She came to the US more than two decades ago as a refugee. Tlaib actually campaigned with Omar ahead of the latter's primary race earlier this year.Omar also had the backing of Ocasio-Cortez in her primary race, and she will come to Congress having been an open critic of the Israeli government's treatment of Palestinians.Omar will take the seat vacated by Minnesota Rep. Keith Ellison, the first Muslim elected to Congress. Ellison is leaving Congress as he vies to become Minnesota attorney general.Tlaib will fill the seat formerly occupied by Michigan Democratic Rep. John Conyers, who left office last year amid accusations of sexual misconduct. She ran unopposed on the general election ballot following her primary win.Tlaib is the daughter of Palestinian immigrants and became the first Muslim female member of Michigan's state legislature a decade ago. A self-styled progressive, Tlaib is a vocal critic of President Donald Trump and was arrested two years ago for disrupting a Trump speech in Detroit.Only two other Muslims have been elected to Congress, and both are men currently in office: Ellison and Indiana Democratic Rep. A Philadelphia woman is hailing a Cleveland Clinic doctor a hero after he helped save her life while on an airplane. On Saturday, 28-year-old Ashley Spencer boarded an American Airlines flight in Philadelphia destined for Cleveland. But shortly after the plane took off Spencer passed out."I stopped breathing," she said. "I still had a pulse. That's when the stewardess said, 'Is there any medical professionals on the aircraft? It's an emergency.'" Spencer, who has a severe peanut allergy, was having an allergic reaction to a bag of chips she had eaten right before the flight. Her body was going into anaphylactic shock. That's when Dr. Erich Kiehl, an electrophysiology fellow from the Cleveland Clinic, and another doctor from North Carolina sprang into action. The men injected Spencer with an Epi-Pen four separate times and monitored her vitals over and over.To make matters even scarier, Spencer suffers from Eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA), a rare auto immune disease. Because of the disease, she said her heart isn't in the best shape. She's spent the last several years in and out of the hospital undergoing several rounds of chemotherapy."When a person is going into anaphylactic shock it has to be taken seriously," she said. "Having Dr. Kiehl on board was so important. He was monitoring the heart completely." The plane made an emergency landing in Pittsburgh and Spencer was rushed to the hospital. She spent Saturday night in the ICU recovering from the reaction. Spencer said she's gone into anaphylactic shock in the past and has received treatment at the hospital, but the help she received from the men in the air was above and beyond."I would have to say the treatment I got on an aircraft was probably better," Spencer said.What's ironic is that Spencer was on the plane to Cleveland because on Monday she's scheduled to meet with doctors at the Cleveland Clinic in her search for answers about her rare disease.Spencer said she is eternally grateful for both doctors who helped her on the plane. She's already purchased plaques for both men as a way to say thank you."I am beyond thankful," she said. "I could have died up there." Spencer said she hopes the Cleveland Clinic can help her meet up with Dr. Kiehl while she's in town.  2428

A metro Detroit mother says her 2-year-old’s severe medical disorder has been devastating. Even worse, she says Health Alliance Plan, which sells health insurance in several states, has refused to cover a crucial formula her daughter’s needs. For 2-year-old Abby Bortnick, the food you would find in the refrigerator is dangerous and could cause serious health complications. Her mother says it’s part of the reason she’s been in a battle with the health insurance company, for more than a year.The extremely rare digestive condition is treated differently in other states. Michelle Bortnick says more than 20 other states along with the FDA consider the formula needed by Abby to be medical food. However, she says HAP has labeled it a supplement they won’t cover. Without the formula, Abby’s body treats food as an allergen and rejects it. The trouble has existed for more than a year and the costs have been hundreds of dollars a month. “We have been battling with HAP for so long and without help, she will die,” says Michelle.HAP issued the following statement to WXYZ: 1097

A proposed act that would make it illegal in San Francisco to make a 911 call based on another person's race or ethnicity is one step closed to becoming law.The San Francisco Board of Supervisors unanimously passed the CAREN Act on its first read on Tuesday.Supervisor Shamann Walton proposed the Caution Against Racially Exploitative Non-Emergencies — or "CAREN" — Act in July. The name is a play on the online trend of labeling women caught making problematic or racist statements in viral videos as "Karens."The law would make it illegal to call 911 with the "specific intent to discriminate over someone's race, ethnicity, national origin, place of birth, sexual orientation, gender identity or religion," according to KPIX-TV in San Francisco.According to CNN, Tuesday's vote was passed unanimously by all city supervisors on the first read. The board will vote on the proposal again next week, and if passed, it will be sent to the desk of San Francisco Mayor London Breed, who could then sign it into law.A similar law is currently making its way through the California state legislature. AB 1550, which would outlaw discriminatory 911 calls throughout the whole state, has passed California State Assembly and is in committee in the state senate.Walton proposed the law in July after several viral videos sparked outrage about racially-based 911 calls across the country. In June, a man's recording of a white couple calling the police on him for chalking the words "Black Lives Matter" on his rented home went viral. The couple later issued an apology.
