SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A rash of mail tampering incidents has led to missing money and an unusual M.O.On Winnebago Avenue in late June, Kelly Craig was standing in front of her home talking to a neighbor."Around 10:30 a.m., the mail carrier dropped off the mail in front of me," said Craig.A few minutes later, Craig got her mail and noticed something. One of her envelopes was sliced open on the side. "Looks like a razor blade slit the side," said Craig.Inside, she found a birthday card from her mother, mailed from Montana. The usual money was not there. A call to mom revealed 0 in cash should have been inside."Felt panicked and really sad the money was missing, and my mom was really upset," said Craig.Craig wasn't alone. That same day, less than two miles away, her daughter-in-law went to get her mail."She got a wedding card from my sister, and it had cash in it as well," said Craig.The 0 that was inside was gone. That envelope was also sliced open on the left side, but there was one difference. The side and back of the enveloped were resealed with tape."Clearly trying to cover up their stealing of the money," said Craig.When Craig and her daughter-in-law reported it to postal authorities, they say they were told of similar recent incidents, including one if the College Area. On the Nextdoor app , several neighbors also reporting similar incidents. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Point Loma family is trying to raise awareness of what they call a “dangerous” intersection, after cars have slammed into their house.The home the Cohen family began renting this year sits at the intersection of Nimitz Blvd. and Evergreen St., and has been hit twice since they moved in.According to San Diego Police, officers have responded to collisions at that intersection at least twelve times in the last five years.“I went to go wake up my mom and told her that we should probably get out of here because there's a car going into our kitchen,” said 12-year-old Max Cohen, speaking about a crash that happened the week the family moved in back in January. “You look out the window and see cars speeding down the road and not stopping at all on this turn.”Before they started renting, the Cohen’s weren’t notified that the home had a certain reputation for being hit. 10News reached out to the homeowner, who says that information was also not disclosed to him before he purchased the house this year. The City of San Diego tells 10News it is aware of the history of the intersection. Over the years, many cars have slammed into the house on Nimitz Blvd, sometimes resulting in serious injuries to the occupants in the home.A City spokesperson said upgrades to improve safety have been made, based on studies and evaluations by the City’s traffic engineering division.The following statement from the City of San Diego outlines the safety upgrades:“In the recent history, the City has evaluated the area and updated the intersection to include guardrails, a flashing beacon with a “curve” warning sign and a dedicated bike lane. The approaching lanes have been reduced from to one lane from two lanes and the signal at the approaching intersection has been modified to remain red between midnight and 4 a.m. to direct vehicles to stop before the intersection –- In other words the light remains red during the hours of 12 a.m. to 4 a.m. until a vehicle is detected.”But, the Cohen family said these changes are clearly not working.“It might not hit the house as much as it could, but it still does, which it shouldn’t at all,” said McKensey Cohen, whose bedroom was hit by a car in October. “Since then we've just been on edge about everything. We can hear the street for miles.”The family said they have contacted the City’s code enforcement department to come check the stability of the home, specifically McKensey’s bedroom, but they have not received a visit.The family hoped to move out the day of the last crash, but they had to postpone the move. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Montgomery High School student wearing a gorilla costume was hospitalized on Halloween after being hit by a golf cart in Otay Mesa West. According to San Diego Police, the student reportedly cracked an egg on the assistant principal's head before running across the street to a nearby park. Police say staff members at the school chased the student in a golf cart. During the chase, police say there was some sort of fight between the staff members and student before there was “some type of contact” between the student and golf cart. The student was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new court program in San Diego Juvenile Hall will help victims of sex trafficking find their way out of forced slavery.The RISE Court (Resiliency is Strength, Empowerment) will work with as many as 40 kids who have been victims in sex trafficking, giving them help to put their lives back together."We don't view them as an object to be used and abused," says District Attorney Summer Stephan. "We see them as whole human beings who need to be free to thrive in society."Many of the kids come to the court because they commit other crimes as part of their role in the sex trade. After they go through the criminal system, they fall right back into human trafficking because they have nowhere else to go. Sometimes, it's their pimp who is waiting to pick them up outside of Juvenile Hall .The court will work to find the underlying cause that drove the kids into human trafficking in the first place, and help them break the cycle."Some of them don't recognize themselves as victims or they don't see it as a problem or they don't think it's a big deal that they're involved in certain activities because they think it's normal," says Judge Carolyn Caietti, who will oversee the courtroom.Human sex trafficking is San Diego's 2nd largest underground economy, behind drug sales.
