SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local World War II veteran who survived a battle with COVID-19 has died.In May, ABC 10News was there when loved ones, including daughter Lisa Hoover, welcomed home Ben Pack after a month in the ICU fighting COVID-19. He was among the oldest known survivors of the virus."It was one of the most emotional moments of my life," said Hoover.RELATED: 94-year-old El Cajon veteran who beat cancer, heart failure overcomes COVID-19At the age of 94, Pack had lived through a lifetime of survival stories. The World War II veteran survived tuberculosis, cancer, and congestive heart failure, but when he contracted COVID-19, his family prepared for the worst."There were days we thought it was over. We literally had our goodbye calls, and it was heartbreaking. What got him through this was his will to live and a fighting spirit, I guess," said Hoover.Even with that spirit, his battle with coronavirus took a toll. He lost 35 pounds and remained weak. In mid-October, while in his independent living apartment in Rancho San Diego, he fell and broke his hip. Surgery followed. He was 95, and he passed away on November 11, which was Veterans Day," said Hoover.Hoover says the timing of her father's death gave her family some solace."All felt it was a monumental day for him to pass. He felt so strong about serving. He lived a long, vibrant life. We are saddened about his loss, but good about the timing of it," said Hoover.Pack will be buried at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, his family is asking for donations to the Wounded Warrior Project. 1777

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A mom shopping with her one-year-son leapt into action when she found a car burglar inside her SUV in University City.On Wednesday morning at the Vons on Governor Drive, Gloria spent about 15 minutes shopping inside. Her son was sitting in the cart. As soon as she pushed the loaded cart out of the store, her eyes zeroed in on her SUV, parked close to the store."I was kind of in disbelief. Someone was in the car and the passenger door was wide open," said Gloria.Gloria saw a man rummaging through her center console and started screaming. She pushed every button on her key fob."The panic alarm actually went off. Scared the living daylights out of him, and he took off running," said Gloria. Moments after, she found her phone in her purse and starting recording. Surveillance video shows her take off in his direction. Holding tightly to her son, she continued to scream. Still pushing the cart, she followed him. "Definitely adrenaline and pure anger," said Gloria.Gloria has been a victim of three car burglaries in the past five years."I'm going to get you this time. You're not going to do this to anybody else," Gloria kept thinking. Less than a minute later, she followed him across the parking lot to a U-Haul truck before he drove off. She got a photo of him and the license plate. Possibly realizing Gloria got video, the guy ditched the truck, which was recovered hours later. She says police told her it was loaded with stuff: some of her belongings and other items, likely stolen. Police say the license plate led them to a local address, but the man wasn't there. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego International Airport spokesperson said Wednesday a reported paging that went viral was made by mistake.Video on Twitter claimed to show San Diego Airport's messaging system announce a page for "Epstein Coverup" on a digital display. The text read: "Airport is paging Epstein Coverup please meet your party at terminal two east by American Airlines."An airport spokesperson told 10News that the message was a mistake, and steps were "being taken to avoid such mistakes in the future."RELATED: Travel website ranks San Diego International as best airport in the US"San Diego International Airport’s paging system is a vital communications resource for airport users in a sometimes busy, hectic environment. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man was hospitalized after being hit by a car near Liberty Station Tuesday night. According to San Diego Police, the crash happened near Rosecrans Street and Laning Road around 5:17 p.m. Police say the victim, only described as a man in his 60s, was crossing the street in a designated crosswalk when the driver of a car turned left and hit the man. The victim was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. According to police, the driver stayed on scene and is cooperating. 517

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A non-profit that drives sick kids and their families to the hospital is celebrating one million miles.Climbing into an Emilio Nares Foundation car, mom Latoya Johnson and her 19-year-old daughter Tay Tay started recalling the memories over the last decade. They were one of ENF's first rides. The non-profit was founded in 2003 and began giving rides in August 2005, according to ENF Vice President of Programs Luz Quiroga. The program expanded from San Diego to Orange County in 2009. Rides started in the Imperial Valley in 2015, and expanded again to San Bernardino, Riverside, and South Los Angeles in 2019.The founders lost their son, Emilio, when he was 6 years old to leukemia. During the exhausting hours of treatment, Emilio's parents realized other families didn't have enough support. When Emilio passed, they turned his loss into a legacy.Johnson said Tay Tay was first diagnosed with a tumor the size of a golf ball in her chest when she was 4-and-a-half years old."It was behind her left lung, it was growing attached to her lung," Johnson said. She found it hard to get to doctor's appointments and treatment. 'It was about three buses, two trolleys and a bus on the other side,' Johnson said. The trip took two and a half hours, then they had to walk up a hill to get to Rady Children's Hospital.In the doctor's office she saw a flier for the Emilio Nares Foundation, and they have been getting picked up ever since, shortening their trip to a half-hour door-to-door.Once they kicked the tumor in Tay Tay's chest, they found out when Tay Tay was 15 that she had a brain tumor. "She's 19 years old now, so she literally is a walking blessing, a walking miracle, and I wouldn't trade her for nothing in the world," Johnson said smiling, pinching her daughter's cheek.Johnson said without the foundation she would have been in tears and they absolutely saved her daughter's life.With the foundation celebrating one million miles, Johnson is working on understanding the impact the foundation had not only on their lives, but on 4,000 children."I wanna cry, because I know I'm crying but the tears won't come out because they're all on the inside, but it's amazing. I'm just happy and blessed for you guys," Johnson said hugging CEO Karen Terra.She hopes telling her story will get more families the help they need.ENF kicked off their "Ride with Emilio" campaign Monday and it continues through the end of the month.
