Sam Nunberg's interview tour is over for now.Nunberg was booked to appear on CNN's "New Day" on Tuesday morning, but he did not show up for the interview.When an unknown person answered the phone at his home Tuesday morning, the person said Nunberg is done doing interviews.According to two sources with knowledge of the matter, ABC also pursued Nunberg for Tuesday's "Good Morning America." But the producers feared that he would bail, and sure enough, he stopped responding to messages on Tuesday morning. "He went dark," one of the sources said. Nunberg's change in media strategy appears related to the change of heart that unfolded before a national audience during his media tour on Monday.The former Donald Trump campaign aide gave more than a dozen interviews on Monday in an extraordinary act of defiance of special counsel Robert Mueller.Related: Who is Sam Nunberg?He started out by flaunting Mueller's subpoena and saying "let him arrest me." At one point, he even handed the subpoena paper to MSNBC anchor Ari Melber. He seemed to revel in the show he was starring in."Jake, I'm definitely the first person to ever do this, right?" he asked CNN's Jake Tapper.Interviewer after interviewer emphasized that Nunberg could be facing serious legal jeopardy. They asked if he wanted to reconsider his position; asked if he'd consulted his lawyer; and asked about his family.Nunberg asked questions too -- almost as if he was seeking legal advice. In the 7 p.m. hour on Monday, he asked CNN's Erin Burnett, "Do you think Robert Mueller is going to send me to prison, Erin, for this?" She answered, "I don't know, but he certainly would be within his rights."Some of Nunberg's associates said they were worried about his state of mind. Burnett said at the end of the interview that she smelled alcohol on his breath. But he denied that he had been drinking.Paparazzi-style photographers were waiting for Nunberg outside CNN's New York bureau. He spoke with one of the camera crews and then continued talking with reporters by phone. But his tone changed. By the end of the day, Nunberg signaled that he will continue cooperating with Mueller, after all.The special counsel office had no comment.Nunberg's last interview of the day appeared to be with Olivia Nuzzi of New York magazine. He told her around midnight that "I'm gonna cooperate!"Regarding his TV tour, he said to Nuzzi, "Did I sound drunk? I think that I was just more of myself in these interviews than I've ever been. SAN DIEGO — Small business owners across San Diego County are about to put in for their share of a 5 billion pot of forgivable federal loans.That’s because a new round of Paycheck Protection Program loans is part of the new stimulus package, to help small businesses make it through the pandemic.“Obviously, we have major restrictions on us and visits are down probably more than ever right now,” said Cat Kom, owner of Studio Sweat in Rancho Bernardo.Even moving the exercise bikes outside was a struggle for the gym. Kom got stuck in the elevator for more than an hour before fire rescue crews got her out.But she finally sees some help on the way - in the new stimulus package.“As long as they do their best and it's moral and the funding goes to the small businesses that really need it, and loopholes aren’t exploited, then that's the best that we can hope for,” she said.The first round did not go smoothly. In fact, major corporations like Shake Shack got the maximum million, and paid it back after public outcry,.This time, however, there are protections against that.Eligibility is limited to companies with up to 300 employees, down from 500 in the first round. Loans are capped at million, down from million, and companies must show revenue down 25 percent in at least one quarter - compared to the same quarter a year earlier.“Congress doesn't want a P.R. nightmare and I think they want to try to help the people that need it but not dump taxpayers money into big business that's doing just fine,” said Kelly DuFord Williams, managing partner at Slate Law Group.Small businesses have been waiting for that help for months.Once the stimulus package becomes law, small businesses can apply for the loans through their banks. 1758
