SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In a move to help shed the mounting costs of a real estate deal gone wrong, the City of San Diego says it is stopping lease payments on the sharply criticized 101 Ash Street building.The city sent a letter to Cisterra Development, which brokered the real estate deal, that it will be "suspending further lease payments for the 1010 Ash Street building," starting with the Sept. 1 payment. The letter adds that the city will not be making any lease payments "until these issues are fairly resolved.""The City has lost use of the building due, in part, to direct physical loss and damage to the premises, including widespread and negligent disturbance of asbestos," the city's letter reads.RELATED: Options and possible consultation costs for vacant buildingThe property at 101 Ash St. has sat vacant in downtown San Diego for most of the last four years. As it remains empty and unused, taxpayers are paying a daily bill to the tune of ,000.The city intended to move 1,100 city employees into the building, but officials soon discovered problem after problem to the site's 19 floors. It appears you have documents that are not final and should not be treated as such."In August, City Council leaders voted 5-4 to request monthly updates on the status of the building and costs for several next steps options by Mayor Kevin Faulconer's office, including putting millions of dollars more into the building for the needed repairs, buying out the lease, pursuing a new landlord, trying to renegotiate its lease, or walking away entirely. The pandemic nearly derailed a local museum’s yearly family event.“This year is the 75th year of the creation of the book series, called ‘The Railway series,’ where Thomas was born,” said Katy Titus with the San Diego Model Railroad Museum.The Balboa Park museum hosts a Thomas Day Celebration every year. Thousands of kids, families, and train lovers stop at “Big Station” for the big event. Unfortunately, this year will be different.“Instead of Thomas taking over the physical museum, Thomas is going to take over our web presence,” says Titus.Thomas Takeover Week will run until Sunday. It’s a free virtual event.Visitors can explore the virtual exhibit. There are activities online for kids like arts and crafts. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Many Asian American business owners continue to struggle during the pandemic, but a North County teen is hoping to help by creating a website to support local restaurants."I was hearing a lot of stories about Asians in my community experiencing discrimination during the pandemic," said 17-year-old Kaia Culotta.The teen said coming from a family of small business owners, she wanted to do something to help."I realized that there wasn't an easily accessible, comprehensible list of Asian owned businesses in my community," said Culotta. "So, I saw a need for that."For weeks, Culotta learned how to code through free programs online to build a website. The "Help Asian Owned Businesses" site has an extensive list of restaurants located around the county.Culotta said her project sparked the interest of San Diego City Councilmember Chris Cate. He even shared a video promoting the site on social media."It is awesome. It's such a neat thing to be doing out of the goodness of her heart," said Joe Kao, owner of R3fresh Juice Bar.After seeing Cate's video, the small business owner reached out to the teen to thank her for putting the site together.Kao said his business, like many others, had fewer customers during the pandemic. "We definitely saw a drop in business, but we've stayed open," he said.Kao applauds Culotta's work and thanks her for thinking of the county's small Asian business owners. 1430

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Just days after her 97th birthday, a San Diego woman was honored for being a trailblazer in the Marine Corps. Sgt. Maj. Grace Carle's love for her country is apparent in her impressive resume. The retired Marine served during WWII, the Korean War, and Vietnam."She's always been a strong woman. She did what she was told to do, and she did it with honor. She wanted to be proud of what she did," said Jennie Larsen, Carle's niece. Carle was one of nine siblings and joined the Marine Corps when she was 20. She's now the last living Sergeant Major of the U.S. Marine Corps Women's Reserve and was one of only six women to hold the position. "When she went in she worked hard to get all of her advancements, and it's things like giving the women a chance to do jobs that the men had been doing and showing that the women were capable of holding these same positions and doing the same type of work," said Larsen.Carle was recently admitted to Somerset Subacute and Care, where social worker Lisa Abbott met the retired Marine. "When they told me she was a big deal in the Marines, I started googling her!" Abbott said.Carle will soon be entering hospice care, so Abbott decided they needed to honor her. "Somebody like Ms. Carle who's done so much for our country, and for America, and for women in general, this is going to be probably our last chance to thank her and honor her. While she's with us, we're going to take that opportunity," said Abbott. They held a ceremony for Carle at the facility, which included taps by Bugles Across America."The Marine life was her life, and she was very proud to serve this country, you couldn't have asked for a better person," said Larsen.Larsen says her aunt served in the Marine Corps for over 30 years.
