SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Police are alerting San Diego State students and neighbors after a man reportedly tried to steal a someone's phone before fleeing in a waiting vehicle.SDSU Police say the man approached the victim at about 9 p.m. in the 5500 block of Hardy Avenue on Wednesday. The man wrapped his arms around the victim and tried to take a cell phone from their hands, police say.The victim crouched down, grabbed their cell phone, and began screaming. A passerby saw what was happening and intervened, pulling the man off the victim.The man then jumped in to rear of a white sedan with tinted windows being driven by a second suspect.Police described the first suspect as a black male who appeared about 30 years old, 6-feet tall, with average build, short curly black hair and short facial hair. He was last seen shirtless, wearing dark-colored pants and basketball-style sneakers.The suspect in the waiting vehicle was described as a 20- to 30-year-old black female, wearing a gray or white shirt and her hair styled in a bun.Anyone with information is asked to call SDSU Police at 619-594-1991. 1109

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Pilot Robert DeLaurentis touched down this week in San Diego after traveling 26,000 miles in the name of peace.DeLaurentis, known as the peace pilot, flew from the South Pole to the North Pole in a journey that took him to six continents and 22 countries in the name of peace."The mission of the flight is world peace and we're connecting the South Pole and the North Pole, the two places on the planet where peace has always existed and helping to connect everybody in between," DeLaurentis said.His journey to the only two locations on Earth that have never seen war will be chronicled in the upcoming documentary, "Peace Pilot to the Ends of the Earth and Beyond," featuring a collection of interviews, blogging, and observations.DeLaurentis encountered a slew of mechanical issues during his adventure."In fact, when I left Ushuaia for the South Pole I packed up all my personal belongings in a hotel rook with my address I assessed my chances of coming back at about 50%," says DeLaurentis. "Some of the problems we had on the flight included bursting fuel tanks, I was without GPS autopilot, and altitude heading and reference system for five hours."All those issues made worse knew by the coronavirus pandemic when he was forced to quarantine along the way — extending his trip from an intended five months to nine months."For every challenge, there was an opportunity and the pandemic created that for us because I had about a month and a half to reflect on what was happening to really work on my inner process," DeLaurentis said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Poway Unified School District officials say they are going fully online for the fall school year after originally planning to give students the option for in-person instruction.In a letter to parents on Wednesday, the school district said that "stringent" standards that need to be met for in-person classes "have made it impossible for any San Diego County school district to physically reopen schools for in-person instruction before mid-September."PUSD said it planned for the possibility to resume classes in-person after the county was off the state's monitoring list for 14 consecutive days. But the requirement now requires that the county is off the watch list for 28 consecutive days, and if at any point the county exceeds the threshold for three days, it would be back on the state list and have to go through another 28-day cycle."In late Fall, we will reevaluate our plans taking into full consideration then-current public health conditions, and guidelines and restrictions from the Governor and public health department," the district said in a release. "While this information is likely to disappoint the majority of our staff and families who indicated a desire to return to on-campus learning as soon as possible, everyone should know that -- due to our extensive planning thus far -- PUSD will be ready for a prompt and safe return to in-person instruction if permitted to do so come January."The school district says its 2020-21 school year will start virtually on Sept. 2, and remain fully virtual through the December break from Dec. 21 to Jan. 1, 2021.The district adds that teachers and instructional assistants will receive additional training in virtual teaching platforms and tools in August and that the district will provide all the necessary technology for teachers and students. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Near Crystal Pier, an unusual sight greeted residents and beach visitors in North Pacific Beach: a multi-million dollar home spray-painted with graffiti. Feet from Palisades Park is an impressive home, perched on a bluff and boasting a pristine view. That home is now adorned with something not so pristine."Not good. It's an eyesore for the area. Spoils the whole look for the area," said Nick Tulip, a tourist from England.Neighbors say the large tagging appeared on the home over the weekend. "This kind of stuff I've never seen before, so I hope it won't be trending," said Elise Bernier, who lives in the area.Just to the south, along other parts of the shore, the sight of graffiti is more common, especially as school lets out for the summer. Neighbors in North Pacific beach are concerned that could be headed in their direction."It's an early sign of what's to come," said Ron Calkins, a retired firefighter who has seen tagging escalate in other areas."Other people are going to cross it off and put their own tags up.
