CHICAGO, Ill. – The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) celebrated its 110th anniversary this month. Just days later, they filed for bankruptcy protection. The move came as the organization was hit with dozens of child sexual abuse lawsuits dating back decades. “The boy scouts have had the problem of pedophiles targeting their troops since the very earliest days,” said attorney Chris Hurley with the Chicago based law firm Hurley McKenna & Mertz. The firm has represented more than a dozen former boy scouts who claim they were the victims of sexual abuse. “The Boy Scouts approach over all those many years was to keep it secret, to suppress the information, not share it with the community and not really addressed the problem,” said Hurley. The problem, however, has been known for decades. Court records revealed that since the 1920s, the BSA compiled “red” lists of adult volunteers identified as potential child molesters. They were known as the “ineligible files” or “perversion files.” One serial pedophile, who was twice convicted in Indiana before preying on hundreds of boy scouts in Illinois, was Thomas Hacker. He was convicted in 1989 and sentenced to 100 years in prison, where he died. Hurley settled 18 cases brought by Hacker’s victims. “I interviewed Thomas Hacker in prison and asked him why he chose the Boy Scouts. And what he told me was. ‘It was just so easy. They really didn't do anything to stop me.’” Two weeks ago, the Boy Scouts of America announced a five-year-partnership with an organization that provides services to male survivors of sexual abuse. The BSA isn’t talking but issued a statement in which president & CEO Roger Mosby wrote: “We sincerely apologize to anyone who was harmed in Scouting. In addition to implementing strong policies to prevent abuse, we are dedicated to supporting victims when and how they need it.” Sweeping new legal changes extending or eliminating the statute of limitations for victims to sue their abusers have been passed in more than a dozen states like California, New York and New Jersey. That’s led to more survivors coming forward and filing suit, but with last week’s bankruptcy filing by the BSA, everything’s been put on hold. In its filing, the organization estimates its assets at between billion and billion. “The bankruptcy is really an attempt by the Boy Scout organization to control the damages and control hopefully how much money they have to pay out and to get a cut off for any more claims,” said Hurley. A portion of those assets will likely go to compensate victims. But anyone who has not filed a claim by a looming deadline could be barred from future settlements. “The bill has come due. An 80-year-old Colorado woman received a surprise welcome home parade Monday after battling COVID-19 for months.Virginia Herrera was diagnosed in April and since then she's been hospitalized twice, spending time at a rehab facility."Every day I was trying to wake up and do everything they wanted me to do. It took a lot of effort, but I did it," Virginia Herrera said. The cancer survivor came down with bilateral pneumonia while battling COVID-19. Doctors had to put her in a medically induced coma for 20 days. She also had to undergo a tracheotomy after using a ventilator to help with her breathing."Oh my gosh, I've been going through ventilators, and a trec. A lot of medication and treatments," Virginia Herrera said. Before she was diagnosed with the virus, she worked as a Nutritional Manager for Fremont County Head Start for more than 50 years. A job that her family says brought her joy. Dozens of her coworkers filled a Fremont County Head Start bus to participate in the welcome home parade. Neighbors stood on the street corners in support."We feel it's a miracle that Virginia has lived through this, 97 days and 60 something days on a ventilator," said Rick Archuletta, a neighbor. "We were praying for her, hoping she would come through OK and Gloria, her daughter, has kept us up to date on Facebook."While she was in the hospital, her family was unable to visit her. They say God and the power of prayer got them through this difficult time."Our grandma is a woman of God and that is the main reason that got all of our family through this. Prayer and God, it was a true miracle," said Andrea Herrera, Virginia's granddaughter. "This is grandma's house, it's where we all come by to have Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. To us, it's our house as much as it is grandma's," said Dionisio Herrera, Virginia's grandson. "She always has the door open for us, always gives us a full belly to eat. We just love our grandma, all of us do."While she's happy to be surrounded by friends and family, she has a special message for those in the community. "Wear a mask and be careful," she said. Gehm and Sons is an Akron-based company with a cool past, hoping its very cold product will help provide a brighter future for Ohioans growing increasingly weary from the COVID-19 pandemic."We went from a horse-and-buggy shop in the early 1900s to a carbonic gas distribution company. In the mid-'40s, we went to dry ice," said co-owner, Harry Gehm.The company makes about six million pounds of dry ice each year, utilizing carbon dioxide and a block press to make 55-pound cubes. A pellet press slices the blocks into smaller chunks, which are then stored in boxes that can hold about 1,200 pounds of dry ice pellets.Demand for dry ice is hot after Pfizer announced its vaccine would need long-term storage at minus 94 degrees. Long-term storage for Moderna's vaccine would be minus four degrees. The temperature of the dry ice manufactured at Gehm and Sons is minus 109 degrees. The company has recently received about 15 calls from hospitals, stores like Giant Eagle, and the Ohio Department of Health ready to place large orders of dry ice in order to effectively store vaccine vials."When these hospitals get it (the vaccine), they're going to need dry ice within a matter of days, so they have to be set up way ahead of time so they are ready to receive a shipment," he said.Gehm expects the rush on dry ice will boost sales by 10 to 15%.The business was informed that ODH was preparing to order 15,000 pounds of dry ice per week."They're asking for between 25 to 50 pounds per container. I don't know how many vials are in each container, but that's what they're requesting," Gehm said.Gehm believes his company is the only Ohio manufacturer of dry ice, and for that reason, he feels the order calls will keep rolling in."I'm imagining it's going to last for a few months especially when they said these vaccines are a double dose, so that means it's going to take twice the time," he said.Rachel Feeley, a spokesperson for the Ohio Department of Health, expects the orders will begin around December 1, and the dry ice will be used for the Pfizer vaccine when repackaging and transporting to providers throughout Ohio.Feeley said ODH is waiting for information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to determine when the vaccine will be available for distribution.The weekly cost for the dry ice will be ,162 per week and will be funded with CARES funding, Feely explained.Gehm said he's glad his company with a rich history will play a role in protecting the critical vaccine for residents."It's just neat.
