With concerts, sporting events, and large gatherings on hold this summer, people are looking to the great outdoors for fun. Right now, national parks and other public lands are in the federal spotlight for another reason.“It's going to be a huge difference maker,” said Will Shafroth, CEO and President of the National Park Foundation. Shafroth is talking about the Great American Outdoors Act, a bill the Senate recently approved in a bipartisan 73-25 vote.“This is historic. I’ve been working on these issues since 1981, and I can tell you that in terms of the amount of money dedicated to any particular conservation purpose, this is the most significant bill to ever pass Congress,” Shafroth said.“At a time where there’s a lot of division about a lot of different things, this is something that Democrats and Republicans agree on,” he said.The bill would provide funding to maintenance backlogs across various federal lands. The National Park Service alone has almost billion in deferred repairs.“The wear and tear on these places is dramatic,” he said.“Seasonal housing really ranges from exceptional, to trailers that are falling apart in the middle of nowhere,” Shannon Dennison said. Dennison has worked at a number of national parks in the past.“The last time that the park service had a major infusion of funding into the agency and into the facilities was 1956,” she said.Also known as Mission 66, the decade long program was intended to expand visitor services. Dennison said that was the last major investment.“I think it's been a challenge to go 54 years without putting major investment into our facilities while we're seeing rising visitation,” she said.Visitation at parks has gone up over the years. In 2019, national parks saw nearly 328 million visits, up 9 million from 2018 and the third highest year on record.Even though these spaces were closed for a short time this year due to COVID-19, people are opting to turn to the outdoors since large gatherings are discouraged.“Being outdoors is one of the safest places to be, and it's also helping to contribute to people's mental health so the parks are seeing even more of an impact during the pandemic,” said Bonnie Clark, an Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Denver.The legislation would provide billions of dollars to help with renovations and repairs, coming from energy production.“Essentially what happens is that when these oils and gas leases are done on federal land, they are paying money to be able to access and use these resources because they belong to everybody,” Clark said.This was one of the key debates.Dennison hopes the act paves an easier path for these projects.“Sometimes it can be difficult to get an entire pot of money for one entire project,” she said. “My hope is there will be a little more flexibility in how those funds can be applied based on the park level.”The legislation will now go on to the House of Representatives for a vote. 2974

(AP) — More than 70 West Point cadets have been accused of cheating on a math exam taken online when they were studying remotely because of the coronavirus pandemic.A spokesman at the U.S. Military Academy says 55 cadets admitted cheating on the calculus exam in May. Most of them have been enrolled in a rehabilitation program and will be on probation for the rest of their time at West Point.The cheating came to light when instructors saw irregularities while grading the exam. One of the students was a sophomore, and the 72 others were freshmen in a class of 1,200 West Point cadets.According to the Associated Press, once an honors committee completed their investigation into the matter, two cases were dropped due to lack of evidence, four cases were dropped after cadets resigned, and three cadets admitted to cheating but aren't eligible for the rehab program.Several over cadets will face hearings with the administration to see if they will be penalized or expelled, the AP reported.According to the AP, the only other cheating scandal to occur at West Point happened in 1976 when 153 cadets were expelled or resigned for cheating on an electrical engineering exam.More than 90 of those caught cheating in 1976 were reinstated and allowed to graduate, the AP reported. 1305

"We are actively exploring opportunities, including potential partners, as we evaluate the next steps for our brand."Three states -- New Jersey, Delaware and Louisiana -- have legalized sports gambling since the Supreme Court decision in May. Before the ruling, Nevada was the only state where it was legal to bet on sports.Many other states are considering legislation that will allow for sports betting in the hopes of cashing in on what could be a multibillion-dollar industry."We're still waiting for state legislatures and regulators to hash out licensing rules, so it's unclear how they'll [Buffalo Wild Wings] have opportunity to participate," said John Decree, head of North America equity for Union Gaming, a boutique investment bank that focuses on the gaming industry.Current there are 43 states with some type of legal casino. But even states without casinos could move to allow sports gambling.Decree said that he thinks it's likely that Buffalo Wild Wings will partner with an established casino or other sports betting entity, rather than try to get licenses on its own as states move to allow sports wagering."It'll be hard for them to try to get licensed in every state that allows it. DeJoy, a major GOP donor, made a series of controversial policy changes in the summer that delayed mail nationwide, fueling worry about the service’s ability to handle the unprecedented crush of mail-in ballots.At the same time, President Donald Trump has baselessly attacked mail voting as fraudulent throughout his campaign.Much of Sullivan’s order hinged on postal data showing roughly 300,000 mail-in ballots in several states had not received scans showing they had been delivered. (AP) — Authorities say a retired firefighter who was upset with a mask ordinance in the city of Wichita, Kansas, has been arrested on suspicion of threatening to kidnap and kill the mayor.The Wichita Eagle reports that police say the 59-year-old suspect could face a charge of criminal threat.Democratic Mayor Brandon Whipple said someone had read him text messages received by another city official that asked about the mayor’s address and threatened his life.Whipple says the suspect talked about tyranny in the messages and was upset about the mask mandates and not being able to see his mother because of coronavirus restrictions.“He said he was going to kidnap me and slash my throat and he needed my address because I needed to see the hangman — me and everyone who, something about tyranny,” said Whipple.The Eagle reports that the mayor has been an online target of anti-mask activists after he pushed for a citywide mask requirement to help slow the spread of the coronavirus.Whipple says he will now have an increased security presence around his home to protect him and his family.The Wichita Police Department told The Eagle that it’s investigating the threats and that no other local officials are believed to have been targeted at this time.This incident comes after law enforcement arrested several men who authorities say plotted to kidnap Michigan Gov.
