BEIJING, July 16 (Xinhua) -- The international community has continued to condemn the July 5 riots in Urumqi, the capital of China's northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, which has left 192 people dead.     Religious leaders and some experts also voiced support for the joint efforts by the Chinese government and various ethnic groups to safeguard ethnic unity and social stability.     Regional leaders of two major Islamic organizations -- Nahdatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah -- in the Indonesian city of Surabaya said Islam advocates peace and opposes violence.     Muslims love peace, pursue peace and take real actions to maintain peace and oppose any violent and terrorist actions, they said Tuesday while meeting Wang Huagen, Chinese general consulate in Surabaya, Indonesia's second largest city.     The two Islamic leaders also expressed the hope that social order in Urumqi could be restored soon.     Pierre Picard, a human geologist and China expert at the University of Paris, said he was shocked by the July 5 incident which was a violent crime orchestrated by foreign terrorists and separatist forces.     China has the right to take actions to maintain national stability and restore social order and the measures it has taken were appropriate, he told Xinhua.     No country in the world can tolerate attacks by terrorist forces, he added.     The Al-Riyadh newspaper, one of the leading newspapers in Saudi Arabia, said in a report on Tuesday that the July 5 incident in Xinjiang was a crime of violence that was premeditated and organized.     The unrest was not an ethnic issue nor a religious one, but a case against public order incited by a few separatists and mobs, it stressed.     Bahrain's Al-Ayam newspaper shared the view. In     a report published on Tuesday, it said the incident was by no means an ethnic or religious issue, but a grave violent crime involving beating,     smashing, looting and burning premeditated, organized and instigated by the separatist forces both in and outside China.     The purpose of the separatists is to sabotage ethnic unity and social stability in Xinjiang, said the report.     The local government of the autonomous region has adopted effective measures in accordance with law to stop the violent crimes in a bid to safeguard social stability and resume normal social order as well as protect local people's rights and interests, it said.     The report said that the Chinese government had introduced and carried out a series of ethnic and religious policies since the People's Republic of China was established.     China always sticks to the principle of protecting ethnic minorities equal rights and safeguarding ethnic solidarity, and is firmly opposed to ethnic discrimination and oppression of any ethnic group as well as any activities aimed at undermining ethnic unity, it said.     China has always valued the role played by Islamic countries and attached great importance to its friendly relations with them, the report said, adding that such relations will be further cemented through joint efforts by both sides.

HONG KONG, June 30 (Xinhua) -- The renminbi deposits with authorized institutions in Hong Kong rose 0.8 percent in May to 53. 4 billion yuan (7.8 billion U.S. dollars), representing about 2 percent of the foreign currency deposits, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority said Tuesday.     The total deposits rose 2 percent in the same month, with the HK dollar deposits rising 2.7 percent as the expansion in demand and savings deposits exceeded the contraction in time deposits.     Foreign currency deposits climbed 1.4 percent.     Seasonally-adjusted HK dollar M1, the narrowest measure of money supply in an economy, rose 9.6 percent in May and 26.8 percent from a year earlier. Unadjusted HK dollar M3, the broader measure, grew 2.5 percent in May and 8.1 percent year on year.     Hong Kong, a southern Chinese special administrative region and free trade hub, has been trying to foster the development of RMB financial market recently with a pilot scheme using yuan for cross- border trade settlement and the issuing of yuan-denominatedbonds in Hong Kong by local and foreign banks operating in the mainland.

URUMQI, July 14 (Xinhua) -- Abdul'ahat Abdulrixit, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), said Tuesday that ethnic unity was the "basic benefit" for all the people in Xinjiang.     "Ethnic unity is the basic benefit for the 21 million people of various ethnic groups in Xinjiang... and these people have a long tradition of loving and supporting each other," Abdul'ahat Abdulrixit told Xinhua in an interview in Urumqi Tuesday.     Abdul'ahat Abdulrixit, an ethnic Uygur, was born in 1942 in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. He joined the Communist Party of China (CPC) in 1960 and was elected CPPCC National Committee vice chairman in 2008. JINAN, June 29 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has encouraged domestic enterprises to make breakthroughs in science and technology development to weather the global financial crisis.     Wen made the remarks during his inspection tour in east China's Shandong Province from Saturday to Sunday. It had been the Premier's fourth consecutive weekend inspection tour outside Beijing this month. Wen said the government would continue the current proactive fiscal policy and moderately ease monetary policy and take it a top task to keep a steady economic growth.     In JinJing Group, China's first glass-manufacturing company with a history of 105 years, Wen was pleased to see the company had gained steady sales increase with its independently-developed new products amid the global downturn. MILAN, Italy, May 19 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislator Wu Bangguo said here on Tuesday that China and Italy should explore new areas of cooperation as they face major opportunities in addressing the grim challenges of the international financial crisis.     Wu is the first chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) who has visited Italy since 1997.He arrived in Milan on Monday evening for an official goodwill visit. Wu met with Roberto Formiconi, president of Lombard Region of Italy on Tuesday.     During the meeting, Wu said as one of the most economically vigorous regions in Italy, the Lombard Region is leading the country in carrying out cooperation with China. It has signed a memorandum of cooperation with Shanghai on staging the World Expo.     Wu hopes that the two sides could utilize this platform to expand exchanges and cooperation so as to add new vigor to China-Italy relations.     Formiconi expressed the willingness to actively participate in the Shanghai World Expo, which he regards as an important area of cooperation between the two sides. He hopes to learn the experience of Shanghai in hosting the World Expo.
