SAN DIEGO — The Barbusa Restaurant in the heart of Little Italy is filled with famous guests, so to speak.Celebrity cutouts of the likes of Tommy Lasorda and the late James Gandolfini take up seats at tables closed for social distancing.“It's something just cute, and it makes people just feel comfortable,” Co-owner Joey Busalacchi says.Busalacchi put them there to help make the reopening more festive. Of course, he’d rather have real people in those tables - but can't because of coronavirus restrictions.The restaurant’s normal capacity is about 160, but had to be reduced to 120.That all changed Saturday night - when the Little Italy Association arranged for India Street to be closed to vehicle traffic - allowing restaurants to expand into the street.The extra space meant restaurants, already on razor thin margins, could serve their normal customer load.Barbusa was filled, serving up to 160 patrons.“Covid's not going away for a while, so the more we could get people to eat outdoors the better,” said Marco Li Mandri, the Little Italy Association’s Chief Executive Administrator.Li Mandri says the event was a major success, with good social distancing practices.The association will do it again this Saturday - with even more restaurants open - and could expand it even more in the future.Additionally, the Gaslamp Quarter Association announced on-street dining on Fifth Avenue starting Thursday.The city is also currently weighing a request from the North Park Main Street Association for dining on a stretch of 30th Street near University. 1563

SALEM, Ore. – Authorities responding to a hostage situation in Oregon found three people dead from gunshot wounds in an Oregon home Monday.The Marion County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release that its deputies responded to the hostage situation at a home in Salem at about 12:30 p.m. local time.At the home, Oregon State Police says deputies were able to establish communications with the suspect, 34-year-old Jose Jesus Lopez-Tinoco, in an attempt to resolve the situation peacefully.But upon hearing gunshots inside the home, officers forced their way inside in a rescue attempt. During the rescue, police say one deputy fired an undetermined number of shots.Inside the home, police say deputies located the body of Lopez-Tinoco with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The officers also found a deceased 24-year-old, Diari Rocio -Bustos, and the body of an 11-year-old boy. Both suffered fatal gunshot wounds.A 13-year-old boy and a 43-year-old woman were also found alive in the home. The boy was unharmed, but the woman was seriously injured and was transported to a hospital.No law enforcement officers were injured and there’s no reason to believe there is any outstanding danger to the Salem community, officials say.The 2-year deputy who fired shots during the incident, Ricky Kittelson, has been placed on administrative leave, as is protocol.The investigation into the incident is being turned over to the Oregon State Police, concurrent with state policy regarding officer-involved shootings. 1534

San Diegans were reminded again this weekend that what was formerly known as Qualcomm Stadium is not the city's most glamorous place. The lights just turned off in the middle of San Diego State’s game winning drive against Stanford on Saturday. But the aging San Diego Stadium, as its currently known, appears to be primed for yet another new chapter - even as public officials debate how the site should be redeveloped.  San Diego County Credit Union, which already sponsors the Holiday bowl, is stepping up with 0,000 to place its name on the stadium until the end of next year.  But that's not all.  The credit union’s proposal to the City Council outlines plans to market the venue. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 21-year-old bitcoin dealer from Baja California was ordered held without bail Friday in connection with a 31-count indictment charging him with international money laundering and other financial crimes related to his digital-currency transactions.Jacob Burrell Campos, of Rosarito, was arrested Monday as he tried to enter the U.S. from Mexico through Otay Mesa Port of Entry.During a bond hearing Friday in federal court in San Diego, Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Ciaffa described Burrell as a prolific bitcoin dealer who sold about 0,000 worth of the cryptocurrency to hundreds of buyers throughout the United States.The defendant conducted 971 transactions with more than 900 customers, accepting cash in person, through his bank accounts and via MoneyGram, according to prosecutors.As a bitcoin "exchanger" whose activities constituted a money- transmitting business, Burrell was required to register with the U.S. Department of Treasury and comply with all anti-money-laundering requirements, including reporting suspicious cash transactions, Ciaffa told U.S. Magistrate Judge Karen Crawford.Burrell, however, accepted cash "with no questions asked" and, in return for a 5 percent fee, supplied hundreds of people with an easy way to evade money-laundering laws applicable to all financial institutions, even those dealing in bitcoin, the assistant U.S. attorney alleged.Burrell's activities "blew a giant hole" through the framework of U.S law by soliciting and introducing into the nation's banking system close to million in unregulated cash, Ciaffa said.Burrell, charged with 28 counts of money laundering, sent 28 wire transfers totaling over 0,000 from his bank accounts in the U.S. to a bank account in Taiwan in the name of Bitfinex, according to the indictment.The defendant resorted to buying bitcoin through Bitfinex, a Hong Kong cryptocurrency exchange, after his account was closed by a U.S.-based bitcoin exchange for circumventing its identification-verification processes.The defendant, who was born in San Diego, allegedly conspired with others to smuggle over million in U.S. currency into the U.S. from Mexico in amounts slightly less than ,000 in order to avoid currency-reporting requirements.In all, the indictment charges the defendant with operating an illegal money-transmitting business, international money laundering, failing to maintain an anti-money-laundering program and conspiracy to structure monetary transactions.In ordering Burrell held without bail, the judge found that he posed a substantial risk of flight due to his significant ties to Mexico, citizenship in three countries, access to large sums of cash, lack of steady employment in the U.S. and alleged disdain for American laws. 2774
