They helplessly watched their daughter, Erika, fight it for years.“It would have to be in all caps: helpless. As a father, I was supposed to be able to fix things. I couldn't fix it,” Ron Byrd says.After becoming partner at her law firm, doctors diagnosed Erika with breast cancer. Her parents say she became depressed, and it made her drinking worse.Rehab didn’t work.“Despite our best effort, her friends’ best efforts, her best efforts, it was to no avail,” says Ron. “And it killed her.”Erika died in 2011 at the age of 42.Her death is part of a disturbing, growing trend.“I just know it's a terrible epidemic,” Ron says. “Alcohol kills you in many ways: suicides, accidents, organ failures, disease.”The study by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation found this spike started during the recession and that growing pressure on working mothers might also play a role.“They are, I think, by in large, ashamed of it. A man wearing what police called a "Halloween costume" with live ammo draped across his chest was detained on the UCF campus on Tuesday. UCF Police responded to a classroom for reports of a suspicious person. When they arrived, they found the man wearing a Halloween costume that included real live ammunition. The man was detained, interviewed and let go after police determined he was just wearing a costume and there was no criminal intent behind his costume.Police say he told them he was dressed as "the Terminator" and he was very forthcoming with the situation, answering all questions asked. During a press conference on Tuesday, police said they only received one call from a third-party about the man wearing the live rounds and that was very alarming to them. They want everyone to say something when they see something questionable. "We were surprised by only one call," said officials. "It may be a costume, it may be more than a costume, but it's our job as a police department to keep this campus safe." 1036

A suspicious package targeting billionaire investor and philanthropist George Soros was rendered safe in Bedford, New York on Monday, a law enforcement source told CNN.The Bedford Police say they received a call reporting a suspicious package found in a mailbox. The package appeared to be an explosive device, police said.An employee had opened the parcel. The employee placed the package in a wooded area and called the Bedford Police, according to a news release.The package did not detonate on its own, the law enforcement source said. 547

A Marine lance corporal who marched at a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia last year has been kicked out of the service after he spent nearly a month jail.According to the Jacksonville Daily News in Jacksonville, North Carolina, Vasillios Pistolis, 19, was discharged from duty and kicked out of the Marine Corps on July 11. Pistolis was court-martialed on June 18 for an investigation into violations of Articles 92 and 107 of the Uniform of Military Justice.Among the violations covered in those articles are making "false statements," "failure to obey orders or regulations" and "dereliction of duty."Pistolis was sentenced to 28 days in confinement in the brig, a forfeiture of some of his paycheck and a reduction of rank.ProPublica and Frontline reported in June that Pistolis marched at the "Unite The Right" rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. A New Jersey meat processing company has recalled nearly 43,000 pounds of ground beef, including packages sold at Walmart stores around the country, due to possible E. coli contamination.The United States Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service announced Saturday that Lakeside Refrigerated Services, a Swedesboro, New Jersey company, is recalling ground beef packages that were produced on June 1.The affected products were sold under the Thomas Foods International and Marketside Butcher labels and feature the establishment number EST. 46841.The recall notice said items were shipped to retail locations nationwide. Marketside Butcher products are sold at Walmart, according to package labels of the recalled products.The FSIS categorized the situation as a Class I recall, which it defines as "a health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death."The recall notice said the ground beef could be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, which can cause dehydration, bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramps for 2–8 days, with an average of 3-4 days.