SAN DIEGO - A landlord in the College Area near San Diego State says the homeless problem is getting worse, and it's keeping people from renting in the neighborhood.Suhail Khalifeh owns six homes near El Cajon Boulevard and Montezuma Road. He says one of them has sat empty for six months because renters are worried about the sight of homeless people in the area."When people come and see the scenes of homeless all around and smell the urine in the atmosphere, they leave and never come back," says Khalifeh.Khalifeh says he finds trash, drugs and feces in the bushes near his properties.The neighborhood has dealt with the problem for months. Last July, neighbors complained that a nearby vacant lot was becoming a camping ground for homeless people. The owners of the lot increased security and cleaned the lot out.RELATED: Neighbors fed up with homeless trash on undeveloped lotKhalifeh says that didn't solve the problem; it just moved the homeless closer to the homes."One of my tenants has seven children. She has to give them rides to the library next door," he says. "It's 50 feet away, and she doesn't feel safe for her kids to walk to the library."Khalifeh showed surveillance video to 10News of a homeless man threatening one of his neighbors. He also has video of people meeting in the middle of the night for what he thinks are drug deals.A search of the website crimemapping.com shows 46 criminal reports filed in the area within the last month.Khalifeh says the police do an excellent job at responding, but they can only offer short-term solutions. He wants the city to do more to address the bigger issue."They live in the street," he says. "In the daytime, they're in the street, and at night they go to the parking lot of the library." 1764
SALTON SEA, Calif. (KGTV) - Four years ago a 10News crew traveled to Bombay Beach on the eastern side of the Salton Sea. This once thriving resort community is littered with abandoned homes and some of the 200 plus residents who still live there struggle to get out. People like the man who would only identify himself as “Bucky.”"We own two houses. We can't replace what we have into them,” says Bucky. “Basically we're stuck. Me and my wife talked about it a couple of weeks ago I said, 'You know we're gonna die here.'"Bucky is like so many who call the Salton Sea home. They feel forgotten, hopeless, and helpless. In 2003 California Legislators promised to restore the dying sea and its vital ecosystem with almost -billion. But that promise, like so many others since, was broken to the people who live here.But two years ago Governor Jerry Brown allocated a mere -million in an attempt to avoid an enormous environmental disaster. That may seem like a lot of money, but as Senator Ben Hueso, whose district encompasses the Salton Sea explains, “-million is a drop in the bucket” for a problem of this size. So, four years later our 10News crew decided to return to the Salton Sea to see how residents who live there are managing their lives and what that -million is being used for. We were surprised to find not much has changed. In fact, very little money has been spent, the situation is rapidly getting worse, and the people who live there fear more broken promises.There is no denying the Salton Sea is disappearing."This is the water line previously,” says Tony May who owns several houses near the shoreline in Salton City.May points to the back edge of his yard and down to a dusty beach below where water from the Salton Sea used to lap up on his property.“It was right here as of 1993,” explains May smiling remembering a time when the property was right on the water.Today the water line is no less than 300 yards away and separated by a dusty playa scattered with dead fish and a foul-smelling body of water that once was a prime resort for fishing and waterskiing. And, it's only getting worse. The sea is shrinking more rapidly now that flows from the Colorado River were officially cut off at the beginning of 2018. Within years thousands of acres of seabed, like that behind Tony May’s home will be exposed. The waterfront property is now only a dream to May, the boat docks are entirely useless, and 300 yards of seabed that used to be 10 feet underwater, are now just a dusty beach. Playa that according to the Salton Sea Authority contains toxic chemicals like selenium, arsenic, and DDT. Tony and many others who live and work here, claim the dust from that dry beach is what's causing their respiratory issues."They can't breathe anymore, they're getting asthma,” says May. “They never had asthma. I talk to the employees in town and they say the more that sea dries out the more it effects our health."The Salton Sea will never return to its riviera prime. The concern now is not so much saving the sea, but instead averting disaster by creating wetlands to control the dust storms.