The CEOs for auto giants Kia and Hyundai have refused to attend a congressional hearing to explain why hundreds of their vehicles have spontaneously burst into flames.Both carmakers and a spokesman for Democrats on the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation have confirmed the companies’ refusal to send representatives to the hearing, which has been scheduled for next week.A Kia spokesman said the company is working with the committee to “analyze all relevant information associated with any fire or other safety-related matters and will take any necessary corrective action in a timely manner.”A Hyundai spokesman said, “Hyundai takes this matter very seriously, and fully appreciates the concerns of the Senate Commerce, Science & Transportation Committee including those of the Chairman and Ranking Member.”It was not immediately clear whether the U.S. Senate committee would postpone or cancel its Nov. 14 hearing on Kia and Hyundai fires.The call for the hearing came six months after Consumer Investigator Jackie Callaway, of WFTS television station in Tampa, Florida, first reported on the unexplained car fires.Since April, the WFTS I-team has exposed hundreds of Kia and Hyundai models manufactured since 2011 that caught fire across the country.“The hearing will focus on motor vehicle safety issues involving vehicle fires,” stated the identical letters – dated Oct. 16 – and sent to Kia Motors America President and CEO Seungkyu “Sean” Yoon and Hyundai Motor America's Kyung Soo “Kenny” Lee.The CEOs were asked to “promptly identify and respond to defects that may pose a fire risk” at the Nov. 14 hearing in front of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation.In September, an Ohio mother spoke out and called for a federal investigation after watching her son burn alive in her 2014 Kia Soul parked at her apartment complex just outside of Cincinnati last year. 1926

The Federal Aviation Administration issued an emergency directive for inspections of certain Boeing 737 planes due to recent reports of engine shutdowns.The FAA issued an emergency airworthiness directive on Thursday for certain Boeing 737s that have been in storage for more than a week.According to the directive, a certain engine valve may be responsible for four recent reports of engine shutdowns. Agency officials suspect that the valve may become corroded during storage, causing it to remain stuck in the open position.The directive requires that any Boeing 737-300, -400, -500, -600, -700, -700C,-800, -900, and -900ER that have been in storage for a week or longer undergo an inspection before being put back into use. The directive also requires inspections for any of those Boeing models that have completed "less than 10 flight cycles" at the time of the directive after coming out of storage.The inspection order was released the same day that CNBC reported that Boeing told lenders to expect fewer deliveries of its 737 Max planes that initially expected. The 737 Max, a plane Boeing has been developing for years, was grounded in 2019 after a series of crashes. 1185

The endless hum of the hive calls to Chuck Pressler. Each day, he visits the thousands of bees living in his backyard. It’s an appointment he hasn’t missed in years.“It slows you down,” said Pressler.The Navy veteran served four years during the Cold War. Pressler worked in a submarine unit, and now, he works as an EMT. He’s been called to help others in both his careers, but both have come with a price.“It is a sacrifice,” said Pressler. “Whether it's coming back from war, or whether it's dealing with things at home: police, paramedics, firemen, EMT, dispatchers. There is a lot of things that weigh on people after dealing with this for so long. There are humans behind these shields in uniform.”But Pressler found a unique way to take his mind away from the stress: tending several beehives in his backyard and harvesting the honey they produce.“You find yourself talking to them a little bit, and you forget about everything around you while you're doing it, and you're just paying attention to the bees,” said Pressler.He knew the calm he found had to be shared. “From my own experience of how I enjoy it, I discovered that it could be a tool, an actual tool for those that have either experienced PTSD, or just something to take them from their past experiences or their current everyday job.”Pressler started the non-profit Honeybees for Heroes to give other veterans and first responders a chance to ease the traumas they live with every day.“You know it's a brotherhood, sisterhood. It’s all a big family in the end, and everybody sticks together, and I think being around each other and talking, even in general, and dealing with honeybees is, is working towards getting past it,” said Pressler.For so many veterans, talking about mental health and PTSD can be a tough thing to do. That’s why coming out here and focusing on the honeybees can be so healing.“Generally, we don't talk about it unless they bring it up. I try not to revisit any ghosts or bring up any memories. The object is just to let them find their pace.”Pressler now works with a handful of veterans in his own neighborhood one-on-one, even setting them up with their own hives.He says many veterans feel misunderstood and alone, and he wants to be there to help.“Let's be honest, there is a stigma behind it, and people start to look at you like, you know, you're crazy. It's important for the community to know, on a bigger broad scale, that it's OK to deal with these issues and that the people that do these jobs are human and that it requires a human to make these sacrifices to do it,” said Pressler.Pressler said the call to serve is worth every sacrifice, and it’s a mission that doesn’t end when you leave the military.“All of us first responders, veterans all that, that's what we do. We help protect people,” he said.He hopes more will soon realize: fulfilling that promise can come from the most unexpected places.“When you have a beehive with 60,000 honeybees in it, you're their guardian,” said Pressler. “I always say I'm the keeper of the bees or the protector of the bees, but we are their guardian. The British Broadcasting Corporation has reportedly opened an investigation into how journalist Martin Bashir secured Princess Diana's 1995 interview with the network after a shocking allegation aired during a two-part documentary on the British network ITV on Monday and Tuesday.According to USA Today, Bashir allegedly asked a graphic designer to create fake bank statements to persuade Princess Diana to talk to him on camera.According to the New York Times, doubts rose about how Bashir obtained the interview, but an earlier BBC internal investigation exonerated him.During the Nov. 20, 1995 interview, which aired on the BBC's program Panorama, the Princess spoke about how she desperately wanted her marriage to Prince Charles to work. She also spoke about the pressure from the media and her husband's infidelity that caused her to "escape" in binges of eating and vomiting, the Associated Press reported.According to the AP, an estimated 15 to 20 million viewers watched the Princess discuss her life, her children, and her estranged husband Prince Charles. 1074

The family of Jacob Blake is hosting a gathering in Kenosha, Wisconsin on Tuesday ahead of President Donald Trump's visit to the city.The event, which will be held near the site where Blake was shot seven times in the back by a Kenosha police officer, will include a press conference with local officials and family representatives. The event will also include a community clean-up, a food drive, a healing circle, and a voter registration booth.Several days after police officers shot Blake during an Aug. 23 altercation, protests in Kenosha grew violent. The city estimates that million in property damages have been caused by looting and burning amid the unrest.Last Tuesday, 17-year-old Kyle Rittenhouse shot three protesters, two of them fatally, after he drove 20 miles to protect local businesses. Rittenhouse has been arrested in connection with the homicides; his lawyer says that Rittenhouse was shooting in self-defense.In recent days, protests in Kenosha have been peaceful and without incident.The event held by Blake's family comes hours before a visit to the city by President Donald Trump. Several Democratic politicians, including Kenosha's mayor and Wisconsin's governor, have asked Trump to reconsider, saying his presence could stoke more violence in the city.Blake was shot during an altercation with police on Aug. 23. Police say they were responding to a call about a man at a party who "shouldn't have been there."Police attempted to take Blake into custody but say he was non-compliant. Officers say they tried to use stun guns on Blake but could still not take him into custody.Blake had previously told officers he had a knife in his vehicle. At one point during the altercation, as Blake approached his car, Officer Rusten Sheskey shot Blake in the back at least seven times. A knife was later found on the floorboard of the car.Blake is still hospitalized and is paralyzed from the waist down.
