SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Three San Diego County high school football teams qualified for the state finals but may not have enough funding to attend the tournament, school officials said Monday.Lincoln High School boys just finished what coach David Dunn is calling a “Cinderella season”. The team has never before qualified for the event.“Just to have the experience and the opportunity to do it, and let alone be the first team to do it, it means a lot,” said T'ray Kirkland, senior player.The Lincoln High Hornets have had a slim roster, injuries, even a forfeited game. They beat Mira Mesa for the CIF championship.“There have been games where we really had to step up. You just see how much heart each and every person on this team has,” said Kirkland.“Their willingness to compete is different than a lot of the other teams that I've had before," Coach Dunn said.The boys have also been competitive academically. The team averages a 3.1 grade point average with as many as eight players holding a 4.0. Lincoln High is scheduled to play Menlo Atherton this weekend in the San Francisco suburb of Redwood City. The game won’t happen if the team doesn’t get more money. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The remains of a Kansas Marine who fought in World War II have been identified.U.S. Marines Corps Reserve Pfc. Raymond Warren was killed in 1943 during the Battle of Tarawa, according to the Associated Press. After his burial site was discovered in 2015, his nephew, Warren Cooper, of San Diego, and niece submitted mouth swaps for DNA testing, The Wichita Eagle reported.This month, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency announced Warren's remains were identified in part through DNA analysis.RELATED: Veterans honor 75th anniversary of Battle of Iwo JimaWarren was awarded the Silver Star after his death and is eligible to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.“We figured that enormity of the sacrifice and the great honor it is to be buried at Arlington tipped that in the (direction) of him being buried there,” Cooper told the AP.According to the agency, Warren was part of Company K, 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force, where they faced Japanese troops on the island of Betio in the Gilbert Islands region. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego History Center is commemorating a landmark moment in the gay rights movement: the Stonewall uprising in New York. Fifty years ago, a police raid on the Stonewall Inn in New York’s Greenwich Village sparked a violent confrontation between law enforcement and gay rights activists. Although the riots happened on the other side of the country, the West Coast had a role in fighting for change. “If nothing else, it is a marker in historical time with a clearly defined before and after,” said Dr. Lillian Faderman. Faderman said Stonewall was “not the first time that gay people fought back.” She curated an exhibit called LGBTQ San Diego: Stories and Struggles, tracing the local groups that advocated for LGBTQ rights. The Mattachine Society and Daughters of Bilitis both advocated for gay rights in the 1950s and 60s. Faderman’s exhibit highlights their work, and that of individuals who called for change. The exhibit will be open at the San Diego History Center until next year. 1022
