SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Defense Secretary James Mattis has signed the extension of troops at the border, a defense official confirmed to ABC News. The extension was requested by the Department of Homeland Security after hundreds of migrants rushed the San Ysidro Port of Entry in a show of force. The move means the troops will be extended through January 31. Two officials told ABC News it’s unclear how many of the 5,600 troops currently at the border will be extended. The source also said there will be a flow-in of new forces as other units flow out because their specialties are no longer needed. Engineering units were named as one of the specialties no longer needed at the southern border. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — High surf forced the west wall at La Jolla's Children's Pool and Ocean Beach Pier closed Saturday.A high surf advisory was issued for the county's coast from Saturday to Sunday at 4 p.m. Surf is expected to peak Saturday with waves up to 10 feet possible along the county's coastline. Sunday, surf conditions are expected to hold through the day.Beachgoers were warned of strong rip currents and possible beach erosion during the surf event. Lifeguards asked that anyone heading to San Diego's beach hold off on water activities and watch the bluffs until the high surf passes.Because of the surf, San Diego Fire-Rescue lifeguards closed the Ocean Beach Pier on Friday just before 10 a.m. and were expected to keep the pier closed through at least Saturday morning.In La Jolla, lifeguards said the west wall of the Children's Pool was closed to visitors, as waves crashed over the barrier. 916

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - For six years a Camp Pendleton Recon Marine allowed filmmakers full access into his life, which at one point hit rock bottom. The GI Film Festival documentary, Homemade, aims to start a conversation on taking better care of our returning veterans. Staff Sgt. Adam Sorensen was injured in 2010 by an explosive device in Afghanistan; 100 pieces of shrapnel pierced his body, and he required two surgeries.He could no longer serve in a combat role and spent the next couple of years as an instructor. The documentary follows Sorensen as he navigates civilian life and the effects of Post Traumatic Stress, Traumatic Brain Injury, and addiction on his marriage, family, and work.Filmmakers Danielle Bernstein and Jason Maris included scenes that can be hard to watch. "For me, it ultimately is to help people, because that's the whole reason I really wanted to make something that looked at how is this affecting people, families," said Maris. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Del Mar may be the county's smallest city, but it has no shortage of workers commuting in every day to serve its residents and tourists.They're coming from as far away as Oceanside, La mesa, and Rancho Penasquitos. It's because the city - with a median home price of .7 million - has no affordable housing. "If they could live here and walk to work we'd get all kinds of benefits from that," said Del Mar Mayor Dwight Worden. To help make that happen, Del Mar may start charging developers of condos and condo conversions fees by the square foot. That could add to more than a hundred thousand dollars per project for affordable housing. Right now developers of those projects pay a flat fee of ,500, which hasn't been updated since 2007.The city council is considering a per square foot charge for existing construction and per square foot for new construction.The money would either go to expanding Del Mar's rent subsidy program, which currently assists five families in the city.Worden, however, said he prefers physical units because they are there forever. Del Mar currently has no affordable housing units, but the state requires it to have about 70. Worden said two currently proposed developments would include units, but he also would like the city to use the extra money to apply for federal and state grants.He also floated the idea of Del Mar buying an apartment building, converting them to condos, selling a portion of them to recoup its investment, and keeping some for low-income workers. 1571
