SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Whether you're out for the night in the Gaslamp District or heading to a friend's for a NYE soiree, there's plenty of options to get around on Dec. 31 without getting behind the wheel yourself.San Diego MTS is beefing up service on Dec. 31, adding more trolley service through the night and partnering with Lyft to offer ride discounts. Service to accommodate riders to the Holiday Bowl Parade and game are also being offered.With the additional services, some modified schedules will be in place:New Year's Eve (Dec. 31): All trolley lines and most MTS bus routes will operate on normal weekday schedule.Holiday Bowl Parade: Extra Green Line Trolley service between Mission Valley and downtown will begin at 9 a.m. and will continue after the parade. Best access to the parade route are via Sycuan Green Line and UC San Diego Blue Line, MTS says.Holiday Bowl game: Service on Sycuan Green Line will run every 15 minutes throughout the day. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- A San Diego mother says working from home during the coronavirus pandemic cost her her job. She claims she was fired because her kids were making noises in the background of her teleconference calls."We're letting you go," Drisana Rios said. That was what her Human Resources representative told her in a call earlier this month. She said she thought the call was supposed to help resolve her workplace problems. Instead, by the end of the call, she says she was fired.Rios says it all began in mid-March when her bosses at an out-of-state insurance firm told her to work from home and telecommute via conference calls. This was in response to the state's COVID-19 lockdown orders.Rios says all parents working from home received an email from the company's regional boss that read, "thank you for the incredible effort you are putting forth through these difficult times." She says it also said that they would avoid layoffs during the pandemic.Like many parents, Rios was unable to find childcare for her four-year-old daughter and one-year-old son. Despite juggling parenting and working from home, Rios claims she was able to complete all her tasks. She adds that her clients never complained about her kids being in the background of her conference calls. The only complaints, she says, came from her male, direct superior."I said, 'Do you want me to lock my kids in the room? My one-year-old in the room? Do you want me to do that?' And… he responded and said, 'Figure it out.'" Rios said.She says she tried to arrange calls to be during her children's afternoon naptimes but claims her boss continued to ignore and demean her."He would purposely overlap schedules," Rios said.Rios then reached out to her HR department and asked how she should deal with the harassment she says she was experiencing-- a move she says that backfired a week later."She was shamed for having children, so she first elevated it to Human Resources," Daphne Delvaux, Sr. trial attorney at Gruenberg Law, said. "Human Resources took the side of the abusive manager, and terminated her for complaining."Rios has since filed a lawsuit against both her direct boss and the company for Gender discrimination, Retaliation, Gender harassment, Failure to prevent gender discrimination, Negligent supervision, Intentional infliction of emotional distress, and Wrongful termination in violation of public policy.In her complaint, Rios claims her HR representative told her that the company was "...experiencing a reduced revenue due to COVID-19 and they were laying [the] plaintiff off as a result of the pandemic." But Rios believes this was retaliation."The fact that they tried to cover it up because I went to HR, it's obvious what they did," Rios said.ABC 10News reached out to the company headquarters for comment on this lawsuit. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — With California hospitals dealing with an “extreme” number of patients, many are struggling to find enough staff to run nearly full intensive care units.The state is urgently searching for 3,000 temporary medical workers to meet the demand, with a focus on nurses trained in critical care.“Staffing is our number one challenge,” Governor Gavin Newsom said last week.The state has contracted with two travel nursing agencies to find reinforcements, including San Diego-based Aya Healthcare, the nation’s largest travel nursing company.“California has the most needs in the country right now,” said Aya vice president Sophia Morris. “It’s the number one state that we’re seeing need.”Aya is onboarding new travel nurses as quickly as possible, Morris said, but at the moment they can’t keep up with demand. Right now, about one-third of the requests for travel nurses are going unfilled, said California Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly.“We are adding hundreds and hundreds of new clinicians to start, particularly in California, every week,” Morris said. “So it’s coming. I think it just feels like it’s not coming fast enough.”Aya said it is on track to add about 780 more travel nurses in California by mid-January, on top of the 2,676 travel clinicians that are already on assignment in the state.But some experts say it’s a particularly challenging time to find spare nurses with so many regions across the country dealing with surges.On top of that, the number of registered nurses over 60 has dipped in California, according to researchers at UCSF, who found many older nurses stopped working out of concern for their health or the health of their family.California hospitals are confronting the shortage by trying to free up staff any way they can, including postponing certain medical procedures.The state has also temporarily loosened some restrictions. Typically, California requires one nurse for every two ICU patients. Regulators have temporarily relaxed that requirement to one nurse for every three ICU patients.California has also shortened the quarantine period for healthcare staff exposed in certain situations from 10 days to 7.The state has sent more than 600 temporary healthcare workers to hard-hit counties from the National Guard, the California Health Corps and other partnerships, but officials are still looking for more.State officials have even started reaching out to other countries like Australia and Taiwan to get much-needed medical workers. 2520

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- We know the importance of wearing a mask to protect the nose and mouth from the novel coronavirus, but some new research is raising questions about whether the general public should wear goggles, glasses or a shield to protect their eyes.The CDC already urges healthcare workers to wear eye protection. The agency updated its guidance in July, encouraging even healthcare workers in low-transmission environments to wear eye protection when it was previously listed as “optional.”Experts think the nose is still the main entry point for the virus because of the mechanics of breathing, but the surface of the eye is lined with the same mucous membrane to which the virus likes to bind.Animal studies have shown SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, can enter through the eyes and there have been viral particles detected in human tears, but there’s no clear-cut data so far showing the eyes are a major entry point, said ophthalmologist Dr. Annie Nguyen at the USC Roski Eye Institute.However, some observational studies have suggested protecting the eyes may lower the risk of infection.In June, a study in the Journal Lancet suggested face shields, goggles and glasses could lower the risk of infection from 16 percent to 6 percent.Another study published this month suggests that simply wearing eyeglasses could help.Researchers examined 276 hospitalized patients in Suizhou, China. Based on trends in that region, they expected about 31 percent of the patients would wear eyeglasses. Instead, just 5 percent of the hospitalized patients wore glasses.The researchers noted the observational study had limitations, but theorized that eyeglasses may offer a protective barrier against the virus.“I wouldn’t be quick to make the recommendation for everyone to run out and wear glasses,” Dr. Nguyen said.An editorial published alongside the eyeglasses study urged caution. “Although it is tempting to conclude from this study that everyone should wear eyeglasses, goggles, or a face shield in public to protect their eyes and themselves from COVID-19, from an epidemiological perspective, we must be careful to avoid inferring a causal relationship from a single observational study,” wrote Dr. Lisa Maragakis at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.Experts say more evidence is needed because urging people to wear eye protection could have harmful side effects, like causing the wearer to inadvertently touch their face more frequently.“If there is additional evidence that builds up, then that’s the point that we change guidelines,” said Dr. Christian Ramers of Family Health Centers of San Diego.“People have had whiplash from things changing and going back and forth,” he added, citing the change in guidelines on face coverings.Still, some experts say people with underlying conditions should consider adding eye protection, as long as they’re careful not to touch their face.Doctors have suggested that people who wear contact lenses might want to switch to eyeglasses to cut down on the number of times they touch their eyes, but Dr. Nguyen said there’s no hard data yet showing contact lens-wearers are at greater risk from the virus. 3184
