streets to now pursuing a master's degree. "If I saw my 15-year-old self, I would say everything is going to be ok. You're going to grow up, and you're going to do good and hopefully change people's lives," said Chavez. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Rancho Bernardo area could be getting its first legal marijuana dispensary.Will Senn, the President and Founder of URBN Leaf, has plans to open a dispensary in a strip mall at 16375 Bernardo Center Drive, just east of the 15 Freeway.A Conditional Use Permit filed with the city says it will be a 6,647 square foot business, the first of its kind in City Council District 5."There's a big demand, for sure," says Senn. His company owns two other URBN Leaf stores in San Diego County. He says people from the Rancho Bernardo area drive to his other locations frequently. He also says they receive delivery requests to the neighborhood. "We're excited about the opportunity, we think the community does need it," says Senn.Community members disagree. They say it's the wrong place for a dispensary.City law allows just four dispensaries per City Council District. Right now there are none in District 5, which includes Rancho Bernardo, Scripps Ranch, Carmel Mountain, Rancho Penasquitos, Torrey Highlands and San Pasqual.There are already 23 other marijuana dispensaries operating throughout San Diego.Senn's permit application is the only one on file with the city for District 5.The city's rules governing the placement of dispensaries say they must be at least, "1,000 feet from resource and population-based city parks, churches, child care centers, playgrounds, libraries owned and operated by the City of San Diego, minor-oriented facilities, residential care facilities, and schools."Opponents say the new dispensary would be within 1,000 feet of the Hope United Lutheran Church on Bernardo Center Drive. They also say two other storefronts within the strip mall qualify as "minor-oriented facilities," the Kumon Math and Reading Center, and the Little Artists studio.Senn says that's not the case."We're 1,000 feet away from the church," he says. "And there is some language in other projects that have been approved by the planning commission that is consistent with our project."Opponents will have their chance to voice their concerns Tuesday night at the Rancho Bernardo Development Review Committee Meeting. It will be held at 6 pm at the Rancho Bernardo Library on 17110 Bernardo Center Drive.Senn says he plans to listen to all of the comments and take the community's concerns to heart. But, he adds that his company's track record of running other dispensaries makes them good partners who know how to operate legally."We like to tread lightly and be delicate when we enter a new market," says Senn. "But we do have experience. We've been doing this for a long time. And there's no better company prepared to enter a market like Rancho Bernardo than Urbn Leaf." 2706
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The U.S. Attorney's Office of Southern California announced charges Friday against a man in the death of a Camp Pendleton Marine who had an overdose in his barracks.The unidentified Corporal was found unresponsive on the floor near his computer chair on January 29, 2017. He was wearing headphones and appeared to have been playing video games, investigators said.An autopsy determined the Marine died of fentanyl toxicity. A pill found on the headboard near a powdery substance and a rolled-up dollar bill tested positive for fentanyl.A complaint unsealed Friday detailed drug charges against 25-year-old Kyle Shephard of San Marcos.Investigators said Shephard met the victim in November 2016 and sold him fentanyl and other drugs multiple times over three months.Shepard acknowledged the pills could lead to an overdose, according to the complaint.In December, Shephard was arrested and charged with possessing for distribution roughly 2,000 fentanyl pills.“What a senseless tragedy that another young life has been lost because of fentanyl,” said U.S. Attorney Adam Braverman. “This Marine was serving his country and had his whole life ahead of him. We are going to hold dealers accountable for the deaths that result from their reckless disregard for human life.”Shephard will be in court March 6 for a detention hearing. 1369
