SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego State announced it is withdrawing from bowl consideration to give its football players the opportunity to spend time with their parents during the Christmas break. The decision ends the Aztecs' streak of playing in a bowl game for 10 consecutive seasons, which equaled the nation's 11th-longest active streak. With a 4-4 record and 11 bowls canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic it was unlikely San Diego State would receive a bowl invitation. They were not among the teams projected to play in a bowl in projections released Sunday by Jerry Palm of CBS Sports."Our guys have really been through a lot, I think more than any of us could imagine," coach Brady Hoke said Wednesday, following the Aztecs' final practice of 2020. "They get to play a game they love, but with the uncertainty of being able to play in a bowl game we have made the decision that we will not play another game this season."I cannot tell you how proud I am of this team with what they have been through and the commitment they showed to one another. Many of them have not seen their parents since May and we want them to have an opportunity to go home." 1168

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Santa Ana winds and low humidity levels will keep the risk of wildfire high across the San Diego area into Tuesday, as they did for much of last week.To alert the public to the combustion hazards posed by the gusty and arid conditions, the National Weather Service issued a red flag wildfire warning for local mountain and western-valleys communities, effective through 10 p.m. Tuesday. A high-wind warning also will be in effect from 6 this evening through noon Tuesday in those same areas.Outdoor burning, mechanized brush clearing and other potentially spark-creating activities should be avoided over the period, as any fires that develop will spread rapidly, according to the NWS.As of late this afternoon, San Diego Gas & Electric had instituted public-safety power shutoffs in parts of Descanso, Jamul, Potrero, Ramona, Santa Ysabel and Valley Center in a bid to avoid any blazes ignited by transmission equipment. A total of 2,807 addresses were affected, and the utility advised another 47,676 of its customers across the East County that their power might be shut off as a precaution as well.Conditions are expected to warm up Tuesday and Wednesday, after which temperatures will drop slightly on Thursday and Friday, forecasters said. 1275

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Rep. Scott Peters, D-San Diego, Friday called on the federal government to determine and commit to an interim and long-term plan for nuclear waste storage.Peters challenged the rest of the federal government to find a storage solution during a meeting of the House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee's Environment and Climate Change Subcommittee. The subcommittee, on which Peters sits, held a hearing on three bills that would establish a process to send spent nuclear fuel rods from decommissioned plants to designated storage areas around the country. To do so, Peters said the government should invoke the Constitution's supremacy clause, which requires states to follow federal law if they have conflicting statutes.``There's not a lot of enthusiasm among the states to accept any defined or undefined amount of nuclear waste. There just isn't,'' Peters said.``To me ... the magic of federalism is the supremacy clause and the ability of the federal government to ... (say) in this geology, per this engineering, (and) through this licensing process that this risk is lower.''Two of the bills the subcommittee considered -- the Spent Fuel Prioritization Act and the Storage and Transportation of Residual and Excess Nuclear Fuel Act -- would directly affect San Diego County by relocating spent nuclear fuel from the defunct San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station to designated storage sites like Yucca Mountain in the Nevada desert. The plant shut down in 2012, but nearly four million pounds of spent fuel cells remain buried under the plant in a temporary storage facility about 100 feet from the Pacific Ocean. The plant sits approximately 60 miles or less from both San Diego and Los Angeles and the storage facility continues to be susceptible to a major earthquake or significant sea level rise. The bills remain in limbo due to pushback from legislators who represent the districts in which spent fuel rods would be stored. However, Peters' office hopes the bills could get a vote out of the committee by the end of the year. 2073

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Plans to replace an aging terminal at San Diego International Airport cleared a hurdle Thursday, with the Airport Authority Board's unanimous approval of the Environmental Impact Report for its major redevelopment plan. The new Terminal 1 would replace the current 53-year-old terminal, and offer 11 additional gates and upgraded amenities for passengers, including new restaurants, seating, shops and additional security checkpoints.Officials are hoping to break ground on the terminal sometime next year, with the first phase of gates anticipated to open in 2024.RELATED: Travel website ranks San Diego International as best airport in the US"Today, we took an important vote that will help ensure our airport can accommodate expected passenger growth well into the future and ensure our customers and their families are treated to a better airport experience than today's Terminal 1 can provide," said April Bolind, Airport Authority Board Chairman. "The plan will also ensure the airport can continue to function as an economic engine for the region for decades to come."The new terminal is part of a redevelopment plan that includes roadway and transportation projects that airport officials say will ease access into San Diego International, including plans for an "all-electric shuttle fleet" set to launch later this year, which would carry riders to and from the Old Town Transit Center.Airport officials say the new terminal and streamlined transportation to and from the airport will help accommodate a growing number of passengers, with around 25 million traveling through the airport last year. The next steps for the project include federal environmental review and approval from the California Coastal Commission. 1752
