Isolation and loneliness are symptoms of the pandemic that could only worsen by the winter months.Experts are worried about the winter and "SILOS," which stands for single individuals left out of social circles.“Actually, what I saw was that family circles tightened very quickly. They're all talking about the book that they're reading, which is different. And so, people are being very creative about what they are doing,” said Hartman.“What we do here. And now for each other or what we refuse to do or are too afraid to do, that becomes part of our legacy, it becomes who we are as human beings,” said de Mik.Even foreign governments have encouraged people to form support bubbles.Both women agree community support and helping each other are keys to surviving the mental impact of the pandemic. 1843

In May of 1963, students from across Birmingham, Alabama marched in the streets as part of what is known as the Birmingham Movement.At the time, slavery was long abolished, but black people, particularly in the South, continued to endure discrimination. I’ve got the whips and the bruises to show.”Scruggs Jr. says the passion he still feels is the same passion for racial justice he did when he was a teenager, but he has found his hope wavering at times because of the lack of progress he has seen.“They’re fighting for the same thing that we fought for in 1963,” he said. "We got complacent. We believed that change has come; however, it hasn’t.”Scruggs Jr. says it happens in the job market when a prospective employee who is black is not afforded the same opportunities as his or her white counterpart. He says it happens at the public store when a handshake is not reciprocated. He says it also happens in schools when a black student is viewed more critically or graded more harshly by a teacher. He says they are palpable inequalities that are both subconscious and otherwise, and it is why he says these protests need to happen, but properly.“I saw where the market house here in Fayetteville [North Carolina] was set on fire,” said Scruggs Jr. “When it gets to the place, where it turns to anarchy or looting, then we have chosen the wrong path.”For Scruggs Jr., the path he helped forge in 1963 lead to the passing of The Civil Rights Act of 1964, the most sweeping civil rights legislation in nearly 100 years at the time, as it prohibited discrimination in public places, provided free integration of schools and other public facilities and made employment discrimination illegal.“It lets me know that the lick up on the side of my head wasn’t as bad as I thought it was,” said Scruggs Jr.It also laid the blueprint for the current movement that he says is still seeking a better future for his grandchildren's generation.“When you get an education, or you learn something, no one can take that from you,” said Scruggs Jr. "And if what you experienced will help someone else then that in itself is a success.” 3092

It’s harvest time for the wine industry on California’s Central Coast.At Wolff Vineyards in Edna Valley, owner Jean-Pierre Wolff is dealing with all kinds of issues.“Today in my vineyard, it’s over 100 degrees,” he said. “The impacts of the fires and the smoke taint really add another level of challenge.”These environmental challenges are now costing Wolff financially. It’s all hands on deck during harvest time at Infinite Harvest.This indoor, hydroponic farm in Colorado specializes in microgreens, young vegetables grown in a controlled environment and cropped shortly after they’ve sprouted.Production manager Luke Blough says microgreen sales have quadrupled in the past nine months with more consumers becoming more health, sustainability and environmentally conscious.“We kind of check all three of those boxes,” he said. “Our microgreen products are very nutrient dense; very flavorful. They’re sustainably grown locally and we have less environmental impact.”There's less environmental impact because of the way they’re grown. Stacking shelves of microgreens and growing them under LED lights means using about 95% less land than traditional farming.This method is catching on nationally.“Consumers are becoming more interested in microgreens,” said Sarah A. Johnson, Ph.D., with the food science and human nutrition department at Colorado State University. “They’re a relatively new agricultural food crop.”.In addition to the nutritional and environmental benefits, Johnson’s team found that microgreens could have major impacts in urban areas by making fresh produce more easily available to areas considered food deserts.“I think they have a lot of potential to kind of pop up all over the place,” she said. “Not just with these large companies but with smaller sort of pop-up, start-up companies as well.”As more farmers look to avoid unpredictable weather and leave less of a carbon footprint, experts predict microgreen consumption will continue growing nationwide“There are a couple of things we can do in a controlled environment that you can’t really do when you’re at the mercy of Mother Nature,” Blough said. 1768
