A White House official has spent about three months in the hospital recovering from severe complications following a COVID-19 diagnosis, including the amputation of his right foot and lower leg, according to multiple sources.Crede Bailey is the director of the White House security office and contracted COVID-19 in September. He was reportedly hospitalized shortly before the September 26 event at the White House officially nominating Justice Amy Coney Barrett, according to The Hill.A friend told Bloomberg Bailey’s family asked the White House not to publicize his condition, and President Donald Trump has not acknowledged Bailey’s illness.Bailey’s friends have set up a GoFundMe account to help pay for the White House official’s and his family’s “medical and healing expenses necessary as a result of Crede's COVID-19 illness and the life-altering results.”In an update posted on December 7, the fundraiser’s organizer, Dawn McCrobie posted a big update on Bailey’s condition.“Crede has recently been released from the ICU and is now at a full-time rehabilitation center where he is focused on gaining strength and learning to live a new normal. Crede beat COVID-19 but it came at a significant cost: his big toe on his left foot as well as his right foot and lower leg had to be amputated,” the update reads.McCrobie said Bailey will be fitted for a prosthetic leg in the next few months. The fundraiser has gotten more than the ,000 in donations they were originally seeking. In her updates, McCrobie says the money will be used not only for medical bills, but also to help renovate Bailey’s home to be more accessible for a wheelchair.Bailey oversaw the security office, which handles credentialing for access to the White House and works with the Secret Service on security measures. 1804

After briefly becoming a Category 2 storm on Monday, Hurricane Sally weakened back to a Category 1 storm overnight as it threatens to swamp Mississippi, Alabama, and the Florida panhandle. In its 8 p.m. CT update, the National Hurricane Center said Tuesday that Sally currently has maximum sustained winds of 85 mph and is currently moving toward the Mississippi and Alabama shores at 2 mph.The NHC said the hurricane is about 70 miles south of Mobile, Alabama, and 70 miles southwest of Pensacola, Florida. At 9 p.m. CT, a sustained wind of 58 mph with a gust of 73 mph was reported at Petit Bois Island, Mississippi, the NHC said. The overnight weakening is a welcome sign to forecasters. On Monday evening, NHC forecasted that Sally could produce winds of up to 110 mph before it made landfall.NHC warned that even though the storm slowed down, it will still produce a "life-threatening" storm surge in the central Gulf Coast region of the U.S. The NHC says "historic" flash flooding is possible as it makes landfall. The agency expects the Alabama coast to see the most flooding, including Mobile Bay.Hurricane conditions are expected as early as Tuesday, and the storm is currently projected to make landfall by Wednesday morning. 1239

About 40 percent of babies born in the United States were born to mothers who were not married, in 2015 according to the United Nations. The statistic comes from the UN Population Fund's annual report, which notes that the rate has steadily increased since 1970, when only 10 percent of children were not born to married parents. The trend is consistent with many Western countries — 60 percent of children were born to unmarried parents in the European Union in 2015, an increase from just under 20 percent in1970.The UN notes that while mothers may not waiting for marriage to have children, it's likely that the children are still growing up with two parents. The study notes that in 2010, 1 in 10 European children lived with a single mother, while 1 in 4 in children lived with an unmarried couple. The study also notes that mothers in the United States are waiting longer to have children. According to the UN, the average age of a woman when she gives birth to her first child has risen from about 22 years old in 1970 to about 26 years old in 2014.The study suggests that educated women in developed countries are entering the workforce, but may choose to wait to start a family due to the lack of affordable health care, lack of parental leave or flexible schedules.Read the entire UN study in the window below.Alex Hider is a writer for the E.W. Activated charcoal is the craze in the beauty industry to help get those pearly whites, but at what cost is it taking on oral health? What is activated charcoal? It's not the charcoal used in your backyard barbeque. According to Dr. Todd Shatkin of Aesthetic Associates Centre in Amherst, New York, it's a slightly abrasive powder usually formed by coconut and is used in many different aspects of the health industry. Activated charcoal is an absorptive property, and it's designed to absorb and lift blemishes from teeth. It's used for cleansing, weight loss treatments, and skin care products. Now it's being used for teeth whitening to remove stains. How does it work?A toothbrush is dipped into the powder and is brushed directly onto teeth. The activated charcoal powder removes the extrinsic stains; stains that are caused by wine, coffee and other foods and drink. "Charcoal-based products would be good to remove the surface stain, but it won't internally bleach or whiten the teeth from within," Shatkin said. Is activated charcoal safe to use?Shatkin says yes.He says, to first make sure the product is FDA approved, and check the abrasiveness level. "The enamel is really pretty strong," he said. "If you're in the enamel your probably not going to do any harm to your teeth. But if the patient has worn through the enamel into the dentin, it causes sensitivity and causes discomfort. If you use abrasive materials on the dentin, it will just make things worse."He says, in the end, it all comes down to good oral hygiene and visiting your dentist every three to six months. 1716
