All across our country, small business owners are fighting day in and day out to stay afloat during these uncertain times.Two small business owners in Utah have seen just about everything in their lifetimes, and their resolve to keep going is inspiring.In the heart of Sugarhouse, Utah, there’s a place that uses perhaps more sugar than anywhere else.“We bake a lot of eclairs,” said Bob Walkenhorst with a smile.Bob is 87-years-old and his older brother, Al, is 92-years-old.For almost six decades, Bob and Al Walkenhorst have been showing up to work at Carol’s Pastry Shop in a suburb of Salt Lake City.“I get up every morning at 5:30 and get down here about 6 am,” Bob said.“We have a lousy retirement plan,” added Al with a chuckle.The co-owners mix together like peanut butter and jelly.“We get along good together,” Bob said. “We’ve never had an argument.”They say baking is in their blood.“My dad came over to this country in 1924 and this was the bakery,“ Al said pointing to and old black-and-white photo.The brothers were separated when Uncle Sam came calling.“In 1950, I got drafted for the Korean War, just started, so I pulled Bob out of high school and he took over at the bakery,” Al said. “When I came home, he left for two years to serve.”They have seen their fair share of change.“There isn’t really any little bakeries opened up anymore,” Al said. “They’re dropping by the wayside.”Since March, it’s not big box stores making business tough, it’s a new, bitter ingredient.“It was just after that virus hit,” Bob said. “We stayed open and never closed, but it’s been slow. There is just nobody coming in.”Owning a small business is tough, but COVID-19 is making it even harder.“We depend on all that business just what comes in the door,” Al said. “We aren’t getting those big orders anymore.”The brothers hope to keep making eclairs and fresh donuts for as many years as they can.“Hard work is what keeps us going and gives us something to do,” Al said.Now, the next generation is pitching in.“I love getting to work with my grandpa and great uncle,” said Conner Johnson. “They are amazing.”Bob and Al want to keep Carol’s Pastry Shop in the family.“I don’t know what’s gonna happen in the future,” Johnson said. “It’s hard to tell what’s going to happen even day by day now.”For now, the brothers plan on showing up every day.“COVID is not going to stop these guys,” Johnson said with a laugh.Al listened in and smiled.“You know, it’s like my father used to tell me; if you put in good work and good ingredients, then you always get a good product out of it,” Al said. “We’ve always used the best ingredients there is.” 2647

A worldwide study of the coronavirus released in the journal Cell indicates that the dominant strand of COVID-19 is causing the virus to spread faster.But the study’s authors said that even though the coronavirus is able to spread faster, the virus is no more or less severe than earlier in the outbreak.The study’s authors indicate that the virus has mutated, and that the Spike protein amino acid D614G has become the virus’ dominant strand.“Our global tracking data show that the G614 variant in Spike has spread faster than D614. We interpret this to mean that the virus is likely to be more infectious,” study author Bette Korber of Los Alamos National Laboratory.The federal government’s leading infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci addressed concerns that the virus could be more contagious in an interview with The Journal of the American Medical Association on Thursday.“The data is showing there’s a single mutation that makes the virus be able to replicate better and maybe have high viral loads,” Dr. Fauci said. “We don’t have a connection to whether an individual does worse with this or not; it just seems that the virus replicates better and may be more transmissible.”Korbe explained in the study how the dominant strand of the virus differs from earlier variants.“In infected individuals G614 is associated with lower RTPCR cycle thresholds, suggestive of higher upper respiratory tract viral loads, although not with increased disease severity,” Korbe said. “These findings illuminate changes important for a mechanistic understanding of the virus, and support continuing surveillance of Spike mutations to aid in the development of immunological interventions.”To read the full study, click here. 1731

After 40 years of making wishes come true, Make-A-Wish America is celebrating something else.The organization chose to celebrate through the eyes of one California teen who had one special and unique wish.Just like a summer camp, Kamp Karina has an activity list that's packed full of fun with dancing, magic, science, and even storytime. All of it was Karina's idea and wish.“The guy who does Olaf’s voice! He appeared there and I was like what the heck! That I had no idea of it surprised me and it made me really happy. It was a shocking moment and it made me really happy,” Karina said.The 16-year-old Central California teen was surprised because, when granted an experience from Make-A-Wish, she really one had one thing in mind.“I actually didn’t know what I wanted to wish for. All I know is I wanted to give, not get,” Karina said.Karina says she's finally free. After seven months of brutal treatment for Lymphoma, she feels like herself again and wants to focus on things she loves, like music and cooking. But her wish is always to help others because she can relate.“I know how it feels to be sick and not have any idea if you’re going to make it or what’s next or - it’s hard, mentally and physically,” Karina said.Karina is part of a new generation of kids who want something bigger, who wants more than receiving something or meeting someone.“But the newest wish kids, which is so inspired, want to go to the fifth idea which is give,” Make-A-Wish CEO Richard Davis said. said. “Karina is embodiment of that. She wanted to give kids a day to forget they're sick.”And so Karina’s wish was granted, and it worked. Hundreds of children from around the country like youths in Connecticut, Florida, South Dakota, California, got to attend Kamp Karina virtually.“We’re introducing a sense of philanthropy and love and care and if you think the world needs anything right now, and I know we need a lot of things, but this hope and the spirit of people working around a child to make their life better is about the most wonderful antidote for anything we’re dealing with that I can think of,” Davis said.Make-a-Wish grants 15,000 wishes a year across America to children who medically qualify. Most of the time, the wish is easily granted.“My favorite ones are the simple ones: I want a dog. I want a blue guitar,” Davis said. “I want to be mayor for a day.”And above all else, it's what comes with that wish that makes Make-A-Wish magical.“We bring families into this right away because it changes the outcome, it certainly changes the trajectory it gives them something to look forward to,” Davis said.When asked if her wish came through, Karina said. “Yes.
