SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Nearly half of San Diego County's 1.95 million voters have cast their ballots in the Nov. 3 election, the Registrar of Voters reported Thursday.More than 937,000 ballots had been received as of Thursday, according to the registrar's office.Mail-in ballots were sent to all registered voters in the county on Oct. 5, even those who had not requested one.Ballots received by the registrar's office this week should be processed in time for the first release of election night results to be posted shortly after 8 p.m. Tuesday.Voters can return their marked ballot in the pre-paid postage envelope to any U.S. Postal Service office or collection box. The Registrar of Voters office in Kearny Mesa is open for early voting from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays for those preferring to vote in person.Voters additionally have the option to drop off their ballot at one of 126 drop-off locations around the county -- including dozens of libraries, YMCAs, county offices and The Old Globe Theater in Balboa Park.Voters also can also cast their ballots at their assigned polling place, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., from Saturday through next Monday. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Eight people were selected to serve on the county's Independent Redistricting Commission, in a random drawing during today's San Diego County Board of Supervisors meeting.Commissioners will redraw boundaries for the county's five supervisorial districts by December 2021, based on new federal census numbers.Those chosen to serve are David Bame, Colleen Brown, Amy Caterina, Chris Chen, Sonia Diaz, Barbara Hansen, Arvid Larson and John Russ.Bame lives in District 1; Russ lives in District 2; Caterina is in District 3; Diaz, Hansen and Larson live in District 4; and Brown and Chen live in District 5.The redistricting process happens every 10 years. Andrew Potter, clerk of the Board of Supervisors, said the commission will have 14 members with the appropriate skills, and also reflect the county's political diversity.Using a raffle roll cage, Potter and two colleagues drew names from a pool of 59 qualified applicants. Nearly 300 people applied to serve on the volunteer commission.The commission will meet later this month, and choose six more members out of 51 qualified applicants. There must be a full commission seated by Dec. 31, according the county.The commission must hold at least seven public hearings, and at least one must take place in each supervisorial district. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Lyft opened a 35,000-square-foot "Driver Center" Tuesday in a former Toys "R" Us store in Bay Park to provide a one-stop location for its drivers to go for vehicle repairs, maintenance and other support services."We're proud to open one of Lyft's first Driver Centers in San Diego to further meet our drivers' needs directly," said Lyft Southern California General Manager Hao Meng. "We know that maintaining a vehicle can add up and our goal is to service drivers' vehicles in a timely and affordable way so they can get back on the road."The facility at 1240 W. Morena Blvd. will be staffed by 20 vehicle service specialists, driver support and onboarding staff.Mayor Kevin Faulconer, San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Jerry Sanders and other community leaders were on hand for an opening ceremony.The Driver Center is designed like a race car pit stop, according to the ride-hailing company, with technicians working in teams to quickly get repairs completed and drivers back on the road.Available vehicle services include oil changes, tire rotation, and replacement of tires, brake pads, wiper blades, spark plugs, filters and batteries, along with free diagnostic assessments. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A teenage suspect was behind bars today in connection with the 7-month-old slaying of another young man in a Southcrest- area neighborhood.Raheem Malik Meals, 18, was arrested Friday on suspicion of murdering 20-year-old Ismail Abouabid on Jan. 15, according to San Diego police.Patrol officers responding to a report of a possible traffic accident in the 4000 block of Boston Avenue shortly before noon that day found Abouabid mortally wounded behind the wheel of a parked vehicle, bleeding from the head, Lt. Matt Dobbs said.Abouabid, who had recently relocated to San Diego from Erie, Pennsylvania, was pronounced dead at the scene.Witnesses told investigators three male teenagers had been with the victim just prior to his death and walked off toward a nearby park just before he was found.Police initially reported that Abouabid had been shot to death but later backed off from those statements.``The mechanism for the (victim's) injury is not being released at this time,'' Dobbs said Tuesday.The lieutenant also declined to disclose a suspected motive for the alleged slaying or reveal what led investigators to identify Meals as a suspect in the case. 1186