“Because it's a major problem. It's a very big problem," says Senator Ben Hueso from California’s 40th District and home to the Salton Sea.Senator Hueso has been fighting an uphill battle for this region for almost a decade."What is going to happen should this sea begin to dry up? We're going to see that exacerbate," says Hueso. "Right now Imperial County has cities with the poorest air quality in the country. Highest asthma rates in the country. The price tag of doing nothing to fix the Salton Sea is going to be costlier than actually putting some resource into fixing it."The price tag has always been a problem for the Salton Sea dating back 15 years. State officials promised to restore the Sea in 2003 with .9-billion. That promise, like many others for this region, was broken.In 2016 a mere million was allotted by Governor Brown in his budget, with promises of millions more to come. -million of that money would go towards staff and consultants to fix the Salton Sea. The remaining -million would go to actual construction. But two years later only million has been spent on staff and consultants according to Bruce Wilcox who is Assistant Secretary and an Ecologist with the Salton Sea Policy. Not a dime has been spent on construction of wetlands to mitigate the blowing dust. "This is the old marina. And probably this is one of the most visually enticing places to see how far the water has receded," says Frank Ruiz with Audobon California looking over a desolate landscape that was once the thriving Salton City Marina.Ruiz’ job is to monitor the migratory birds who travel through the Salton Sea along the Pacific Flyway which stretches from Alaska to Patagonia at the southernmost tip of South America, shared by Argentina and Chile. "We should not wait until the crisis is on top of us. Because then the cost of inaction will be way too high,” adds Ruiz.A study conducted by the Pacific Institute estimates the cost of doing nothing with the Salton Sea could reach as little as -billion if nothing is done and possibly as much as -billion. Ruiz has watched the sea recede for years and says he fears the growth of respiratory issues, not just for those who live in this region but eventually as far away as San Diego. He's also witnessed a massive decline of migratory birds, which play a huge role in the ecology of the region."I think birds and wildlife are good indicators of how good or how bad your environment is. If the birds go, if the wildlife go, we will go next."If that’s true, as Senator Hueso mentioned, that -million absolutely will be a drop in the bucket. 5836
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KGTV) – The new year is right around the corner and with it comes a list of new laws going into effect on the roads. Some of the new California laws include gender identity on drivers licenses, new fees related to smog checks and rule changes for motorized scooters. The new laws take effect on January 1, 2019. Check out the list below for the new laws going into effect in 2019: Gender identity laws – The law allows people applying for a California drivers license or ID card to self-certify their chosen gender category of male, female or non-binary. Applicants who choose non-binary will receive an X in the gender category. Motorized Scooters – This law no longer requires helmets for riders who are at least 18-years-old on motorized scooters. It also prohibits people from operating the scooters on a highway with a speed limit over 25 miles per hour unless within a class IV or class II bikeway. Smog check changes and new abatement fees - The law expands smog check exemptions to vehicles that are up to eight model years old. During the additional two years, the vehicles will pay an annual smog abatement fee. Temporary license plate program – The law requires dealers to attach a temporary paper license plate on a vehicle at the time of sale unless the vehicle has a previously-issued license plate. The intent of the new law is to reduce the number of toll violations. Driving under the influence, ignition interlock device – From January 1, 2019 through January 1, 2026, the law mandates that repeat offenders for DUI and first DUI offenders whose violations result in injury to install an ignition interlock device for a period ranging between 12 and 48 months. Driving privilege for minors – The law repeals a juvenile court’s authority to suspend, restrict or delay the issuance of a drivers license of a habitual truant or ward of the state for up to one year. The law clarifies that any suspensions or delays reported prior to January 1, 2019, remain in effect.Unsafe, unsecured loads on vehicles – The law requires the DMV to include at least one question addressing laws on driving with an unsafe, unsecured load in at least 20 percent of the knowledge tests. The DMV is also reminding drivers of low-emission an transitional zero-emission vehicles that their green or white decals granting them access to HOV lanes expires January 1, 2019. Vehicles issued a green or white decal between January 1, 2017 and March 1, 2018 are eligible to apply for a red decal that grants them access to HOV lanes through January 1, 2022. The DMV plans to issue light purple decals in 2019 that will grant access to HOV lanes through January 1, 2023. Those eligible include drivers who haven’t applied for or received a consumer rebate pursuant to the Clean Vehicle Rebate Project, unless they meet annual income requirements. 2865
