SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An apparent SDG&E scam reported by a North County couple turned out to be an actual warning to evacuate, just not for them.The power company is calling a recent interaction with a Poway family a "misunderstanding," after the family believed they had been scammed by someone posing as the company.The Chavez family told 10News this week they received a phone call from someone saying they worked for SDG&E, telling them they needed to evacuate their home while work was being using a helicopter.The message said, “it requires a helicopter. The helicopter is required from the FAA to have certain properties, like yourself, evacuate the home.”ORIGINAL STORY: Family urging San Diegans to be aware of a possible new SDG&E scamAfter calling SDG&E to confirm, they were told there was no work going on in their area. The family believed they had been scammed. But it turns out, the phone call was true — for a different neighborhood.According to SDG&E, FAA does require residents to leave their homes when work is being done in their area requiring a helicopter and special construction.However, when the Chavez family called SDG&E, they didn't use the number the original caller provided. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Airports across the nation saw more than 6 million travelers Thanksgiving weekend, concerning medical professionals.Dr. Davey Smith, Chief of Infectious Diseases at UC San Diego, is worried those who gathered with people outside their household will contract the coronavirus."The infection will go on to spread to their household members, other people they work with, etc., so we'll see more cases on top of more cases," Smith said.San Diego has been in the middle of a surge, with climbing coronavirus cases steeper than we saw in July. Smith said Thanksgiving gatherings could bring a spike on top of it all."It gets actually a little bit worse, so heading into Christmas, we can start seeing our cases rise, and Christmas is an even longer holiday with more opportunities for gathering and if they're not going to be socially distancing I can just see how this piles on," Smith said.Just up the freeway, Los Angeles will see more restrictions Monday, limiting retail capacities, closing playgrounds and prohibiting any gatherings with those outside your household."They might be telling us what's going to happen to us soon. I hope that's not the case, but I do worry they are the canary in the coal mine," he said.The density of cases makes it even more important to take precautions like wearing a mask, washing your hands and keeping your distance. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An explosion of COVID-19 cases across California has many businesses once again changing how they operate.But not by choice. The changes come after most counties find themselves in the state's most restrictive purple tier.San Diego County's move to the purple tier means back to takeout and outdoor only dining."I see red … Not in the black right now," says Terryl Gavre, owner of Café 222 in San Diego. "I've been here 29 years, this restaurant opened in 1992 … and I am doing less in sales than I was doing in 1992."Gavre's other spot, Bankers Hill Bar and Restaurant, is in what she describes as a hibernation period. Hunkering down and trying not to lose money.Those business decisions come with a cost."If we stay open, every month you watch the savings account go down, down, down," Gavre said. "We had 15 employees here pre-COVID we're now down to 5. So 10 of my staff members have been laid off. At Bankers Hill Bar and Restaurant, we had 40 people on staff."This week, 28 other California counties across the states moved back into the purple tier."My first thought was that's very frustrating. My second thought was immediately what I've been doing for the last eight months which is lying in bed awake thinking how are we going to pull this off," said Ryan Joiner, who owns Athlon Fitness & Performance in San Luis Obispo.The rules say fitness facilities located in purple tier counties can only operate outdoors.While some businesses have spent the last nine months treading water, the most recent frustration comes with the governor's Monday press conference and changes to the tier system, allowing counties to move back a tier after one week, not two.It drastically changed the makeup of the state and how many businesses across the state can operate."Counties can move back after one week, not just two weeks," Gov. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An effort is underway to crack down on illegal party boats and other charter vessels operating on San Diego Bay. The Port of San Diego wants to create new charter permit requirements to make it easier for those who want to operate legally to do so. Currently, legal charter vessel operators must obtain a Permit from a marina or sportishing landing where they board passengers, and according to the Port there are more charter vessel operators than there are available slips at the marinas and sportfishing landings on San Diego Bay.To address this problem, the Port proposes to issue all Charter Vessel Operation Permits (Permits) for all Charter Vessel Operations and collect license agreement fees from qualified Charter Vessel Operators who do not have an agreement to operate from a marina or sportfishing landing. “San Diego Bay great place to do charter business because it's almost entirely landlocked, not subject to swells, makes for great party boats, cruising,” says Captain John Valente of San Diego Bay Cruises. Valente spent 15 months and almost 0,000 to get his boat in compliance with federal regulations. The figure does not include the price of insurance. Last year Harbor Police discovered roughly 200 charter vessels operating illegally in San Diego. “It’s very disheartening and it hurts because that's revenue lost. I need to pay the bills, I need to pay my rent,” says Valente. Officers and the Coast Guard are conducting joint patrols to stop the illegal operators. "It's not easy, the enforcement, but this does strengthen the rules and make it pretty clear who can and cannot be charter operators,” said Chief Mark Stainbrook, who added he would consider undercover operations if necessary. Stainbrook said the deadly diving boat fire off Santa Barbara's coast is another reminder at why getting this issue right is so important; they can't risk unsafe charters on the water. Valente says he's glad the Port is amending regulations, but isn't sure the current proposal goes far enough.
