SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Neighbors are concerned after they say a registered sex offender moved into their Rancho Bernardo community, just feet away from an elementary school playground.Anthony James Morgan, 32, was convicted of possession of child pornography and lewd and lascivious acts with a child in Tennessee in 2013.Neighbors say they became concerned after Morgan moved into a townhouse in their neighborhood weeks ago. According to records on the Megan’s Law website, Morgan lives on the 17000 block of Caminito Baya, about 100 feet away from a playground at Westwood Elementary School.According to the Safe Task Force, which monitors local sex offenders, Morgan’s living situation is legal because of the California Supreme Court.In 2015, the court tossed out blanket restrictions on where sex offenders may live. The ruling came after sex offenders said the restrictions made finding housing impossible for them.  Authorities say while probation or parole agents can implement living restrictions, due to the fact that Morgan is no longer on parole or probation, he is now allowed to live wherever he wants.Neighbors say the rule doesn’t make sense. “I think the rules definitely need to be changed when it comes to sexual predators,” said Linda Vasquez.Vasquez added that she is relieved to hear that Morgan will be moving out of the area in April. “I’m very happy for that. We don’t need that in a neighborhood full of children.”The neighborhood is particularly sensitive to the sex offender issue. Neighbors say registered sex offender John Gardner was spotted at this mother's home - less than 500 feet from Westwood Elementary - in the years before he murdered two teens, including Chelsea King.Father Brett King helped lead a successful fight for tougher laws, including stricter punishments for sex offenders.  When he learned about Morgan's living situation, he told 10news: "As a society, we have lost our common sense ... SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Newly-released census numbers show residents are fleeing California in sizable numbers.Angie Romero of was outside a U-Haul trailer, packed with rented wine barrels she will be using as decor for her 50th birthday party.  She'll likely be renting another U-Haul in the not-so-distant future."The cost of living puts you in another mindset.  I'm getting older and start wondering about my future," said Romero.Romero, who works in sales, plans on packing up and leaving the state within the next two years.  One reason: the rent for her apartment near San Diego."I've lived there three years, and every year it's gone up either or ," said Romero.Romero is hardly alone. According to the latest census numbers, in the year-span ending July 2017, adding up all the people moving into and out of California translates into a net loss of 138,000 people. In San Diego County, there is also an apparent exodus with a net loss of nearly 16,000 people in the year ending in July 2017. In the previous year, there was a loss of 8,300 people.         1148

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Officials with the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar Air Show announced this year's air and ground military event has been canceled citing the coronavirus pandemic.The 66-year-old air acrobatics demonstration is one of the nation's largest military air shows drawing several hundred thousand spectators over the three-day weekend event.MCAS Miramar tweeted, "Due to the continuing spread and health concerns of #COVID19, @MCASMiramarCA must formally announce the cancellation of the 2020 Miramar Air Show. It is a disappointment to us as well as many across the world, but the safety of our Marines and fellow San Diegans must come first."This is the first time the event has been canceled since 2013 when the U.S. Department of Defense slashed budgets due to a government shutdown.This year's event was scheduled for September 25-27. Officials said they are aiming to bring back the event next year.“While we had initially hoped to host the show and help usher in a re-opened San Diego, there are still a great many risks posed with a mass gathering of this size and scale to do it in a way that ensures our guests absolute safety," said Col. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- New census data shows that less than a third of San Diegans have their mortgages paid off.Of the more than 228,000 houses located in the city, 60,402 housing units have no mortgage.The numbers were released following a five-year study by the Census Bureau. The study was conducted between 2012 and 2016.Of the cities and neighborhoods with more than 1,000 homes, Harbison Canyon took the top spot for most homes without a mortgage at 41 percent followed by Bostonia also at 41 percent and Coronado at 39 percent. As far as cities and neighborhoods with the least amount of homes without mortgages, San Diego County Estates takes first place at 13 percent followed by Poway at 20 percent and Rancho San Diego at 20 percent. For those trying to buy a home, the county does offer programs to help with down payments and closing costs. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Police are looking for a driver involved in a two-car crash that injured pedestrians Tuesday night.The crash happened at the corner of Sixth Avenue and Laurel Street near Balboa Park. One couple said they were headed to the Haunted Trail at Balboa Park and were waiting to cross the street when they saw two cars headed for them.“I just saw the headlights going towards me, and if I didn't dodge that car, I would have been pinned on that tree. When I fell on the floor I saw that car slam on that tree,” one of the pedestrians said.  Police say a white Toyota was headed south on Sixth Avenue and as it was crossing the intersection of Laurel Street, it was hit by a blue Honda that was making a left turn onto Sixth Avenue.  The driver of the Toyota stayed on scene, but police say the driver of the Honda took off.Officers did not have a very description of the driver, and it’s unclear if there were passengers in their car.  Police say three people were transported to the hospital. All had minor injuries. 1053
