SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — California officials said Friday that a technical glitch caused data on hundreds of thousands of COVID-19 tests to go unreported.Despite the inaccurate data, officials say they are still seeing a trend showing a decrease in case rates. Hospitalization and death data, however, is collected differently and unaffected by the glitch.According to the state, the data system they use failed and that led to inaccurate case numbers and case positivity rates. That failure prevented counties from having some of the data they need to monitor and respond to the virus in local communities, like contact tracing.The state says that about two weeks ago, a server outage created a delay in lab records coming into the reporting system. At the same time, they realized they weren't getting data from one of the largest commercial reporting labs for about five days.California Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly says the issues have been fixed."We expect that over the next 24 to 48 hours that the backlog that's between 250,000 to 300,000 cases will be resolved, giving us a better sense of the number of tests that were delayed," Ghaly told reporters on Friday. "We are reporting this data to the counties based on the date the specimen was collected so we can attribute it to the appropriate date."The state says the system was not built for the volume of data it's receiving. It's putting new systems in place and has created a backup system to double-check the data and reports.California's County Monitoring Watch List was paused last week so that the glitch does not play a role in decision making about county statuses.Gov. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — County health officials say with the summer months well underway, they've seen an uptick in the number of children that have needed to be rescued from private pools after nearly drowning.Officials say there have been 49 rescues in private pools, beaches, and bays from March through July, compared to 37 in the same period in 2019 and 33 in 2018. Nearly all of those rescued this year have needed to be taken to the hospital for treatment.Of those 49 that occurred this year, 28 were in pools and 14 were in the ocean, lakes, or bays. The rest did not report a specific body of water. Many public pools have been closed since March due to the pandemic."Parents and guardians must take the necessary precautions to keep these incidents from happening," said Wilma Wooten, county public health officer, said. "Children who swim in pools at home are at higher risk of drowning, especially as parents struggle to supervise their children while continuing to work at home through the summer months because of the novel coronavirus."The county says it's important to teach children to swim, never leave a child unsupervised in or near water, avoid alcohol if you're swimming, and learn CPR.At home, the county recommends installing a fence around the pool and hot tub, installing pool alarms, and keeping an eye on drains and pool toys that could be a tripping hazard. 1389
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Computers have become a lifeline to San Diegans during the pandemic and a new partnership between the city and non-profit San Diego Futures Foundation could make it easier for people in need to get connected.Executive Director of San Diego Futures Foundation Gary Knight said the need skyrocketed the first three weeks of the shut down in March, "we distributed over half our annual inventory in that three weeks."That's more than 1,500 computers. The non profit partners with companies like Qualcomm, General Atomics and San Diego County to take on their old computers, refurbish them and connect them with people in need.City of San Diego Digital Strategy Manager Jen Lebron said 30,000 households don't have a computer, just within the city limits.Right now that means limited connection to healthcare, education and job seeking material."San Diego Futures Foundation has an incredibly broad reach, that way we can get these computers in the hands of students, seniors, veterans, foster families and non profits that really need the help," Lebron said.Michelle Sanudo recieved a computer from SDFF this month and said it's made her feel independent and successful. She's a single mom who relied on the library to entertain her four and one-year-old children while she worked."Really it was kind of like a sanctuary, I would get to do my paperwork for school, also apply for jobs," Sanudo said."When they closed the libraries that's when it hit me." She said the computer allows her to order groceries so she can keep her family safe during the pandemic and pursue her dream of becoming a medical assistant.As the need for computers continues in San Diego and SDFF's inventory wanes, they need more donations. That's where the city is stepping in. For the past year the city has been vetting the non profit. Wednesday the City Council Economic Development and Intergovernmental Relations Committee unanimously approved the partnership. Now it must go before the full council to receive approval. The item is on the docket for Tuesday, the 21st."We are ready with nearly 2,300 computers that we can give to San Diego Futures Foundation." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As the Valley Fire raged across parts of eastern San Diego County, emergency assistance workers put into action plans they'd been working on for months to handle the dual disaster of a wildfire during a pandemic."It completely changed our approach," says Red Cross Regional CEO Sean Mahoney.The Red Cross has been planning and training for months, knowing this situation would likely arise this fall.Mahoney says their plan included Temporary Evacuation Points instead of group shelters, hotel rooms for people who needed somewhere to stay, grab and go or delivery meals, and an emphasis on sanitation and health screenings to keep volunteers and evacuees safe."We planned for this as much as we possibly could, but exercise is just an exercise. Doing the real thing is where you have those real lessons learned," Mahoney says.During the Valley Fire, the Red Cross assisted 440 people in 174 families. They served around 9,000 meals and snacks.Mahoney says his staff's dedication, along with 107 volunteers who worked 12-hour shifts, helped things go smoothly.But not everything went according to plan. On the first night of evacuations, the Red Cross ran out of hotel rooms, especially for people who had pets. Some evacuees without RVs had to sleep in their cars.Mahoney says the busy Labor Day Weekend, combined with hotel capacity restrictions because of the coronavirus, leads to fewer available rooms.To make sure it doesn't happen again, Mahoney says the Red Cross is already working on backup plans to open limited group shelters, with social distancing put in place to keep people apart. He told 10News they've already scouted hundreds of locations around San Diego.Meanwhile, the San Diego Humane Society also put in new protocols for safety during the pandemic. They helped hundreds of animals during the Valley Fire, and say the most significant challenges were limiting contact with owners and making sure their field teams followed the rules about distancing and wearing masks."The more people you interact with, the more likely you are to come in contact with somebody who is transmitting coronavirus," says Lt. John Peaveler. "So, we've had our biggest safety precautions on that side."Both groups say they'll take all the Valley Fire experience and put it to use in the next disaster. Since wildfire season is just beginning, they're sure it will come in handy. 2405
