Player nameplates will spell out "Black Lives Matters" across the back standing in solidarity with the national-turned-global movement against racism and injustice towards people of color. The team's first game is Saturday in Utah. The organization's goal in aligning itself with the BLM movement is to promote inclusivity and diversity in the community, according to team President Warren Smith."Loyal is more than just our name -- it's our mantra," Smith said. "The Loyal in our name is symbolic of the diversity in our community, and now more than ever we stand by this. It's time to show our loyalty and stand together in the fight against racism and put an end to the violence fueled by hatred against our Black community."The team said it will auction off player-worn jerseys to fans with the profits going toward the Association of African American Educators of San Diego (AAAE), an "organization that advocates for equity in education within the ethnically diverse pupil population of San Diego County."“As a professional sport team, we have a duty to use our voices in a productive, meaningful way to benefit our communities,” said EVP of Soccer Operations and First Team Manager Landon Donovan. “We will not be silent about racial injustice and encourage our fans and community to join us in taking a stand.”The team said it will be giving 10 percent of jersey sales proceeds to the AAAE. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Republican Assemblyman Randy Voepel is being called a valor thief, but his accusers have not produced hard evidence to back up their claims. Navy veteran and Republican state assembly candidate Larry Wilske addressed the media on Monday in front of downtown's USS Midway. He and others say the former mayor of Santee, Voepel, misrepresented his military service record. "This is serious business. It's a slap in the face to veterans," says Wilske. Wilske was joined by private investigator and retired Master Chief Petty Officer Terence Hoey, who has been looking into Voepel's military records.  "He's not a purple heart recipient, although he's repeatedly stated that he is and his chief of staff has doubled down on his claim," says Hoey. They're also alleging that Voepel falsely claimed he had combat experience in Vietnam. However, military discharge documents sent to us by Voepel's staff show that he served on the USS Buchanan and was awarded a ribbon for combat action, and was awarded other honors related to his service in Vietnam. The Wilske supporters believe the discharge documents have been forged. “This document has been altered, thus rendering the form essentially void,” says Hoey. Voepel’s staff denies that Voepel ever claimed to have been awarded a purple heart and 10News couldn’t find proof of the claim, anywhere. Additionally, a military service record provided by Hoey does not include a purple heart award in his list of decorations. Wilske and his supporters say there are multiple credible witness testimonies and video evidence that’ll reveal the whole truth, but they have yet to be fully produced. Wilske and Hoey deny that their allegations of stolen valor are tied to political mudslinging. “The one thing we can't square here is that round peg with Voepel and his wild and comedic claims,” adds Hoey. There was one alleged witness at Monday’s press conference. He said he’s a veteran who met Voepel at a recent political event and claims Voepel lied to his face about his service history. Voepel’s staff is unsure as to whether the two have ever even met.  Voepel denied our request for an interview. He denies all allegations of stolen valor. 2273

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County has taken its first step into the dreaded "purple" tier of the state's four-tiered COVID-19 reopening plan, leaving just one week to determine if the county will be forced to shutter nearly all of its nonessential indoor businesses."It would take a significant change in trajectory," Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said Wednesday.State officials reported that San Diego County had an unadjusted new daily coronavirus case rate of 8.7 per 100,000. The adjusted case rate dropped to 7.4 per 100,000, above the baseline of 7, qualifying the state for the purple, or most restrictive tier of the reopening plan. Last week's unadjusted case rate was 7.8 per 100,000.In recent weeks, the region had an unadjusted rate well above the purple tier guidelines, but a significant effort to increase the volume of tests had allowed for an adjustment to bring it back to the red, or substantial, tier.According to the reopening plan, a county has to report data exceeding a more restrictive tier's guidelines for two consecutive weeks before being moved to that more restrictive tier. A county then has to be in that tier for a minimum of three weeks before it may move to a less restrictive tier.San Diego County has been in the red tier for months, skirting but ultimately avoiding the purple tier, which would necessitate the closure of almost all indoor operations of nonessential businesses. Recent trends have shown a slow but steady increase in infection numbers."People are tired of the pandemic and letting down their guard," Supervisor Greg Cox said. "We need to do better. We need to do a lot better and we can do better."If the county cannot drop its adjusted daily case rate below 7 per 100,000, indoor operations in locations such as restaurants, museums, places of worship, breweries and retail businesses will have to either close entirely, move to outdoor operations only or modify in other ways.Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer, said retail operations, including indoor shopping centers, will be limited to 25% of building capacity, down from the current 50%. Schools, unless they have already restarted in-person learning, will be restricted to distance learning. K-12 schools already in session can continue, Wooten said. The county's testing positivity rate actually improved, declining 0.3% from last week to reach 3.2%, but remains high enough for this metric to remain in the orange tier. The state's health equity metric, which looks at the testing positivity for areas with the least healthy conditions, increased from 5.1% to 5.3% and entered the red tier. This metric does not move counties backward to more restrictive tiers, but is required to advance. The state data reflect the previous week's case data to determine where counties stand. It is usually updated on Tuesdays, but this week's update was rescheduled because of the election.County public health officials reported 404 new COVID-19 cases and three new deaths Wednesday, raising the region's case total to 58,106 and the death toll to 904.Of the 15,345 tests reported Wednesday, 3% returned positive, maintaining the 14-day rolling average of positive tests at 3%.Of the total number of cases in the county, 3,983 -- or 6.9% -- have required hospitalization and 921 patients -- or 1.6% of all cases -- had to be admitted to an intensive care unit.Seven new community outbreaks were also confirmed Wednesday, two in business settings, three in restaurant/bar settings, one in a grocery setting and one in a health care setting. Over the previous seven days, 25 community outbreaks were confirmed. A community outbreak is defined as three or more COVID-19 cases in a setting and in people of different households over the past 14 days. 3771

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County’s public health officer said a Pacific Beach gym ordered to close last week has been linked to a community COVID-19 outbreak. The Gym, located at 2949 Garnett Ave., was ordered to close on July 23 for violating public health orders, according to a document from the county.County Public Health officer Wilma Wooten said the county discovered the outbreak on Tuesday. Wooten couldn’t offer any further details. A community outbreak is defined as three or more coronavirus cases linked to one location.RELATED:Gyms lawyer up to stay open amid pandemicGyms latest group of businesses to go outdoorsDefiant of county coronavirus order, Pacific Beach gym remains openThe county's order last week stated that "the owners/operators of the Gym have acknowledged that they are aware of the Public Health Orders but will not voluntarily comply."The document added, "despite efforts to educate and enforce State and local law at this property, the Gym's failure to safely operate is an imminent health and safety risk and an imminent health hazard."The county says The Gym can reopen once fitness activities have been moved outdoors in compliance with state and local guidance and the county health officer has approved the location to reopen.According to The Gym's Instagram account on Tuesday, the gym is preparing its property to offer an outdoor gym.The news comes as 282 more people tested positive for coronavirus Wednesday, bringing the total to 28,287. Five new deaths were also reported, bringing the total to 552 fatalities. 1566
