A car plowed into bicyclists and pedestrians on a street in New Orleans, killing two people and injuring six others as the city celebrates Mardi Gras festivities.A majority of the people struck Saturday night were on bicycles, but it's unclear how many, Police Chief Shaun Ferguson said. Of the people injured, three are in critical condition. The driver, Tashonty Toney, 32, was arrested and faces several charges, including two counts of vehicular homicide, hit and run, and reckless operation, the New Orleans Police Department tweeted.Toney was not injured, and had originally fled the scene, Ferguson said"We were able to apprehend the subject so quickly because citizens stopped this individual, because they thought they were helping someone who had just been involved in a one-car accident," Ferguson said.Officers determined that the accident scene spanned several blocks of Esplanade Avenue. Earlier, police had said they are investigating whether the driver was intoxicated, and standard protocol involves breathalyzer and blood tests.Police did not provide details on the people killed or injured. The Orleans Parish Coroner's Office will release the victims' identities after autopsies are completed and family members notified. While no motive is currently known, the incident does not appear connected to the Endymion parade, a Mardi Gras-related activity that was happening nearby, Ferguson said. The crash comes about two years after a drunken driver rammed into a crowd taking part in the Endymion parade, injuring at least 28 people. The driver in that 2017 crash, Neilson Rizzuto, was charged with vehicular negligence resulting in injury, and reckless operation and hit-and-run driving. The Endymion parade is one of the most popular events leading up to Mardi Gras, which is Tuesday. Mardi Gras is a day of revelry that includes parades, parties and food before the Christian fasting season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. It marks the last day of the Carnival season. 2001

A former top White House official on Thursday delivered a full-throated rebuttal to the "fictional narrative" pushed by President Donald Trump and his GOP allies, while a US diplomat in the Ukrainian embassy provided impeachment investigators with a firsthand account of the President asking for an investigation of his political opponent.Fiona Hill, who served as Trump's top Russia adviser until she left the administration this summer, warned the House Intelligence Committee as part of the impeachment inquiry's last scheduled public hearing that the Kremlin is prepared to strike again in 2020 and remains a serious threat to American democracy that the United States must seek to combat."Based on questions and statements I have heard, some of you on this committee appear to believe that Russia and its security services did not conduct a campaign against our country — and that perhaps, somehow, for some reason, Ukraine did," Hill said. "This is a fictional narrative that has been perpetrated and propagated by the Russian security services themselves."Hill is testifying on Capitol Hill on Thursday alongside 1132

A lawsuit has been filed against the food delivery driver accused of stabbing a local restaurant owner. On Oct. 27, 2018, Mackie Allen was waiting in the parking lot for his DoorDash delivery run to be ready. Roma Deli & Restaurant owner Fabio Coppola came out and knocked on his window to let Allen known the food was ready — that’s when he says Allen became hostile. Once inside, Coppola says the DoorDash driver started screaming obscenities at him. Despite his efforts to calm him down, Copolla said he would file a complaint against DoorDash because of Allen’s behavior. That’s when Allen allegedly lost it, pulled out a pocket knife and slashing Coppola’s left hand. The owner says he ran for his life, and that Allen then stabbed him in the ribs below the heart and in the back multiple times outside. It’s believed Allen then delivered the food from Roma Deli to the DoorDash customer. “This is a life or death situation,” says Donavin Britt, self-defense expert. Britt has been teaching folks how to protect themselves at Las Vegas Krav Maga for years and knows all too well the dangers the food service industry faces now more than ever.“You have to devise a plan, all business owners out there are known to carry cash, you’re moving back and forth, you’re dealing with unruly customers,” says Britt.“You got to be ready to take them down or run as fast as you can.” With food delivery services on the rise like DoorDash and Uber Eats, Britt believes the threat is amplified. The attorney representing Copolla and his wife are holding DoorDash accountable, and claims Allen had prior felony convictions. Attorney Richard Schofeld says “DoorDash's flawed background check policy almost cost Mr. Coppola his life. This case raises important questions in terms of the minimum standards that should be required to protect both consumers and restaurant workers.”DoorDash sent the following statement: 1921

The coveted crash test ratings for vehicles are in desperate need of an update, according to multiple auto safety groups. The system hasn't been updated since 2010. Right now, 98% of all vehicles get four or five stars. “It’s the equivalent of Halloween — everyone gets candy,” says Jason Levine with the Center for Auto Safety. “The idea is supposed to be separating between things that are safe and things that are really safe.” Levine says the tests are too easy to pass and they don't help consumers understand the difference between cars. Some recommendations include updating the ratings by testing new technology that helps drivers avoid crashes, like emergency automatic braking, and accounting for how passengers in the rear seats are impacted Experts also recommend testing systems that help avoid hitting pedestrians. This type of testing already exists, it just hasn't been mandated in the U.S. “NHSTA, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, has dragged its feet on renewing these ratings for almost a decade now,” Levine says. “They said they were going to update them in 2015. They didn't. They said they were going to update them in 2018 and they didn't. Here we are, we just saw a press release of NHSTA saying we'll do something in 2020 but they haven't even really explained what that is.” Advocates also say there's a need to update crash test dummies to reflect changes we've seen in drivers, like weight, height and age.Auto safety groups would like to see a silver star added for older drivers to better understand how a car might protect them in a crash. 1604
