LONDON, England — A Banksy painting self-destructed right after it was won at a Sotheby's auction last week, and the bidder, whose identity has not been made known, will still go through with the purchase. The London auction house said 1.04 million pounds was paid for "Girl With Balloon", which surprised everyone in the room when the painting partially moved through a shredder concealed in the frame. The painting has been retitled "Love is in the Bin" and authenticated by Banksy, an artist with a face no one has seen. 534

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A California woman said Saturday that she had to drive herself to the hospital and give birth without her husband after he was detained by immigration agents.U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials said the man was detained because he was wanted on an outstanding arrest warrant in a homicide case in Mexico.Maria del Carmen Venegas said she and her husband, Joel Arrona Lara, were driving to the hospital Wednesday when they stopped for gas in San Bernardino, just east of Los Angeles.Surveillance footage shows two vehicles immediately flank the couple's van after they pulled into the gas station. Agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement questioned the couple and asked for identification, Venegas said.Venegas, 32, said she provided hers but that Arrona had left his at home in their rush to the hospital. The surveillance footage shows the agents handcuffing the 35-year-old Arrona and taking him away, leaving a sobbing Venegas alone at the gas station.Venegas said she drove herself to the hospital for a scheduled cesarean section for the birth of her fifth child."I feel terrible," Venegas said in a telephone interview from the hospital as her newborn son Damian cried in the background."We need him now more than ever," she said.Venegas said she and her husband came to the U.S. 12 years ago from the city of Leon in the central Mexican state of Guanajuato. They do not have legal authorization to live in the U.S., and all five of their children are U.S. citizens, she said.Venegas said her husband is a hard worker and the sole provider of the family. In a statement issued Saturday afternoon, Immigration and Custom Enforcement said Arrona "was brought to ICE's attention due to an outstanding warrant issued for his arrest in Mexico on homicide charges," spokeswoman Lori Haley said.ICE said agents with the agency's Fugitive Operations Team detained Arrona on Wednesday and said he remained in custody pending removal proceedings.Though the team prioritizes arresting immigrants who are transnational gang members, child sex offenders and those who've had previous convictions for violent crimes, the agency's statement said it "will no longer exempt classes or categories of removable aliens from potential enforcement.""All of those in violation of the immigration laws may be subject to immigration arrest, detention and, if found removable by final order, removal from the United States," the statement said.Emilio Amaya Garcia, director of the San Bernardino Community Service Center, said his nonprofit group is providing legal help to Venegas and Arrona, will file a motion on Monday for an immigration court to set a bail hearing for Arrona and will ask that his removal proceedings be canceled.Garcia did not respond to messages and calls for comment about the arrest warrant in Mexico. 2861

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The western Joshua tree needs protection under the California Endangered Species Act because of threats from climate change and habitat destruction, the Center for Biological Diversity said in a petition Tuesday to the state's Fish and Game Commission. The petition comes amid rising concern about the future of the crazy-limbed trees with spikey leaves that have come to symbolize the Mojave Desert and draw throngs to Joshua Tree National Park."The state has to step up for these trees," center conservation director Brendan Cummings said in a statement. The petition asks that western Joshua trees be given "threatened" status under the act.The request states that the trees meet the definition of a plant that "is likely to become an endangered species in the foreseeable future in the absence of the special protection and management efforts."Researchers have found that Joshua trees are dying off due to hotter and drier conditions, and fewer young trees are surviving, according to the center, a nonprofit conservation organization based in Tucson, Arizona. The trees are migrating to higher elevations where there are cooler and more moist conditions, but they face destruction by fire due to invasive, non-native grasses in those locations.Joshua trees also face challenges due to urban sprawl in the desert as well degradation of habitat for energy projects, powerlines, pipelines and off-road-vehicle use.The western Joshua tree's habitat includes Joshua Tree National Park and stretches to the west along the north slopes of the San Bernardino and San Gabriel mountain ranges into the Antelope Valley, northward along the eastern flank of the southern Sierra Nevada and eastward toward the edge of Death Valley National Park and into Nevada. The eastern Joshua tree — a distinctly different plant — lives in the Mojave National Preserve and eastward into Nevada, Arizona and Utah. The Center for Biological Diversity said that under the California Endangered Species Act, the state Department of Fish and Wildlife has three months to make a recommendation to the Fish and Game Commission, which would then vote on the petition next year. 2171

LOS ANGELES (AP) — California hospitals are battling to find beds to house patients amid fears that the exploding coronavirus infection rate will exhaust resources and health care workers. Nearly 17,000 people were hospitalized with confirmed or suspected COVID-19 infections — more than double the previous peak reached in July. One state model estimates that number could reach 75,000 by mid-January. Hospitals around the state are putting patients where they can to free up ICU beds, including using tents for emergency room overflows. Top government infectious-disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci says some areas of California are “just right at that cusp of getting overrun.” 685

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Staples Center will serve as a vote center for the November election in connection with the agreement to end the boycott of playoff games by NBA players, it was announced Saturday. The agreement between the players' union and league announced Friday to end the boycott included a commitment to work with officials in every NBA city to use team arenas as voting locations for the November election.Voters will be able to cast their ballots at Staples Center beginning Oct. 30 through Election Day, Nov. 3. Staples Center will also act as a vote by mail drop box location for those who prefer to drop off their voted mail-in ballot in an official drop box provided by the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk. The Los Angeles Clippers and Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk Dean Logan announced Friday that the Forum in Inglewood will be a vote center for the November election. 932
