But it's a mixed bag when you break down new statistics today from SANDAG.The good news is that property crime is down so far in 2017.Car thefts are down by 13-percent while burglary and larceny are each down by 9-percents for violent crime, it really depends on where you live.SANDAG breaks down the numbers into 17 jurisdictions. Violent crime is up this year in 12 of them.Those communities with a rise in crime were Carlsbad, Chula Vista, Oceanside, Encinitas, Lemon Grove, San Marcos, Santee, Vista, Fallbrook, Lakeside, Spring Valley, and Valley Center.Homicides are down 14-percent and rape is down by three. But robberies are up 3-percent and aggravated assault has increased 1-percent. 791

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — More people have tested positive at the San Diego Convention Center, which has been serving as a shelter for San Diego's homeless since April.Regular testing has been conducted at the Convention Center since the shelter opened, but there was a rise in positive cases starting with tests administered on Dec. 3. Since then, there have been 120 positive cases detected. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Police say they have made an arrest in connection with a deadly shooting in the Midway District during a meeting set up on social media.San Diego Police arrested 18-year-old Angel Garcia of San Diego on Wednesday and charged him in the murder of Eduardo Salguero, 18, of San Diego, on Nov. 25.Police say Salguero had arranged to purchase an item through Snapchat and met for the transaction behind several businesses in the 3600 block of Midway Dr. When he arrived, two Hispanic males entered his vehicle. During the meeting, one of the suspects pulled out a handgun and the transaction turned into an armed robbery.RELATED: Midway District shooting victim killed during Snapchat transaction, police sayMultiple gunshots were fired inside the vehicle before the two suspects fled. Salguero was taken to a nearby hospital but died of his injuries.Both suspects were described the suspects as Hispanic males, between 20-30 years old, who were wearing dark clothing at the time. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - More than five percent of San Diego homeowners owe more on their mortgages than their homes are even worth, according to a new Zillow report.A total of 23,290 homes in the region are in negative equity, meaning a home's value is lower than the balances on the mortgage. About 1,906 of those homeowners owe at least twice as much as their homes are currently worth, the report says.San Diego's amount of underwater homes compares elsewhere in the state to 19,479 homes in Sacramento, 20,179 homes in San Francisco, and 46,147 in Riverside.MAKING IT IN SAN DIEGO:  604

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — New numbers show the trash continues to pile up at San Diego landfills.San Diego County's daily waste disposal per person increased from 5.5 pounds in 2016 to 5.6 pounds in 2017, according to the research group, Equinox Project, the nonprofit institute at University of San Diego."When the economy's booming and there's more disposable income, people tend to buy more stuff. That means more packaging, and it tends to come with more waste," said Nilmini Silva-Send, a researcher with the Equinox Project.San Diego County's disposal rate is among the highest in the state.More trash means more greenhouse gasses released and less landfill space. As for the biggest trash makers, Del Mar comes in at more than 17 pounds per person, followed by Coronado and Carlsbad. The Del Mar Fairgrounds and Naval Base Coronado are among several possible factors. "The higher the socioeconomic level, the more waste they will tend to produce," said Silva-Send. The cities tossing the least amount of trash per person are Oceanside, Chula Vista, and Imperial beach. The biggest increase for trash disposal happened in Santee, while the biggest year-to-year decreases were in Imperial Beach and National City. The waste report is part of the Equinox Project's annual Quality of Life Dashboard report, which provides a snapshot of economic and environmental trends in the region. 1389
