SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV) - A San Marcos woman is speaking out for the first time about her ,000,000 claim against San Diego County.She told 10News that two sheriff's deputies knocked on her door in the middle of the night last August for a welfare check.  There was no problem and they left but she said Deputy Richard Fischer returned alone an hour later, saying he needed to use her restroom; then told her she was cute and hugged her, several times."It wasn't an okay hug.  I was stunned, shocked.  It was very fast and confusing."She resisted. "Yeah, I felt very vulnerable, intimidated, felt weak. I felt little.  It's just a mess! Everything is a mess!   This is hard to do. He shouldn't have come back to my house and I don't ... everything's a mess!"Three months later, she said she's still frightened."Would I open the door anymore? No. I think he's bad for law enforcement and bad for me. I think he's a bad guy!"Dep. SAN ONOFRE (CNS) - A man drove a stolen van onto the grounds of the now- idled San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station and claimed to have explosives in the vehicle, drawing a response from the San Diego County sheriff's bomb squad, which determined that there was no danger, authorities said Wednesday.The driver, 27-year-old Erik Jon Norman, was arrested on suspicion of felony vehicle theft, San Diego County sheriff's Sgt. Pamela Wotkyns said.Sheriff's deputies went to the nuclear station a little after 4:20 p.m. Tuesday after security officers reported that Norman drove a white delivery van past the entrance gate and into a restricted parking lot, Wotkyns said. The security guards quickly detained Norman, but he told them the van contained electronic equipment and "possible explosives."The sheriff's department's bomb/arson unit was called to the scene but determined the van contained no explosives, only standard shipping parcels, Wotkyns said. Deputies later discovered the van was reported stolen earlier in the day from Oceanside and arrested Norman, taking him to the Vista Detention Center where he remained in custody Wednesday in lieu of ,000 bail. 1178

SEATTLE, Wash, -- Gwen Anderson says life for her and her daughter, Katja, was pretty tough even before COVID-19 hit.“I became disabled, I had a lot of medical issues. Once I became disabled, my doctor took me off of work, I lost my income,” said Anderson.She and Katja lived about 20 minutes south of Seattle and Katja was finishing up 8th grade.Then came the pandemic, an abrupt shutdown at school, and if that weren’t enough, financially, things went from bad to worse.“That was the hardest decision to make was to give up my apartment and to realize I couldn’t afford it any longer and to become homeless,” Anderson said.For Katja, it meant learning from home without a home. There was no consistency, and she says that was the hardest part.“Not being in contact with my teachers and having them help me, so I can ask questions,” said Katja.They moved into Mary’s Place, a homeless shelter that had to make adjustments during the pandemic as well.“COVID has created, basically, our entire service system and the work that we do and adjust every piece of it,”said James Flynn, the chief programming officer for Mary’s Place.He runs all the programs used by people that stay at the shelter. That includes assistance that helps students stay in school“Our youths services team are usually helping prepare folks for enrollment, getting ready for the school year, making sure everybody has what they need to feel prepared for the school year. Right now we’re really taking things day by day... making sure people have laptops, tablets, internet service. At the end of last school year here in our kids club areas we provided space for families who needed extra support to be able to have their kids come here and get some extra help,” said Flynn.There’s 2.5 million homeless kids in the U.S. today, many of whom, if they’re not able to stay in school, may not have access to the technology they need to stay connected.So far, Katja has been able to keep her school-issued laptop.“We still have our school laptops, we didn’t return them,” she said.Gwen worries about how being away from school and being homeless will affect her daughter beyond just academically.“She’s originally a shy person and that (school) helps her come out of her shell. So I would prefer for her to be in school and her to interact with her classmates and her teachers,” said Anderson.She says she will do what she has to get herself and Katja into a new home and keep Katja connected to her education. 2483

SANTA ANA (CNS) - A Colorado man was behind bars Wednesday on suspicion of killing an 11-year-old girl in Newport Beach in 1973, with authorities saying DNA technology helped them track down the suspect.James Alan Neal, 72, was arrested around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday in Colorado Springs, Colorado, in connection with the death of Linda Ann O'Keefe, who lived in Corona del Mar, Newport Beach police Chief Jon Lewis said.The girl disappeared while walking home from summer school on July 6, 1973, and her strangled body was recovered the following morning in a ditch in the Back Bay area. Police said the girl was last seen standing near a man in a blue or turquoise van.Lewis credited ``the latest in DNA technology'' for helping crack the case that has stymied investigators for more than four decades.``We have never forgotten Linda or the tragic events of July 1973,'' Lewis said at a news conference announcing the arrest. He said the girl's death changed the community, making parents think twice about letting their children outside alone.Neal has been charged with murder and District Attorney Todd Spitzer said the suspect could potentially face a death sentence, although there is some question about whether capital punishment could be applied in the case given the date of the killing and the laws that were on the books at the time.Newport Beach police last July mounted a Twitter campaign releasing information about the killing to try to spur new leads.The tweets detailing the last hours of Linda's life included photographs from the crime scene and a newly created ``snapshot'' of the suspect that was put together by scientists at Parabon NanoLabs. The tweets concluded with a video that included interviews with the detectives who have worked on finding the girl's killer through the years.Newport Beach police last year hired Parabon, a Virginia-based DNA technology company specializing in a process using genetic material, to build a sort of composite sketch of a suspect at 25 years old and how the killer might look today. 2048

Search and rescue operations are underway off the coast of Japan for a U.S. Marine Corps F/A-18 fighter jet and KC-130 refueling tanker involved in a mishap, according to ABC News. Five people were onboard the tanker while two were onboard the jet. One person has so far been rescued. Officials later announced on Twitter that the person rescued was being evaluated as the search for the six missing Marines continues. UPDATE:One of the personnel involved in the mishap is being evaluated by competent medical authorities at @MCASIwakuni.
