NEW YORK -- A Bronx man is facing murder charges after his mother was found dead in their apartment early Wednesday, according to the NYPD.Police say Carmen Aponte, 66, was discovered by her adult daughter around 1:30 a.m. when she came home to the family's apartment on Seneca Avenue, near Faile Street in the Hunts Point section.Responding officers say they found the woman unconscious in her bed with injuries to her head. EMS responded and pronounced the mother dead at the scene.Later Wednesday, police announced Aponte's adult son was arrested in connection with her death.Police believe Steven Castro, 40, struck his mother in the head with an object during a "jealous rage."It was not immediately clear what the object was or what sparked the man's rage.Castro is now facing charges including murder, manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon, according to police.This story was originally published by Mark Sundstrom at WPIX. 949

NEW YORK (KGTV) -- Jeffrey Epstein was found injured in his New York jail cell following a possible suicide attempt, TMZ reports. According to law enforcement sources cited by TMZ, Epstein was found by guards in his cell Wednesday night with marks around his neck. Epstein is currently in federal jail on sex trafficking charges. A federal judge denied bail for Epstein last week. He will remain in jail pending trial. As Stewart explained on Instagram , she wanted to be picked up on Fifth Avenue and 57th Street.Stewart wrote the first car did not show up and the second parked "halfway down" the street where she "could not see the license plate." That car was pointed in the wrong direction, delaying her journey as the car snaked through midtown Manhattan traffic.But the worst part was the car "was a mess inside and out!!!!!!!!" NEW YORK (AP) — A new government report shows that since the coronavirus pandemic began, the U.S. has seen 300,000 more deaths than it usually would.The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has been tracking how many deaths have been reported and comparing them with counts seen in other years. Usually, between the beginning of February and the end of September, about 1.9 million deaths are reported. This year, it’s closer to 2.2 million – a 14.5% increase.The CDC says the coronavirus was involved in about two-thirds of the excess deaths. CDC officials say it’s likely the virus was a factor in many other deaths too. For example, someone with heart attack symptoms may have hesitated to go to a hospital that was busy with coronavirus patients.The largest segment of the excess deaths, about 95,000, were in elderly people ages 75 to 84. That was 21.5% more than in a normal year. But the biggest relative increase, 26.5%, was in people ages 25 to 44. Deaths in people younger than 25 actually dropped slightly.Deaths were up for different racial and ethnic groups, but the largest increase – 54% – was among Hispanic Americans.According to a printed study in the Journal of Hospital Medicine, since the pandemic began, the mortality rate among hospitalized patients dropped by 18 percentage points.Researchers said the patients in the study now have a 7.6% chance of dying, whereas they had a 25.6% chance of dying at the start of the pandemic. 1465

NEW YORK CITY — A man sleeping on a Harlem street was hit with fireworks and suffered burns, police said Monday after a video of the incident circulated on social media.Video shows someone lighting and throwing a firework at the man, who appears to be homeless. The firework explodes as it hits the man.Another person can be seen in the video filming the incident.An NYPD spokesperson said the department received a call at around 4 a.m. Monday near 62 Lenox Ave. (Malcolm X Boulevard) in Harlem.Officers found the man, 66, suffering from minor burns.
