CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - A man suspected of making a threat against a Chula Vista Catholic church and school was arrested Wednesday, Chula Vista Police said.Thomas Escajeda, 61, called St. Rose of Lima church and school at 293 H St. Tuesday. He threatened to harm parishioners attending a mass for All Saints Day on Thursday at 8 a.m., police said.A church representative called police, who arrested Escajada Wednesday on suspicion of Felony Criminal Threats. He is currently being held on 0,000 bail.Escajeda has been a regular participant of the church for a year, police said. Investigators said they did not know the motive for the threat.The All Saints Day mass is part of a solemn holy day for Catholic worshippers, dedicated to honor of the saints of the Church, according to Catholic.org.The mass and Thursday classes were canceled despite the arrest, police said. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Sweetwater Union High School District is trying to be proactive in the way it approaches teenage suicide.They'll hold an Open Forum to discuss the issue Thursday night, March 7, at Otay Ranch High School (1250 Olympic Parkway). The meeting starts at 6 pm."One life lost is one too many," says District Spokesperson Manny Rubio.According to the latest numbers from the San Diego County Suicide Prevention Council, suicides rose in 2017 after three years of holding steady. There were 458 deaths by suicide in 2017.The report also found that 14.5 percent of students had seriously considered suicide.Rubio says any time there is an incident with a Sweetwater student, they have crisis counselors and psychologists who go to campus. They also follow up with students in the ensuing months. But those are all reactive measures.To be more proactive, SUHSD officials asked students what issues they want to address concerning suicide. Among the responses were depression, social media pressure and bullying.The topics will be front and center of the public forum Thursday night."We want to make sure as we're going forward, that we're looking at what we can to better support our students," says Rubio. "This was one of the ideas. So let's talk about this in the open and let's talk about this publicly so that we can make sure that our students are feeling supported and feeling recognized."The event is open to the public. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Police are searching for the suspects accused of stabbing a 15-year-old to death as he tried to defend his friend at a Chula Vista birthday party in late January. According to police, the stabbing took place on January 31 on the 900 block of Maria Way in Chula Vista. Police say an argument broke out between two teenagers. The argument later turned physical and, as the 15-year-old -- identified by friends as Devin Griffiths -- tried to help a friend being attacked by several men, he was stabbed in the upper body, according to police. According to police, he “passed away with his family at his side.”Police say the suspect group is believed to consist of eight to 15 men and women between the ages of 17 and 20. CHULA VISTA, Calif (KGTV) -- More than 20 people showed up to a town hall meeting hosted by the Baldwin and Sons regarding their development in Otay Ranch.Right now, the massive project includes 292 condos, 300 apartments, a 2-acre park and 15,000 square feet of commercial and retail space, as well as two hotels.  One of the hotels opened in 2017, and condos are under construction.The developer now wants to add 300 more apartments to their plan.  They say the plan will not require any additional space but instead will require a different building and site design.RELATED: Developer wants to add 300 apartments to Chula Vista propertyMany in the community raised concerns about traffic and the overcrowding in schools at the open house. Developers were there to address those concerns.According to Nick Lee, a study of the area says the roads it can accommodate nearly 12,000 trips a day. Even with the additional 300 units, it would push those numbers to around 8,000 trips a day.They also said they’ve spoken with the Elementary and High School districts, and both have told them they should be able to accommodate the students with their existing facilities.The developers expect to bring the new plans to planning commission next month. 1268

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The Sweetwater Union High School District is tightening its belt on the budget. On the table is a plan to not replace dozens of positions and cut bus routes. Critics say the move could leave hundreds of students without a ride to school. The board meets Tuesday night to finalize the plan to save money. One of the biggest moves on the table is not replacing some 80 positions within the district. Positions on the chopping block include assistant superintendent positions and nine bus drivers. No one within the district will be at risk of losing their jobs. Instead, the positions won’t be replaced after employees retire. Roughly 300 employees already chose to take an early retirement. The district also plans to eliminate 30 bus routes next school year that will save half a million dollars per year. Four of the districts 13 high schools will be affected by the route cuts. Several parents say they were blindsided by the news. "Out here we have year round schooling, so schools going to be starting for us in July. That’s just a couple months to figure out for parents that are working how they're going to change their schedules and if they can't then these kids are left to fend for themselves,” said Sara McIntosh. The district says Sweetwater is one of a few districts that still offers bus service. Many districts cut it years ago when the state stopped requiring it.
