(KGTV)-- Hundreds of strangers came together Sunday morning to clean up the aftermath of Saturday night's La Mesa riots.There is a sense of love and support Sunday morning in downtown La Mesa. Strangers worked collaboratively to reverse the effects of what transpired Saturday. What began as a peaceful demonstration quickly turned into a violent protest. By early afternoon, people were blocking Interstate 8 and taking out their frustrations on SWAT Bearcat vehicles.The pandemonium continued into the night. Police deployed tear gas, protesters set cars and local shops on fire. Looters took advantage of the chaos."[It was] just a crazy scene," La Mesa property owner Tony Gaipa said. He said he was one of the lucky ones. "If you're in front of your building, they kind of left you alone, but the building next door didn't have anybody, and they would just pop the glass," Gaipa said. 10News met John Douglas as he was cleaning up in front of his wife's workplace-- an engineering firm that is now burned to the ground. "I saw signs last night like 'Racism Sucks' and 'Black Lives Matter.' Well, what about the black lives that got affected by this?"As an African American man, he understands people wanting justice, after seeing so much of the opposite. But he says what happened Saturday is not the answer."We can't do stuff like this. This is not helping. It's just wrong," Douglas said. He and hundreds of others spent hours sweeping the asphalt, painting over the graffiti, and drilling over broken walls to repair their beloved downtown. "I've heard nothing but positive things from everyone today," Douglas said. "Couple of bad comments from people driving by, but that's one bad seed. If that doesn't spread, there is no cancer. LEXINGTON, Kent. - Coronavirus has claimed more than 226,000 American lives, and it's been very harsh on members of older age groups. But here in Lexington, it was no match for Charles and Nellie Anness.Married since 1949, after meeting at a baseball game a year earlier in Harrodsburg, Charles (89) and Nellie (88) fought off the virus, like a batter fighting off a 3-2 pitch. "We feel pretty good, now that we get to go home," Nellie said from the entrance to Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital.Charles and Nellie believe they caught the virus while attending a church service in Gatlinburg, Tennessee more than one month ago. For ten days, the couple had to be separated at Baptist Health Hospital during treatment. While fighting back the tears, Nellie explained how that was the most challenging part of the entire ordeal given they'd barely spent one day apart over the last 71 years."We don't even like to talk about that. It was awful," Nellie said.After the hospital stay, a 16-day stint at Cardinal Hill followed, where they'd undergo a rehab program to improve their strength and ability to live on their own."I think they did great," said Emily Goggin, a therapist at Cardinal Hill, who worked extensively with the couple.The virus, as it's done to so many, attacked Charles and Nellie aggressively, but it spared them the thing they most needed in order to recover."I think love inspires us to be motivated to wake up and get out of bed each day," Goggin added.It inspired this couple to reach this day, the day they could finally go home together. We have something special," Nellie said. "I love him just as much as I ever have. Maybe more. (KGTV) -- "As young as I can remember my mom always helped out less fortunate people in the community, I remember delivering boxes of frozen hamburgers and roasts and things like that." Giving back are two simple words but for Linda Anderson, those words bring her back to childhood, and the memory of her late mother."We had a neighbor that was elderly and my mom would cook them meals and bring them over there, and she always had some little old lady in town that she would bring to their doctor's appointments. She'd bring them food, take them grocery shopping and clean their house," Linda recalled.But as Linda's mother got older, she was no longer on the giving, but on the receiving end. She received food and other essentials from Meals on Wheels, a nationwide organization that helped seniors living along, who are trying to do things on their own."They really made a big difference between her able to live at home independently, than being placed in a care facility," said Erica Peterson, Linda's friend.When Linda's mother passed, they wanted to honor her in a way that would make her smile, even from above. They created over a thousand gift bags with toiletries, office supplies and other goodies thanks to donations that were made in her honor."I think it'd mean a lot to her, I think it'd make her feel very loved and appreciated," said Linda. She added they were helping an organization that helped others, just like her mother did."They really need a lot of help especially during pandemic. They've had a lot of issues and they haven't seen a lot of donations they regularly have. I hope it puts a smile on their face. I know when my mom got a visitor and got a gift it always put a smile on her face. I think that's what we're trying to do, pay it forward and put a little bright spot in someones life." 1849

LANCASTER, Calif. (KGTV) -- A man whose body was found in a stone pillar in Lancaster Saturday could be the remains of a man who ran from police earlier in the week, according to KTLA. The body was found inside a stone pillar outside the WinCo Foods grocery store on the 700 block of West Avenue K around 2:40 p.m. Saturday.Earlier that morning, a manager at the store reported a foul smell coming from the pillar. The manager called a plumber thinking there was a sewage problem.When the plumber arrived and began knocking away the pillar’s stone, a leg and tennis shoes were visible. After arriving on scene, police were able to link the body to an incident earlier in the week.On Monday, a man was pulled over after being suspected of driving a stolen vehicle, police told KTLA. The man ran from police onto the rooftop of the grocery store which, according to authorities, has access to the inside of the pillars.Police say it’s possible that the man fell or climbed into one of the pillars to escape from authorities. With a recent heat wave and the density of the pillars, police say it’s possible the man became trapped and unable to breathe. 1167
