SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Police and National City firefighters used “scare tactics” this Halloween with elaborate haunted stations, touted as safer alternatives to traditional trick-or-treating on dark streets.The Southeastern Division police station building on Skyline Drive was transformed into a walk-though “haunted station," with room after room of zombies, creepy clowns and ghouls, some played by department employees in costume.“It’s all in good fun, for the kids to save a safe place to go, to get a little scared but in a safe environment,” San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman said before she took a tour of the haunts.Joseph Lemon, Jr. does not let his 11-year-old daughter Ananda do traditional trick-or-treating.“It’s not as safe as it used to be, and you have to go and x-ray the candy and all of that," Lemon, Jr. said. "Now many of the churches and the police department put on events like this that are safer.”  They also had candy and entertainment in the parking lot. Zimmerman said about 500 families tour the haunted station each year.In National City, the training tower at Fire Station #34 on East 16th Street became “Tower of Terror” for the tenth year in a row.Hundreds of people lined up throughout the night to walk through the maze of haunted rooms and be scared by ghouls, played by students from Sweetwater High School and firefighters.They also had candy, a costume contest, a bounce house and less-scary games for the little ones.National City Police say just after 8:30 p.m. several juvenile males threw eggs at the event.No one was hit and there was no damage to any property. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police are opening new locations for San Diegans to conduct business safely. Each San Diego Police division will have a Designated Online Transaction Space (D.O.T.S.) where carrying out online or private sales and exchanges of goods. The space will be in view of the station’s front door and in a well-lit area. “Online platforms have become an epicenter for scam artists and predators looking to take advantage of innocent people. In a world filled with online transaction uncertainty, D.O.T.S. offers certainty. I am pleased to see my pilot program expand citywide. You truly cannot put a price tag on peace of mind,” stated Councilmember Chris Cate. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County businesses have until Saturday morning to make sure they are up to par with the state’s COVID-19 purple tier guidelines, but El Cajon’s mayor said businesses in his city won’t be punished for not abiding by the rules.Mayor Bill Wells said he’s fielding a flood of phone calls and emails from El Cajon businesses since the county moved into the purple tier earlier this week.“People are coming up to me saying, ‘We’re not going to close, if we close, we’re never going to reopen.’ And, ‘We don’t want to have issues with the county or state, but we need to feed our family, pay our mortgages,’ and I understand,” Wells said.Since the pandemic began, the El Cajon City Police Department has already been told to categorize COVID-19 related enforcement calls as a low priority. Wells said that approach will not change this weekend.“If somebody called and said there was a nail salon or hair cutting place open, we’re not going to go shut them down. We reserve the right to do some enforcement,” said Wells. “If you don’t like the fact that there’s a business open, don’t go in there. That’s fine, you don’t have to go in there. Don’t give into the temptation to control someone’s behavior and if you do, do it in a civil nice way.”Though he said he understands the concern about the increase in COVID-19 cases, Wells said he believes the attempt to control the spread of the coronavirus shouldn’t be handled like this.He said, “We’ve had a disease as long as people have been alive, and disease runs its course. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Gas and Electric has released a list and map of areas that may be affected by planned power outages amid Santa Ana winds. The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning from noon Thursday through 6 p.m. Friday for the inland valleys and mountains. East to northeast winds are expected to reach 20 to 30 miles per hour with gusts as high as 50 miles per hour and isolated gusts as high as 60 miles per hour. To make matters worse, humidity is expected to range between 5 and 10 percent with poor overnight recovery. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Police are asking for the public’s help identifying a suspect in several Mission Valley vehicle burglaries. According to police, three separate vehicles were burglarized in a parking garage on the 2200 block of Camino de la Reina on August 16 between 2 and 5 a.m. Surveillance video captured the suspect using a flashlight to look into several vehicles in the garage. The suspect then broke into the vehicles by shattering windows, taking miscellaneous items, police say. The suspect is described as a white male with a medium build last seen wearing dark colored, framed glasses, a black t-shirt with a white image on the front, blue jeans and black and white tennis shoes. He was also wearing a backpack, police say. Anyone with information is asked to call San Diego Police at 858-495-7957 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
