DEL MAR (KGTV) — For the first time, researchers set up receivers along San Diego coast with the ability to record when sharks are near. California State University Long Beach spent Wednesday working with Del Mar lifeguards as they dropped three receivers along the coast and tried tagging sharks nearby. Unfortunately, no sharks were tagged.Chris Lowe, with Shark Lab, tells 10News, “we just got money from the state to expand it throughout all of California.” They have receivers from Avila to the Mexico border but none located between Oceanside and La Jolla."This is a big gap for us,” Lowe says.Each receiver collects data from any tagged shark within 500 yards of the device. The receiver logs the time, date and is able to identify the exact shark based on the scanned tag. For a decade, CSU Long Beach has been studying the patterns of sharks and working to collect enough data to eventually predict where sharks will be at certain times of the year. 967

DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) — While a hotly-debated gun show is returning to the Del Mar Fairground, its future remains clouded after a recently signed law. The Crossroads of the West gun show returned to the fairgrounds Saturday, two months after Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill banning the sale of guns and ammo at the venue. That law doesn't take effect until 2021, allowing the gun show to continue until then."It's been a mainstay for 30 years in San Diego and a small group of extremists tried to get it canceled and were successful for just a few months last year, but fortunately the courts stepped in and said, 'no you can't discriminate against a group based on what they described as their culture," Michael Schwartz, executive director of San Diego County Gun Owners, told reporters Saturday. Assembly Bill 893, introduced in February by State Assemblymember Todd Gloria (D-78), argues California shouldn't have a role in facilitating gun sales. Gov. "The state just shouldn't have a role in facilitating the flow of guns into neighborhoods where children are killed." Protesters are expected outside of the show Saturday to counter gun advocates."They are coming back to finish off our families by calling their gun shows ‘family friendly,’" Rose Ann Sharp, founder of NeverAgainCA, said. "It gives a perverse new meaning to 'women and children first.' Crossroads appealed the suspension and was granted the right to return in June 2019.The show's contract runs through 2020.Schwartz admits they don't know what will happen to the show after the next year, but they're hopeful the court system will rule in their favor once again."We believe there is going to be some kind of court decision and there is the possibility that it will be delayed and have to move its way up through the court system," Schwartz said. "But we're very confident that the court's going to see that this type of discrimination against this group of people — that they simply consider undesirable — is not right. "The fairgrounds is a state-owned, regional asset and just because one city decides they don't like a culture, that doesn't mean that they can kick them out of town ... DETROIT (AP) — Walmart is teaming up with the General Motors’ autonomous vehicle unit to test driverless delivery in Arizona. The companies say battery powered Chevrolet Volt vehicles will begin deliveries in Scottsdale early next year. At first they’ll have human backup drivers who will monitor the cars and help to deliver packages to doors. But Ray Wert, spokesman at GM’s Cruise autonomous vehicle unit, says they’ll eventually move to fully autonomous deliveries. Walmart says customers will be able to place an order and it will be delivered contact-free by a Cruise vehicle. The retail giant says it’s one of several autonomous vehicle pilot projects designed to chart a new roadmap for retail sales.Wert says the testing with Walmart will start small and gradually ramp up to more vehicles. He did not know how many Volts would be used at the beginning.The company says it started an express delivery service in April and now has it in over 2,800 stores that reach more than 65% of U.S. households. 1015

DENVER, Colorado — Authorities say one person is dead and four others have been wounded in a shooting in broad daylight in downtown Denver.It happened around 4 p.m. local time Monday near the busy intersection of 21st and Lawrence streets. A suspect or suspects remain at large. Police say the four wounded in the shooting were transported to Denver Health in stable condition. The fatal victim, whose identity has not been released, was pronounced at the scene.
